Wow, everyone here is so smart and has cool jobs.

I''m a writer/editor -- too heavy on the latter and too light on the former, sadly. I''m writing a book in addition to my real life job

Feb 2003bride-How did you like management consulting for non-profits? I am considering trying to break into that when I finish my MBA and would love any comments/advice/info you might have...(I currently work in the non-profit sector doing fundraising/internal strategy)

SAHM is a fantastic gig. Bet your three underage demanding divas and middle aged man take a lot of work

Great to hear from you, Gwen! I''ve been a lurker for a while now, so I''ve seen some of your posts (sorry, that may be sliiiiightly creepy).

Anyway, it''s awesome to hear from some of the U.K. posters. I love London. I think it''s probably one of the greatest cities in the world, really. Spent a year there when I was little, and studied art, theater, and British history & culture there a few years back. I''ve also been on a smattering of shorter vacations there. It''s safe to say that London has changed my life and heart in a very positive way. I would give anything to be back.. even if only for a short while.
Hahah, nah, you aren''t creepy. I don''t think so yet, anyway.

Even though I teach (and sort of live) in London, I''m not actually a Brit. My future hubs is--he''s from up North in Scarborough--but I was born outside NYC and spent most of my life in Maryland. So far I''ve been here for just over 2 1/2 years, and will probably be living here in England (possibly not London, though) for a long time to come. Very cool that you got to live here as a kid! I used to dream about doing stuff like that when I was young. Any idea when you''ll be back?

I am currently a SAHM who teaches piano lessons to children on the weekends. My B.A. is in Music, but I was working as a marketing manager at a law firm for years before I had my son. For the past 3 years I have been a SAHM, but about 2 years ago I started teaching piano lessons on the weekends too.
Vesper - I didn''t know you taught piano - how fun! Must be rewarding to watch the kids learn and excel. (I wish I could find a PT job that could be worked in around my kids. Last year I watching two kids after school, along with my kids, and helping them with reading and loved it. . .

)
Hey MC! Yeah, it''s fun to work with little kids - mostly the ones I work with are between the ages of 6-10. It sounds like helping out kids with reading, like you were doing, would be really rewarding too.

I used to be a history professor at a university, and now I work in grantmaking at a small Federal agency.
Clio, history professor is my dream job. I am planning to go back to school to start my Ph.D. in about 2 years. Why did you leave - did you not enjoy it? Do you recommend it as a career?

MC: Well I received my BS in marine biology, but that has very little prep for actual care of tanks, besides learning the chemistry of it all. I used to work on a site that answers consumer questions called wetwebmedia. You can look that up, its very helpful. Then for a while I worked in a live fish store and got many of my clients there. The rest has been just word of mouth.
I can tell you it def cannot be your primary job, the actually money is too sporadic for that - but it did pay for most of our honeymoon.

I''ve learned to charge on a grading scale depending on tank size, whats in the tank (i.e reef vs fish only, planted whatnot) The best resource is having many contacts in the actual sale of the tanks. That way if someone buys a tank set up, the sales associate can give your business card and tell them you can do set up/maintenance if they need a helping hand. And remember it includes A LOT of travel.......

Eh, sorry, not up to 35 yet.

Right now I have: 1 guppy tank at 5 gallons. Then 5 betta tanks at 10, 5, 5, 3, and 2. lol I'm going to upgrade the guppy tank to 10 gallons b/c there are two pregnant females in there. We've had a few babies from the first pregnancy but they disappeared! The 2 gallon is actually a fish bowl. Poor betta. He does have a heater and I change his water about every 4 days. His fins look better than the bettas in the filtered tanks. A few of the bettas have vertical breeding strips, but I'm too afraid to stick a female in the tank of the betta who blows bubbles. Can't imagine being stuck with cups of bettas all over the house!

Sounds like it'd be a great way to enjoy a hobby without ending up with 20 tanks in your house! I'll check out that website. Thanks for the recommendation.

I have 6 tanks right now and my focus is on Bettas. It'd be nice to do real set-ups for people rather than small cramped unheated/filtered bowls that most have. One of my female bettas is in a 10-gallon and she's so happy. She patrols the tank going back and forth. If I stick my finger in the water, she bites me! lol

ETA - My son is obsessed with selling guppies. I am hoping that may lead to setting up tropical tanks for people. The guppies aren't very good at making babies yet! Hopefully the females drop some soon. One is getting fairly rounded at this time.

I sell stuff.

My sister on the other hand is also an opera singer who has her masters in Voice p. Bella, I wonder if you two know eachother. She currently holds a full time job as well as does some private lessons. Since we all live in NYC I would imagine your paths have crossed at one point or another although she doesn''t have a ton of regional work on her resume. She spent all last summer working in Germany.

I'm a chemical engineer by training. I worked in the food industry for almost 4 years but lost my job a couple months ago. It was actually a good thing because I wanted out of food and hated my company. Now I'm trying to get a job at DH's company working in microelectronics or something similarly technical.

I'm currently unemployed and spend my days hanging out with my bunny. Yay for unemployment checks! Haha

I''m a research lab manager at a public university. But I also just started a part time master''s degree today! Not sure exactly what I want to do with it... maybe go into Biotechnology lab management or something...

SO wants to start a micro-brewery so I may end up just running that in a few years if those plans work out.

I''d also love to get a masters in enology and work at a winery making wine. Too bad there aren''t many openings or I would do it in a flash.

i''m a speech language pathologist and i''m obsessed with my job
