I''m in the Deco camp, but it also depends on who''s asking.

I sometimes say, "why do you want to know, are you shopping for a ring? oooh, can i help?" I turn it around back to them!

oh I love that answer!!! putting that one in my pocket :)

okay corny response lol:

it isn''t measured in carrots, it''s measured in beets, the beets of my heart...

I honestly think most people who ask are not mentally calculating what it cost (as someone already pointed out, most people have no idea what diamonds cost anyway), but are just curious to know what different sizes look like in person.

Even as a guy, people ask me all the time what size my diamond is. I'm not offended. I'd rather tell them the size as opposed to wait for them to touch my stone. Even there, in touching my diamond I've decided they are just paying tribute to something really pretty and that by touching it, they have complimented it somehow. Anyway, back to the subject. I tell people my stones size when they ask. I'm very matter of fact about it and say, the center stone is 1.12 carats and the side stones are 1/3 carat each.

I don''t mind when people ask me, because I ask other people too.
9.gif

But I usually answer 1.64 and if they give me a confused look, I tell them it''s a little bigger than one and a half carats. Some people are so funny because they have no idea how big is a carat or two. I had a few people ask me if it was 3 carats! I laughed and said, "I wish". Then I''ll set them straight and they don''t seem to believe me.

I love your answer, Rod! I think I feel the same... of course when I was preggers I was the type that *wanted* people to come up and touch the bella LOL It was so cool, so awesome! And I could see myself protecting it until I saw a gush of awe and then relenting with glee LOL I know here a 2.7 stone is FAR from unheard of, but I feel funny saying 2.71 like I should just round it down to 2 and call it good lol

Cehra, now that we''re all getting to know you here on PS and we see how much pleasure your pet rock gives you (and well it should), if I were you and anyone asked, I''d absolutely tell them 2.71 carats and just beam!!!!

I feel funny even saying it here and it''s not even one of the big stones lol One of the reasons I wanted it set e/w was because it looked smaller and I was *OKAY* with that. I''m not a blingy person at ALL, the reason I got a big stone was because I wanted the big facets and performance. If I didn''t want it with me ALL the time, I''d likely never show anyone LOL BTW okay you''ll laugh... I''m *endowed* and can easily fit my ringbox in my cleavage without even showing a tiny bump to the outside world, so that''s where the little koala spends most of it''s time, in my pouch aka my "treasure chest" as dh calls it LOL

For a 2.71 I'd just say "two and three quarters."

I have a 1.50 ct and I just say "one and a half carats."

I don't get offended when people ask how big it is. Most people are asking because they think it looks big, or they have no idea how big a stone that size is.

I have been asked. Both times by people with much bigger stones, so I felt uncomfortable.

I like that "oooh are you looking for a new stone? Let me help you!"

Cehra if I were you I'd say 2.7 or 2 and 3/4! Don't pull it down to 2ct.

I don''t mind when people ask. I get curious too but am too shy to ask. My stone is 1.72 and I usually just say 1 3/4 ct because I feel like most people would look (or have before I started rounding up) like I was crazy when I have the EXACT weight.
tacori - did I read somewhere that your band is 6mm wide? how long is your stone? I like the amount of overhang you have...

My stone is 8.2mm long
2.gif

Maybe you should just say 8.2 and let them figure out that it''s mm!!!

Yes, I like that! Most people will think it''s 8.2cts and get very quiet.
9.gif

Evil laugh. Yes that is what I want to do. I better go look for an 8.2 now.

I love it! You know those 9mm settings that you see that cut way in in the center and then they put like a 1 carat or even smaller in the middle? Well every time I''ve gone into a shop they try to get me to get one of those, and I can understand why in a way.... they''ve probably been thinking for years, this one carat is too small for this 9mm band, we need a 9mm stone in there! Ugh! I''m like I don''t want a 9mm band... I think your overhang is perfect :)

Aaaaaagh, you just gave me a flashback! I couldn''t STAND the belly-touching. I''d find myself shrinking away as people reached out to touch the unnatural hugeness of it. I''d rather have them grease up my diamond any day.

my big old belly!! I loved that it squirmed and kicked and moved and felt weird and entertained me and I loved sharing it. I remember being 40 weeks preg with #2 (and he was over 10 pounds!) and feeling like I could go another 9 months! If my body actually liked being pregger I''d have loved to have been a surrogate. Alas, my body hated it but *I* loved it! I never felt better than when I was pregnant... I felt more natural than at any other time. Totally at peace with every awkward curve. Well, except the stretchmarks! lol

I''ve never been pregnant... but that made me think of my friend/coworker who became pregnant with her first child last year... when she was a few months in and started feeling the baby kick, she would come flying into my office every 10 minutes saying "he''s kicking! feel! feel!"... and of course every time I''d put my hand on her belly, he''d stop. So she''d come running back in 10 minutes later! But since she was typically a more reserved person, it was really sweet to see her genuine excitement over those new sensations and wanting to share them with everyone else!

Semi off-topic. For those of you who don''t answer directly.

Is there a nice way to ask someone what size stone they have so that you get an answer or would you not answer directly no matter what?

I never tried on rings of different shapes or sizes in the store. We just bought something that was okay that suited our budget. I''ve always wanted an OEC, an asscher, or a cushion. When I see those shapes I perk up. One day I plan to have *at least* one of those cuts. And considering how rare they are in stores, I''m likely to ask the wearer of the ring if it is in fact X shape and what size it is.

I personally would be thrilled to answer any questions about my ring, as long as I knew WHY they were being asked. So I guess the politest way would be to explain why you''re curious.

I agree! My sitting is always shown (by Tacori) with a 1 ct RB and I think it looks better with an EC. I never like it when the band is wider than the diamond. I like some overhang.

Totally! Though I might just be eating my words and getting an 8mm band LOL! That leaves me 3/4mm overhang per side ROFL (not much) I went and tried on a million rings today and still only ONE type looks good... ugh... and the only place I''ve found it ready made is shane co LOL I mean they still have to cut the bridge and drop a basket in there, but other than that (and that it is 8mm) um... but I looked at 2mm and 3mm and 4mm and 5mm bands and they all look ridiculously *thin* on my stone. I don''t know if it''s ME or what, but putting a 9.5mm stone on a 4mm band is too much overhang. I don''t want it to look like an engagement ring... I want it to look like it''s already a full set, so I might just be giving in on the wider mm.... but at least this one is 8 and not 7 LOL Totally agree with having diamonds smaller than the band... that''s where embelishments come in handy like halos etc!! BTW I have pics of my stone on the 8mm setting if I can figure out how to get them off my camera (sync isn''t working on this computer ugh) but they''ll be blurry...

Funny I didn''t see this before.. ??
33.gif
This very subject came up last weekend by my step-daughter.. I know full well this question did NOT come from this 13 year old, but that her Mom was asking through her.. my step-daughter does love my ring but asked what size specifically my diamond was.. and while it sits at 1.51 carats.. I told her it was not quite 2 or just under 2.. something like that.. GR!
29.gif
Its not her Mom''s business if its .02 or 2.00! If she wants to know herself, freaking ASK.

Some day.. it might GROW into 2.. but holy cow.
20.gif
doncha love it? LOL I take it you don''t get along with the woman?

For my 1.37 e-ring, I say " a little over 1 carat." For my 3.56 carat ring, I say "three and a half."

My #2 was a ten-pounder too (10lbs 7oz to be exact) and I could barely move by 7 months! I don't think you're normal.

I loved the *idea* of pregnancy and the anticipation of getting ready for baby, but the physical pregnancy? Gaa. I was huge and miserable for three months straight all four times. I always said pregnancy was way worse than labor.

And how's this for a question from strangers: "OMG when are you due?! You look like you're about to pop!" Extra great when you still have three months to go. Good times . . .

I have only been asked a few times, and I say a carat and a half. (it''s 1.52)

Only a couple of friends and I have REALLY gotten into the specifics, since I upgraded, but it doesn''t bother me to share that info. I have no reason to hide it and for the ones who are still single, I think it is a good way to get an idea of what you will pay...
