The seller's description: "Up for your consideration is a vintage art deco 10k yellow gold ring with what appears to be a purple sapphire or possibly a topaz. I'm not 100% sure on the stone as I'm not a gemologist. This is a size 6.75, definitely an older piece."

I think there's no way that's a sapphire. My guess is maybe glass? In one of the pictures I think I can see little bubbles, which would be consistent with glass, but it's hard to see.

What do you think it is?

Well we can't identify it from pictures... getting it tested at a jeweler would be the best way. Why don't you think it's a sapphire? It looks more like a sapphire than glass to me.

Could also be amethyst.

I don't think it's a sapphire because of the low price.

My best guess is Freke's

Sapphire, amethyst, tourmaline, synthetic something...I can't tell from a picture. It's cute though.

I don't know why they immediately went to sapphire, seems like an unusual color for one (for the general public who are used to inky blues and maybe pinks!)

I wonder what brought them to that conclusion.

I maintain amethyst. I used to have one almost the same exact color.

vote for amethyst, if it is colour change ? can think for other side . synthetic or natural ? still questionable. may be it is lab created alex

Based on colour and price, I'm guessing amethyst too. Do you have a loupe? Check the facet junctions to see how sharp or worn they are.

Could be a Zambian Amethyst (RARE)

Not with that colour and size.

PickieBee,
I'll do some research and see what I can find.

Just realized I did not explain myself well. Yes, it could be an amethyst but if it is Zambian, the highly prized colouration is richer and deeper, showing both blue and red flash. "Regular" Zambians are not rare.
