What are your bad jewelry habits?

... I did buy a 925 silver eternity ring to see if I liked the look and woke up the next morning to this!
Yep, it had nickel in it, not 925 silver. I should have sniffed it first!

AFAIK, 925 does not indicate what other metals are in the piece besides silver.
The 925 stamp means the ring is made from an alloy that is 92.5% silver.
The other 7.25% will be a metal, or metals, that are not silver, maybe some nickel, maybe not.

So it would be correct to stamp 925 on a piece that is 92.5% silver and even as much as 7.25% nickel.

If wrong I welcome being corrected. :))

Impulse purchases—in the second hand market—bc I pay close to gold weight! I reason that I’m just wearing my investment, lol. And then the cycle of purging begins and I list that “great deal that I just had to have a few years ago”!on eBay. And usually I do break even, sometimes I make a few bucks more. I’ve lost count of how many rings I have but I started an auditing system earlier this year. I’ve listed as many of my purchases and sales as I can accurately recall since I started this vicious cycle. I even created an “Heirloom” category. The rest I categorized as casual jewelry and thus, the time will come when I will sell them. Funny how great my memory is when I look at my collection. I know exactly when and where and what I paid for any given piece. I find it very fascinating and can attribute this ability to the rush that I get when I buy jewelry. Don’t ask me if I can remember anything about my clothing purchases, lol.

My other bad habit is that I have managed to turn my DD into a jewelry fan! Yellow gold is her weakness when it comes to her purchases, but she happily shops in my vault for free, lol.

I love love love yellow gold!! That is my weakness as well, always has been

Typically the 7.5% is copper. Sterling silver (i.e. 925) doesn't usually contain nickel.

FWIW the very first web search return I clicked on had this paragraph:

"Because pure silver is much too soft to be used in jewelry, it is often combined with other metals to create a more durable metal. When 92.5% of pure silver is mixed with 7.5% of other metals (often copper, nickel or zinc) the resulting alloy is called sterling silver."

Since 925 sometimes has nickel, having a skin reaction to a ring stamped 925 does not mean the ring is not 925.

I can wear 925 Silver just so long as it IS actually 925 silver.
Most costume jewelry is a base metal with a nickel coating to give it a silver color. The ring was not as per its hallmark.

With all due respect, an alloy of 92.5% sliver and 7.5% nickel IS 925.
The number 925 only indicates the sliver content, not which other metal(s) the silver is alloyed with.

In jewelry copper may be the most common metal silver is alloyed with, but it's not the only one.
Nickel and zinc are also alloyed with silver, and they are all three called, and stamped, 925.

This is not personal, and I'm sorry you skin reacts with nickel.
They should have three stamps:
925C for copper
925Z for zinc
925N for nickel
But they don't. :blackeye:
All sliver alloys containing 92.5% sliver get stamped 925.

IMO Pricescope, being a jewelry information site, has a responsibility to have incorrect jewelry info pointed out and corrected.
Letting misinformation stand unchallenged does not serve PS or its readers.
As we have learned, fake new spreads.

I sure many here see me as "the bad guy", by putting correct jewelry info above your feelings.
Oh well. So be it.

:))

Below is a SNIP from this source : https://moonmagic.com/blogs/news/925-sterling-silver

"the stamp 925 is used to identify genuine sterling silver jewelry, which contains 92.5% silver.
Sterling silver is an alloy, or combination of metal types. Unlike pure silver, which contains 99.9% elemental silver (Ag), sterling silver (925) contains one or more additional metals that add strength to the otherwise delicate material. Pure silver is naturally very soft, and would easily bend or break if used for jewelry without being blended with a stronger metal.

Functional silver jewelry is often made with 92.5% silver. The remaining 7.5% of metal in 925 sterling silver is most commonly copper, however, some silversmiths opt to add durability with alloys of zinc or nickel instead. Sterling silver fortified with copper is preferred by many jewelry collectors, especially those with sensitive skin. ... "

Oh and, granted, the ring that turned your finger green could have been costume jewelry (containing no sliver) that was incorrectly stamped 925.

But IMO was more likely real sterling silver of 92.5% silver which happened to have 7.5% nickel ... but stamped properly with 925.

I don't take my jewelry off. I take them to the shower and bed. The only time I take them off is when I switch them or clean them. This is very bad and has caused some damage to an oiled emerald so I recently started taking emerald pieces off before shower and bed.

The past few years with hand sanitizers and alcohol sprays have really annoyed me because I know they damage my rings! But I always forget to take them off so now I just wear either plain bands or wear stones that are less fragile. It's still very bad though.

I get on too many tangents. Start looking at one thing then get an idea and start looking for that and so on. It gets to the point that I actually forget what I started looking for.

Also guilty of “just looking” we all know where that leads! If you don’t know what’s out there, you’re not tempted. Same with significant others I guess ;)2

I sometimes take naps with my rings on but when I got to sleep for the night, I do take them off. Shouldn’t sleep with them at all but there you go.

Your first habit is exactly how I ended up with a three-stone ring six years ago instead of the Toi et Moi that was just delivered yesterday. Why did I stray away from what I originally wanted? o_OI have no clue. :lol-2:

I tweak my own jewelry. I have altered almost everything I own in some tiny way.
I have accumulated a large amount of vintage/used jewelry from yard sales, estate sales, pawn shops etc.

Sometimes things just need a good polish, maybe some filing, maybe the prongs need adjusting. Sometimes the stones need straightening. I have pliers and know how to use them!

I guess I'm just not happy until I mess with something just a little bit!

You are brave! But, you know what? You see that jewelry every day and you know what it needs better than some!

I'm poor, and I spend a bit of my free time with you lot.
I can't help it, I just like ya. You all make me laugh and you lovingly feed my addiction vicariously with much care and attention.
I look at amazing jewelry and stones more than I should admit to.
And I dream and scheme for my next piece and lie to my little spinel box about how they'll be set. Soon. Shhhh, yes yes, soon. Knowing full well I'm soft BS-ing them something fierce because I wear a wedding stack. And that's it.

You are a joy.

I will tell you mine and it’s one that I repeat over and over again. Please tell me I’m not alone in this! If I’m on the hunt for something, I often end up with something that is 90% or even 95% of what I want instead of holding out for it to be 100% it. I just have no patience! For example, I wanted a 3 stone gypsy ring that had a decent weight to it, was in a specific price point, that was in yellow gold, and the stones were differently shaped. In other words not all three round. After looking for what seemed like forever, I ended up with an almost perfect ring, except that it’s rose gold. I actually really love it but I sometimes still look online to see if I can find that yellow one. Once I was looking for a particular type of band and ended up buying two bands because they were so close but not 100% what I was looking for. Often I do end up buying multiple things which defeats the purpose of the budget consciousness, which limits me ha ha ha. Please share your bad jewelry habits with me!

My bad habit used to be the International Gem & Jewelry Show (InterGem). I’d buy things and wear them a couple of times, only for them to be relegated to the “Don’t Wear” list because I had whim-walked every aisle of that show knowing nothing fit my taste.

I love the term whim walk!

Bumping this to say I found a yellow gold gypsy! And yes I bought it. LOL

So happy you found a YG one as I know that is what you really wanted. Are you keeping the RG one?

Yes for now I’m also keeping the RG. The center stone is much larger and it’s a cushion shape, so different enough. I just love how comfy they are to wear. Maybe in the future I’ll get one with white metal haha.

I wear all my jewelry to bed.

Another bad habit I have is stashing things then forgetting where I hid them. This has happened to me many times.
Last week I was freaking out because two rings were missing. They were given to me by my grandmother, and I always wear them together.
I tore the house apart, and finally found them.

Several weeks prior, we were about to leave the house, and I noticed they were out in plain view. I quickly tucked them out of sight, in an odd place.
Fast forward a few weeks, and I had absolutely no recollection of where I put them.
Now I try harder to put things back properly so this won't happen again!

I do the same thing..I think that’s what happened to my baguette band. I never did find it but my suspicion is that I tucked it away somewhere in the house because I had people coming over. I didn’t have time to get my pouch out. I’m even more careful now.

Yep, this is exactly what I tend to do!
It's maddening!

I impulse buy - or retail therapy. Maybe not a big deal at Target, but expensive when I impulse buy jewelry. This is why I disappear on and off from PS. Then I come back around "innocently" and I start buying again.

I need to have a big purge.

Yep. Me too, no dang patience here. Which has been a costly lesson in indeed...reset after reset til I finally get it right. The struggle is REAL.
