What color metal for this "silver" (gray) sapphire?

Agreed; in my case, I don't think I have any skin tone. :P2

Yes, I am a huge Hemmerle fan and have a boatload of inspo photos but not the six-figure budget. All their stones are 15x12mm or so (6 - 12 cts, IIRC).

I did see that new Tiffany line (maybe via a post here) -- the one on the far right is a perfect "copy" of the ring we had made 5+ years ago. This was that banged-up ring, above (the platinum ring on the left in my original photos) on my son's finger hot off the bench:

And I would probably be looking to do something like this (below) with the gray sapphire. This is my warm-toned chrysoberyl ring in green gold:

That chryso...can we see an arm length shot of that baby?

I remember these IVY NY spinel rings. So different, even thought they are halos.

I'm team warm gold as well. I think the contrast of yellow or rose gold would really make the stone pop. Beautiful stone!

Sorry, fell off for a few days. Here are a few pics of the grey gold with spinels, as well as next to platinum and white gold. The difference is very subtle.

I’m not sure what the alloy is, google indicates typically iron, but I’d have to ask DK. D62360F6-CC14-4FF2-BF77-5C77F8FFAF14.jpeg

I was perusing through the CVB Inspried Instagram page and came across this setting. It’s 14KT nickel-free, unplated white gold and love the color of the metal. I am a huge fan of brushed finish too…

Platinum. Platinum all the way through. And not just because it's my preferred metal alongside plated white gold, but because in the pictures with this stone it just looks like a perfect match.

Besides, if you want a heavy ring, platinum is the metal that will provide. Love the weight, gold can't give you that same feeling.

I agree with everything here.

One thing to mention is color of platinum varies (for example PT900 with iridium is very white and PT950 with ruthenium has IMO a blackish gray tone). There’s a couple threads discussing Platinum alloys and what color they are. From my experience, only a few benches use iridium alloys anymore, most don’t.

A thick platinum ring will be very heavy, though.

Unplated white gold is yellow toned, which will pull out the blue in any stone.

Well you are certainly more helpful than I was on your thread! So thank you!

I did not realize that about the different colors of the various platinum alloys -- i would want the grayest.

I would avoid yellowish WG but since a nickel-containing alloy is not an option for me, it was already out of the running. Color-wise, I prefer the "browner" palladium flavor.

Yes, we like heavy. All the men's rings I've made for myself or family are 25 - 30 grams. I can do 30 g, easy -- doesn't even slow down my typing! I like them thick on the backside, too, so they don't flop around and I am laughing as I am writing this...

looking forward to seeing it on your hand
im no help with metals but i like the idea of a grey satin finish which is very unlike me but i think it would compliment the colour of the stone which i like very much
i love men's rings so keep us all up to date on what you deside

So are you thinking DKs palladium wg in matte finish? I saw the CvB pic above. (Hard to believe is the same metal as the palladium wg polished is one of the whitest metals I've ever seen. )

Is this question for me? I have not worked with DK. This would be Inken or maybe Gary Roe, if they have the bandwidth.

The palladium WG I have seen (and worn) is brownish. Bright white Pd WG must be rhodium-plated, no?

I am still hoping to hear/learn more about gray gold with iron or iron + Pd.

@LilAlex No worries, I was making assumptions :)
DK's palladium wg is super white w/ NO PLATING. ( I'm not sure how they do it but it's magical if you want hassle free & nickel free wg.)
The zircon ring is DKs palladium wg. The band is DKs 14k grey gold. Hard to photo the difference but in hand the band is decidedly a darker grey.

I love your design idea- it's going to be a knockout ring!

I am team warm gold, be it yellow or rose! Or there is also a green gold which sounds fun. But I did set a grey-toned diamond in a 14k yellow gold signet style chunky ring, DK "warmed it up" and made it what he called an antique yellow gold? It was much richer of a tone than my other 14k pieces. Here's a video of it.

Total thread jack, but I have to say @Mooshi -- that ring is SO AWESOME!

OK; now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

I love the look of your son's worn platinum ring. It would be a great metal for your sapphire---it almost feels like it would be the white metal version of your chrysoberyl ring. Grey gold also looks interesting for this project.

It will be great to see the finished piece!
