What are your bad jewelry habits?

My mom did this. She did lose stuff sometimes and I think that habit contributed :naughty:

I've definitely had a few scares! One was this summer while on vacation. I had a tri colored, gold braided necklace with me in the trip (wedding gift).. Took it off carelessly in the rental condo, and could not find it for hours

Haha! Yes I do. And no he doesn’t. Probably because the pooch lays between us!!

Omg so true, I sometimes wear a cab ring at night but I don't wear anything with claws because my cat decides she wants to be petted at 3am when she mounts onto my chest (while I am was asleep) to demand it or else...

I'm thinking the pooch doesn't smush her face against your hands like some cats do.

I'm poor, and I spend a bit of my free time with you lot.
I can't help it, I just like ya. You all make me laugh and you lovingly feed my addiction vicariously with much care and attention.
I look at amazing jewelry and stones more than I should admit to.
And I dream and scheme for my next piece and lie to my little spinel box about how they'll be set. Soon. Shhhh, yes yes, soon. Knowing full well I'm soft BS-ing them something fierce because I wear a wedding stack. And that's it.

And we adore you, and envy your incredible prongs, and love your taste in stones!!! True story!

Man, this thread really makes me feel better than I am horrible about cleaning my jewelry. I also only take them off to wash hands about half the time usually because it’s a pain to take off a handful of rings and also I’m afraid of forgetting them. I do take them off to lotion but again since I usually have a healthy ring stack, it’s a big production and thus between the hand washing and lack of lotioning my hands get too dry especially this time of year.

I sleep in some of my plain gold (no diamonds) and a lot of times leave a necklace on too.

For PC pieces I really get honed in on an idea and that’s all I search for until I find it or find a way to make it. I also have a habit of buying stones before I have a complete set idea of what to do with it and I now have a little glass casket of gems that need some inspiration!

I sleep in jewelry...earrings, necklaces, rings, all of it. In fact, I choose jewelry designs based on comfort because I know I don't take things off.

But I will humble brag about how fastidious I am to make up for this bad habit. I obsessively detest grime, especially on my ring. I even bring a little bottle of dawn and toothbrush when travel so I can my jewelry clean daily....is that a bad habit?

I also sleep in my jewelry. All of it. Always have. I take "most" of it off to shower (rings and watch) but often leave on earrings and necklace. I don't take it off doing housework, gardening, or anything like that either. Amazingly, I've only once damaged one piece and it was just the tip of the claw prong on a side stone that needed fixing.

I tend to buy loose stones that I see and like, without a plan for them. Then end up having to buy more stones when I figure out what I want to do with the first stone, as that idea requires more stones. . .

I have a hard time having settings changed if it means I'm getting rid of the first custom setting. So I have several pieces I'd like to reset but can't bring myself to do it.

Nope, that's a me habit!

I take my jewelry off and leave it lying everywhere!!! Such a bad habit! Even if I take jewelry off in my bedroom, I leave it lying on top of the jewelry box.. not in it lol

One thing you might try—strategically placed ring dishes. I have found that there are specific rooms where I remove jewelry. Kitchen and bedroom, usually. So I have a pretty pottery jewelry tray (FAR FAR FAR FAR from the sink) in the kitchen, and rings and whatever else go there when I take them off in the kitchen.

In the bedroom I usually can’t be bothered with the jewelry box so I have a crystal ring dish (with a little post in the center). Rings go on it, earrings around the side.

It has helped tremendously in terms of knowing where things are.

Ok, question for y’all who sleep in jewelry: do you ever get peeling under your rings from trapped water? I tried sleeping in rings a billion years ago (as in, when I was in high school) and ended up with all kinds of skin peeling from trapped moisture under the rings.

It’s not something I can do now anyway because my hands swell too much overnight but I’m just curious.

Great idea, I will try this!!! Thank you <3

No, I don't. But I think I know what you mean and have seen that peeling on other peoples hands. I change my rings often so maybe it's because the shanks are all different sizes that it isn't an issue? Just a guess.

Not from sleeping in them no. I actually find the underside looks normal in the morning. Maybe my refusal to wear my actual ring size helps me here? I'm a 7.5 wearing 8.5 to 9 rings lol. But I definitely find peeling because of washing my hands too much without lotion after (which I do way too many times during the day >.<)

So I try to take my rings off while my lotion dries at least at night before bed. And then of course I ruin my good work by putting them straight back on to sleep in xD My skin gets worse in general the more I forget to slather on lotion. Hence my bad habit of just slapping it on my hands, making sure to get under the ring. Then then being forced to clean it extra because I know youre not supposed to do that later lol.

I have not had that problem. I’ve been sleeping with my rings on since my wedding 34 years ago. I also sleep in my studs and some of my necklaces. Sorry you have found it to be troublesome to your skin @Tonks

Seeing what other PSers are considering/buying and getting fixated by them. Like right now, a subtle diamond tennis necklace is my obsession. Do I need it? Would I wear it often (to the grocery store, etc.)? No....but I want one!!!

I’m a rock collector, not a jewelry collector. I like variety and enjoy wearing stones that are less common. As a result, I have seven hundred million solitaires. Now I am working on consolidating lesser-worn items into fewer, hopefully less boring, jewelry pieces (“declutteresets”). Soon I will run into the problem of having only stones remaining with sizes/shapes/colors that preclude symmetrical settings. I predict a lot of “graduated line“ pieces..

1. Almost never taking them off.
2. Spending way too much time on websites imagining if I had picked something else and how I’d feel but always coming to the conclusion that I made the right choice.

I thought of another - buying “little things” to satiate my desire for shiny things when I should be saving for the long term bigger bling goals. Case in point - getting these cute gold padlock earrings yesterday from TJMaxx

Those are so cute! Are they solid gold or plated? I can’t have nice earring because I always loose one :( plus my ears can only take gold…. No silver or plating. Adds up replacing gold pairs so I don’t wear earrings. Sadly

This. I generally only remove my studs, pendant & rings for cleaning. I have never suffered with peeling under my rings, but my sister does. Her wedding rings are horribly tight & she can’t get them off, so I wonder if that maybe a factor?

My hands have started to swell & shrink a lot these past few years, so getting my rings off can hurt my knuckle & leave it throbbing & red. At other times they are spinning around & clinking together. Stupid hormones!

I only take my rings off when I wash my hair. I keep a necklace and any bracelets on 24/7. Earrings I always take off before bed. Never had a problem with water under my rings causing skin problems, but I cant wear silver anymore than a few days. Something in my skin causes it to go black really quickly.
I am allergic to nickel, and interestingly I can “smell” it.
Weird.
I did buy a 925 silver eternity ring to see if I liked the look and woke up the next morning to this!
Yep, it had nickel in it, not 925 silver. I should have sniffed it first!

Impulse purchases—in the second hand market—bc I pay close to gold weight! I reason that I’m just wearing my investment, lol. And then the cycle of purging begins and I list that “great deal that I just had to have a few years ago”!on eBay. And usually I do break even, sometimes I make a few bucks more. I’ve lost count of how many rings I have but I started an auditing system earlier this year. I’ve listed as many of my purchases and sales as I can accurately recall since I started this vicious cycle. I even created an “Heirloom” category. The rest I categorized as casual jewelry and thus, the time will come when I will sell them. Funny how great my memory is when I look at my collection. I know exactly when and where and what I paid for any given piece. I find it very fascinating and can attribute this ability to the rush that I get when I buy jewelry. Don’t ask me if I can remember anything about my clothing purchases, lol.

My other bad habit is that I have managed to turn my DD into a jewelry fan! Yellow gold is her weakness when it comes to her purchases, but she happily shops in my vault for free, lol.
