What has happened to skirts?

I’m now retired so I’m not buying business style clothing anymore but DD is off to a big deal Conference and needed some business style clothing.
She’s still a Uni so apart from some fancy dresses it’s all super casual (she wears protective gear in the lab)
Do you think we could find any skirts that didn’t look like hippie beach wear or sparkly black tie dinner?
Everywhere it’s shorts.
Bermuda shorts in linen so no matter what you look like you slept in your clothes.
Sorry I loathe linen, the perpetual creases drive me bonkers.
Where have all the skirts gone?
I wanted DD to sort of “level up” because this is an International Conference and she’ll be the youngest there by many years. It also doesn’t help that she still looks like she’s 14 and she’s conscious of that. This is her first networking event and there’s potential for overseas collaboration and I wanted her to not look like she was someone’s kid sister who tagged along for fun.
I said, not really half joking, that I will put her University Medal on a chain so she can wear it so people know to take her seriously. DH said once’s she speaks they’ll know to take her seriously.
True.
And yes, we went with the linen Bermuda shorts. They’ll look great with her Doc Marten boots.
Grrr, kids today.

I still wear skirts and one type of skirt that I have embraced is the satin skirt. You can dress it up or down depending on the tope and shoes. I have satin midi skirt in 3 colors…champagne, wine and black. IMG_6084.jpeg

I’d say dresses are the way forward these days. I gave up skirts because of the need to find a top to match, plus the “Will I tuck in, or hang loose or wear a belt” dilemma.

Many of the smart business attire type websites in the U.K. have a lot of inspo for dresses, check out Me and Em or The Fold.

Nowadays, I would only wear a skirt in the form of a long skirt with a separate top for formal occasions with a dress code of "Black Tie" or "White Tie".

I find this gives me more options for mix and match for the tops, in that I could wear them with black trousers as well as long black skirts.

I don't like wearing skirts even when I was at school, good job there was the option to wear trousers in those days.

The main issue with wearing skirts personally is the need to wear hosiery and I HATE wearing tights and prefer stockings. Same with dresses, good job it was only once a week for church, and I skipped church as much as I could in my senior/final year.

Can't wear the ones without a belt, so it is a bit of a faff. Hence I would only wear a long skirt (or a dress) very occasionally for formal events.

DK :))

Good question @Bron357 I used to wear skirts in the 80s and 90s and come to think of it I haven't seen any for a long time. I only wear dresses or pants or leggings and tunics now. Interesting

As for tights/stockings I have not worn any since the 90s. TG. Those things were always torture devices IMO as are bras. Which I rarely wear :)

years ago in between hardwear store jobs i spent nine months selling fabric and habadasory -it was not a match made in heaven
but i can remember one of the ladies saying that dresses were so old fashoned -this was in 2003
skirts will come roaring back in sooner or latter im sure

is their time to get something made by a local seamstress ?

I honestly can't remember the last time I wore a skirt, although I still have a few in the closet. I wear mostly pants, and the occasional dress in the summer. When I was working and needed to go to a serious meeting, I'd wear a dress. I think they are so much easier, although I would need to wear tights in the winter. Now that I'm not working, the only time I've worn a dress (other than a summer casual dress) was to go to a funeral.

I live in skirts! I cannot tolerate pants—they feel constrictive. I find the best skirts at thrift stores! Score for me.

I love skirts and dresses. Skirts and dresses are more flexible size-wise because they don't have to fit precisely around the bottom. For me, it's impossible to find pants that fit me. And like Nala said, pants feel too constricting.

Personally, I see skirts a lot in the nicer catalogs, malls and stores.

I'm sorry, but wearing shorts to a work or professional function is big no-no in my opinion.

I sew and I have boxes of vintage sewing patterns from the '80s through mid-2000s. I have a lot of skirt patterns in there, so I'm good as long as there is still some place to buy decent fabrics. I live in a rural area and all the jobs are in factories or warehouses or medical facilities. There isn't much call for business office attire like I enjoyed in the '80s and '90s. I noticed the people in the banks are pretty poorly dressed because most of the clothing they can buy locally is junk. Kohl's, Goodwill, and Salvation Army, and a couple of consignment stores, are the only places to buy women's clothing without having to make a 30-40 mile round trip. It's sad, really.

HI:

I love skirts and dresses--and wear them. In winter, I wear tights only if I have to--I don't like the compression they provide. I wear high boots.

cheers--Sharon

I love this, where did you get it?

Can't remember the last time I wore a skirt, but then, the ones I see out there are not for me.

Ha, I have slip skirts in 3 colors also! Love love love.

I love Samantha Sung shirt dresses. She also makes full skirts. You can buy ready-to-wear or custom. Absolutely beautiful designs and materials.

On the other end of the spectrum, I just found a J. Crew dress that is so comfortable I bought another in a second colorway. Here it is in ivory, with ivory tall boots:

On the latests runways I've seen a resurgence of structure and fine tailoring coming back, so, its a trickle down effect. Also will depend on what she really likes and enjoys. for instance, some absolutely don't like those types of clothes no matter what.

ive always thought a skirt and a nice shirt or jacket looks nice business atire, but ive never had that kind of job
personally i like a long bias cut summery shirt, flattering and feels nice on

It sounds like this is an academic/scientific conference that you’re preparing your daughter to go to, am I correct?

Because if so, I just want to point out that the idea of what constitutes “professional” attire and academia is very different than what would constitute professional attire in business. Nobody wears suits in academia except the President and other high mucky mucks. I wouldn’t even call it “business casual” that is normal in academia/scietific spaces.
