Air traffic control! Wow! And a PILOT! Double wow!

I have a friend whose little bro is a pilot, and he also opted for air traffic control because of job scarcity around that time. But then it was so stressful he couldn''t handle it and he''s now looking for a new career.

So, I''m super impressed! Coolio.

Hmm...

I just started my first full-time job. I am only 21 though (22 in a month), so it isn''t a shocker.

I have undergrad degrees from UCLA (which I loved, so I knew then I wanted to work at a college/university). I then got a MA from Columbia (History and Ed) and then a MS from the Univ. of Pennsylvania in Higher Education Management (yep, odd, I know).

I work for a University of California campus as an Academic Counselor in Engineering.
Ummm WOW!! Overachieve much? LOL. What did you get your undergrad in 5 minutes & your masters in 2? Holy heck girl, you FLEW through school. I''m gonna start calling you Doogie.

I am stay at home mom & I also teach yoga & fitness classes on the side. (not too much).

But before that (didnt'' have my son till I was 34) I was product manager in the Telecommunications Industry. I managed ATM, VPN, TLS, and Frame Relay products...busy. Prior to that I was in business to business sales in telecom (service, systems, wireless solutions) so I am pretty much a "telecom head".

To the previous poster who said they are afraid their English degree won''t get them far, well, that''s what I have... a BA in English. But I started in sales & worked my way up the ladder. ONce I had the sales experience, it was easy. But I HATE sales...

I was gearing up to change careers when I got pg with Jake. So I just quit instead. A few things I''d like to do:

Write for a magazine
Corporate Training (for sales people, sales engineers etc. in the telecom industry--easy transition considering my 12 years experience)
Marcom Manager in Telecom (marcom = marketing communications)

I wouldn''t want to be a product manager again, the sales training portion was great, but the financial side (5 year forecasting, margins, etc) was a struggle seeing as I do not have a finance background. That job was only "half" a good fit, but I got some great experience.

I''ll wait till this new baby is in pre-school & then I''ll seek out one of the above jobs. I''d like to work on a contract basis (not full time) so I can spend time with my kids as they grow up. I have been doing some freelance writing for an oncology practice---all marketing materials--press releases, annual reports, sales letters (to generate referrals from G.P.''s, OB''s ect to their cancer treatment facilities) to keep my resume from looking barren while I am at home.

My job sounds really vague...I''m a management consultant. BUT, it is what I really wanted to do after college, and I find myself using my degree (bachelors in economics and math) a lot!

Essentially we help companies with problems or questions they don''t have the resources, ability or time to answer themselves. So, I find myself doing a lot of data gathering, analysis and also communications of results to the client. So far I have been getting experience in a lot of industries (health care, consumer products, non profit, private equity, etc) which will help me decide what I want to do in the "long run" (I''m only 24)

mine is kind of standard for the area we live in, almost everyone is in high tech it seems around here.

i do online/internet marketing and e-commerce for a software company. since people always ask me what that technically means, i usually have this link handy which gives a better explanation than i could! i started out doing regular marketing 8 years ago and then moved into the internet space which is much more fun in my opinion!! it's really taken off in the last few years as well as more and more people are buying online.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_marketing

I'm a contracts negotiator/associate in a tech company. I've been here for 9 months how. I'm fairly happy, and plan to stay here for another year or so. I deal mostly with supply chain contracts and procurement, but hope to get into sales contracts when I move to a new company and industry.

Other jobs I've had:
I've been a legal advisor for a university department.
Florist.
Interior designer (not accreditted, and not good at it cause I don't really care for OTHER people's tastes as I much as I do my own...lol)

I have a BA in English Lit. Which is my first love. And a JD (and bar admitance).

I write novels in fits and starts and hope to start writing again fairly soon because my characters are starting to complain to me again. LOL.

Ideal Job would be a novellist.

Fortunately I have a range for marketable skills as well, I write well, am a quick learner, good researcher, good negotiator, and problem solver, and I'm good at sales.
I am not good at marketing myself though... so one of these days I'm going to have to ask Indy for help with that! LOL.

TACORI!!! LOVE the baby AV.. looks beautiful!

Thanks Diamondfan and Gypsy! My most precious gem of all. Hehe!

Thanks J! I love that it is a profile view (look at that cute little nose!) with its little arm up. Diver called it the ''baby power'' pose.

Tacori,

I need to see that avatar enlarged. Can you blow up the photo and post it in the body of this thread? I want to be able to see that baby, doggone it!

I have a BFA in creative writing.

Waited tables for two years at a country club.

Went to law school. Passed the bar.

Worked as an associate for two huge law firms...hated it.

Now work for an appellate judge and I really like my job...

And CONGRATS Tacori!!!!

You'd be fun to work with.

By day I am the Chief Compliance Officer for a hedge fund manager and by night/weekend I''m a real estate agent. As for an English degree--that''s what I''ve got too! I spent 1-1/2 miserable years in law school before I bolted, and then ended up many years later with a masters degree in financial markets, with more than half of my classes being taken in the law school anyway. Go figure!

Too cute!!

I''m in the telco industry also, so I actually know what divergrrl is referring to when she talks about ATM, VPN, and Frame Relay
16.gif
I work in IT at the help desk and manage our PBX, voice mail and phones, among other things. I actually have a great schedule and work half the day at home, this way I can be home when my daughter gets home from school. Since I have to juggle work and my daughter, I haven''t been able to get too deep into my career, but she''ll grow up soon enough and I can work on it then.

Some people (like my husband and parents) would say I''m a perpetual student...

But really, I am just finishing up my second masters'' degree at UPenn this summer. The first one was in psychological services (and I became certified in school counseling)... afterwards, I worked on a grant-funded project at Penn for a year, then was an academic advisor at Drexel''s engineering school for another year... then came back to Penn for another masters in professional counseling. This past year, I also worked part-time as a counselor at a small women''s college (part of the requirements for licensure).

So right now I''m starting the job-search... not sure where I''ll end up, but ideally I''d love to work part-time at one thing, and then do some consulting and independent stuff as a supplement. I''m not very good at the Mon-Fri, 9-5 type jobs... I need something with a little more autonomy.

So keep your fingers crossed for me please!!

This is so fun - I''m enjoying reading about you all!

My turn ... I''m a hedge fund lawyer in London. Worked in the US for 2 years post-law school, then moved over here for a change of pace and more networking opportunities! I love it here but will move back to the US in January 2008.

The fiance-like substance is a lawyer as well, which goes to show that I should never say never ... I clearly remember proclaiming on numerous occasions that I would never date another lawyer

I love the fund industry and wish I knew more about the business side. A lot of it''s just over my head.

Krissie -- another kindered spirit! Glad to meet you!

Oh my gosh, you''re all just a bunch of smartypants!!! I''m muy impressed!!

As for me, I''m boring -- I manage the editorial/production dept. for an IT consulting firm. It''s boring and I don''t enjoy it, but I''m staying here till I have the babies and then we''ll see what direction my life goes in!! Right now, daycare for two would basically be my entire salary, so I think that alone is a good push for me to get out of this job and into a new one (if I can''t swing being a SAHM)!

I''ve made this point before, but in general PSers are a bunch of well-eduated and well-spoken people -- it''s part of the reason I really enjoy hanging out here! This place is the Harvard of forums

Marvel: LOL....my parents/MIL could never FATHOM what the heck I did... so nice to be understood!!! Its nice to see another "one of us" here, telco technology is always interesting to me, that''s one thing I love about it.

I''m a State Policy Advisor for the US Department of Justice...whatever that means! Basically, I manage all law enforcement/criminal justice grants to the state of CA. Prior to that, I managed evaluation and research projects for the US Dept. of Labor. Someone here mentioned maybe working for Mathematica or MDRC- I''ve managed their projects before and they''re both top-notch firms! I have an MA in Sociology.

I defected from a PhD programme.

Now I''m intrigued - one of my bosses is the co-owner of a very successful London-based hedgefund, and being in fundraising I come across a lot of the CEO''s. They all seem to make lads of ££££££, feel guilty and decide they need to get into politics to save the world and poor people! Nice people on the whole though.

Seems like a fascinating business although one of my colleagues is dating a guy who is setting one up and she is soooo miserable because he is always at work!

Well, it gives me some hope that there is another English degree out there actually making money, haha. So many become teachers and no one understood why I was majoring in English if I wasn''t going to teach. Close minded, I''d say.

I am a labor and delivery RN. I have a master's in Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) with a certification in women's health. Next yr (after the wedding),I will most likely look to make a career move... Right now I work in a very busy labor and delivery, and the job is intense. So, we'll see!!

Just you wait, poptart! I earned a BA-English and here I am 7 years later back in school getting my M.Ed/multiple subject teaching credential. If you told me 5 years ago that this is what I''d be doing I''d have told you "you''re crazy!"

In all seriousneess, I hope you find the perfect non-teaching job for you...they do exist, they are just hard to come by.

Poptart--I''m going to second Kimberly''s response! And since you have an English degree, you should know that studying literature prepared you to think critically, to develop original ideas, and to solve problems. I always planned on becoming a college prof with my English degree, and I taught college for a while, but here I am now teaching high school.

And as for making money with an English degree, don''t be so quick to dismiss teachers! I''m not sure where you live, but we start our high school teachers at 45K a year with only a bachelor''s degree and NO experience. It isn''t huge, but it''s not too bad. (For a 21 year-old with no experience, at least.) A master''s will get you about 10K more to start. Most of my colleagues retire at age 52 making 120K, and they have a life-long pension of 80% of that (math people--what is that, 96K?) Not too shabby for nine months a year, I''ll say. A lot of my peers from law school started out making far less in law than I did in education--and they had MUCH more school tuition debt!

But, of course, any teacher will tell you that you will not survive teaching if you are working for the money.

Speaking of English majors and law school--how many of us on here have a B.A. in English and attended at least some law school? I count at least four--seems like a common path! How funny.
