Hi
my sister purchased a sapphire that I was recently inquiring about on pricescope. we went with another yellow sapphire. it was described as oval but to me it seems more like a cushion!
the dimensions are: 7.2 x 6.9 x 3.8 Mm

so...
oval or cushion??

thanks!
Candice

roval? do you have a picture?

here's one:
so what do you think, oval or cushion setting?

Oval. Cushion would have more of a squarish shape

I think cushion.

haha i'm torn too. maybe I should have started a poll!?

I have a similar stone that was described by the cutter as an oval but looks to me like a cushion. I just call it an oval/cushion. Wordy, but gets the point across.

so did the oval/cushion- what shape setting did you set it in? :twirl:

I'm having a setting customized by Daniel M on Etsy. Here's the stone for reference:

It will be set east/west in a pendant with the chain connecting in a stationary way to the top 2 prongs.

so I think i'm probably going to have to have a setting customized for this cushioval :D

By the dimensions, it looks like it might fit in a 7x7 round setting.

thanks Jstarfireb!

Yeah, many stones are cut to get the most out of them, and this does not mean perfectly calibrated shapes and sizes. Many stock mountings, however, are made for perfectly calibrated shapes and sizes. I think you might have to go custom, but you may be able to find something that'll work, as jbstarfire suggested, in a 7mm round BUT it's definitely a setting-by-setting thing and you'll definitely want to consult the jeweler who's going to be doing the setting before buying anything. Actually, you can probably get the jeweler to recommendand order you a stock mount from Stuller or some such place that would work. I'd recommend Michael E from gemshoppe.com unless you have someone in mind already. He's reasonable priced and very easy to work with, not to mention used to working with colored gems, which, believe it or not, can be hard to come by. If you want to go custom, there are lots of directions to go!

This is one of those more commonly cut “native” stones where the rough is maximized, hence the non-calibrated dimension and neither oval nor cushion outline but a mixture of the two. You might be able to fit this into a 7 mm round or 7 mm cushion setting but it isn’t going to fit perfectly if you are particular about gaps and overhang.

Fat oval maybe? How about a waistline challenged (like me  ) oval to be more politicly correct.

Pete

I think of that shape as a fat cushion.

haha I can see it now...i'll be having a setting customized for my waistline challenged oval/cushion

thanks Harriet for your reply. I see it as a cushion too, thats why when I saw the description and the dimensions I questioned the "oval"
