Welo opal necklace

That sounds great LD. Can you share the name of the vendor?

Your design sounds beautiful. I saw someone use black onyx beads in between the rondelles online, and it really made the opal pop.

LD have you received them yet? If so, how do they compare in hand to the photos?

Just a note on the welo necklace. Do not be alarmed if you 'glow' on it and it changes color. Most of the opal is hydrophane (loves water) and will change color when it absorbs it. Don't wear it with a dirty neck or with makeup under it and sweat on it... err 'glow' on it, you might stain it if it is hydrophane (the water will transport it in if it is fine enough particles). I have not heard of it happening, but a cautionary tale. Oh, and you do start glowing, you will discover another property of the opal. It will stick to you. Natural action. Wet a finger and touch a dry welo. It is almost as fun as touching a sensitive plant (mimosa pudica).

Oh, I base my caution on the makeup because Sharpe will penetrate into the stone as will wax suspended in acetone. Seen both in person.

Really good to know, George. Totally makes sense, but I just wouldn't have thought of it.

Oh George I own sticky stones! I've just tried it with a wet finger and you're right, it stuck to me and felt all weird sort of like it was melting! Although there wasn't a colour change.

Minou - it's probably not as colourful as the vendor's photo unless I put it on a dark background and in certain lights. Some of the stones don't have such great play of colour but overall there's lots of red flash and the stones are not particularly milky (I wanted a larger proportion of clear stones). It's flashy and looks good when it's moving. The gems ARE small but I was expecting that because as you know I make my own jewellery so thankfully it wasn't a shock! It's really difficult to photograph but these were taken with my iPhone and I've put them on a skin/neutral background so you can see it at it's worst!

For £40 I don't believe this is a bad buy!

No, for that price, that is awesome. I have seen other examples running at $700USD (which was way over priced for that material as far as I was concerned.) I like. But I wouldn't be wearing it as it is too 'girly' for me ;) I love opal and am now cutting it :D

Thanks George. I love opal too. I know this strand isn't the best but as you say I couldn't walk away at that price! If these had bigger holes you could butch them up and put them on a leather or suede cord and wear as a bracelet.

This thread has really got me wanting a similar necklace, these are so pretty! Nice finds.

LD,
That's an excellent price for your necklace.

Jason has relisted the necklace I bought on Facebook. While I didn't like the look of the small rondelle beads, the beads are very homogeneous in color and all have flash. Most necklaces online are not well matched, and many stones within one necklace do not have good flash. At one point, I considered buying 2 necklaces and taking out the best stones to make one. You won't have to do this with the necklace I returned.
