What sort of quality can I expect?

Hi everyone,

I am a beginner beginning the search for the perfect stone. I am looking around the 4ct range for my center stone. Wondering what quality I can expect for say $80-100k?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I am not in the states and would perhaps need to source o/s.

Thanks very much,

Mif.

sorry I forgot to mention yes Round Brilliant is what I am after.

What sort of cut and colour specs could I be looking at?

color probably around H/I for the stones with good proportions.

:o

Are there many diamonds out there in that carat range?

Is an H coloured diamond quite colourless? Will there be visible warmth?

I guess I need to go out and look around but it is hard here at home the best deals are o/s.

If I am concerned about clarity will I be safe with VS2?

Thanks

Almost all VS2 will be eye-clean, most SI1 is also eye-clean. Only sure way is to ask the vendor.

This article might be useful.

For color, depends on your color sensitivity, most people are safe with H, but with the size you are looking at, might not be the case. Best to check it out personally at a well cut stone reliably graded by GIA/AGS. But difficult to find a stone the size you are looking for though. Maybe Tiffany?

You may see some color from the side.. But face down it will be white.. I think sticking with a G or H is wise...At this carat weight.

VS2, depends where the inclusions are... The bigger the stone... No way to generalize. But if I was looking for a 4 carat, I wouldn't pass up looking at VS2.. Or an SI1 for that matter... Could be the right sweet spot.

Does that include the setting? What kind of setting would you like? I know there are 20K settings out there, so I just want to make sure we're recommending something that fits your total budget.

Also, that's a big range. 20k. Where would you be most comfortable, price wise. And how big a diamond were you thinking, size wise?

i'll take a nice G VS2... :appl:

I am looking at a Leon setting and have been quoted about $5,000

I think about 4.10ish would be good.

I think $90k would be perfect but we can stretch to $110k for the right stone. This is without the setting costs.

If I were to go an Round Brilliant 4.03

H, VS2, GIA: Excellent Cut, Polish & Symmetry: Excellent, Fluorescence: Strong Blue for about $82,000 would I be on the right track? Would the strong fluorescence make it appear whiter?

The only one that looks promising from the numbers in the BGD suggestion is the H VS2, the rest have quite bad proportions. Use this as a rejection tool. https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

Do not bother about the fluor, it will only show its effect if it is strong and above and only in the presence of UV source and not all lighting condition have them.

Can't even make a guess as the GIA report is not uploaded.

Thanks for all your help :-)

Thanks so much.

If anyone has links to any that would be a good buy that would be great just so I know what to be looking for.

Thank you :-)

Not seeing anything except the 4.17 H VS2. Unless you are willing to drop the color to I?

The online choices are indeed slim. I would call Jonathan at Good Old Gold and see what he can get for you. The Blue Nile looks the best so far, but that is without much to compare it to. What a fantastic dilemma to have :naughty:

 Wow Stone Cold that BN diamond is HUGE. Personally...and it might be just me. I'd rather have the 4.0 D SI that Explorer linked to. I think 4 carats is big enough and having a D colored 4 carat diamond would be my choice. I'm not sure if I'd be that disappointed in getting a 4.0 carat instead of 4.17 or 5 carat. Either way it's huge... and in those sizes you will notice color.

I remember seeing Widget's HUGE D color Leon three stone. I have an F and I gotta tell ya... a giant D colored diamond is something else.

Huh? That D is going to have serious obstruction problems from the proportions. T 53, CA 36, PA 40?

Since you plan on a Leon setting (great idea!) have you asked Leon about sourcing a diamond? Perry, his diamond guy, is very good and it's well worth asking and seeing what he can come up with. Perry has told me that they have great sourcing options and they are very very good price wise. Then post that info here, and PSers can give some feedback.

Ok so a bit of an updated. I am in Hawaii on holiday and stopped by Cartier. I had the most incredible experience....I tried on a 7.67 D IF pear. I am absolutely speechless it was the most amazing thing ever and omg!!! Anyway it was 1.2million so lets forget that haha!

After that moment of magic, I proceeded to try on some others more around the carat weight I am looking at. I tried on a 4.04 RB E VS1 with baguettes. It was $376,000 roughly. I could not believe the mark up on this stone just for cartier!

Comparing the the 4.04 and the 7.67 next to each other the color difference between the D and the E was so noticeable the E looked yellow, does this mean I am color sensitive or was this just the case because the size difference was so huge? Is the difference guareenteed to be noticeable?

Is it worth going for say a 4.05, D SI1?

Thanks

How did the E color look on its own? Remember you are not wearing your diamond with a D color by its side ;))

It sounds weird that the color difference was soo distinct between the D and E...if the E was the bigger stone maybe, but I am not sure, many factors go into this equation. But in any case, as long as you can make sure that the stone is eye-clean, you can feel good about the SI1. You can find G-VS for your price point as well, which Gs face up pretty white as well - but now I don't know how color sensitive you are appearing to be!

It was odd as the E on its own seemed yellow. Maybe it was the lighting in the store but it just didn't seem to be what I believed to be E colored.
My budget has gone up so I have been told to $150,000. Is it worth going 5 carat SI1 or a really good 4 D?
