Well, I got my glamour shot! Should I start a thread now or wait till I have it in my hot little hands? He said it should be here Sat or Monday. I mean, I wouldn''t wanna tick off Kenny and have a thread with photos here there and all over.

Lol. Pretty and lively blue. Congrats!

Well it''s here. It''s beautiful, but darker than I was expecting. I''m going to keep it as it is still amazingly beautiful...and sparkly. I had no idea sapphires could actually sparkle!

The really bad news is that my camera dock which is mandatory to transfer images is MIA. I just ordered a new one, so it looks like no pictures till later in the week.

Bummer!

How much darker is it IRL compared to the picture?

Oh, I''m sorry! That is such a shame! Do you think its the lighting of real life compared to pictures? I''m glad its still beautiful but I hope you''re not too disappointed!

Well in the light I was looking at it in, I''d say two shades darker. It certainly does not look a medium blue in indoor lighting but a medium dark. However I just carried it into my bathroom and the color is very close. That makes me happy but I think I will need to carry around a lighting source like that.

My guess is it''ll probably look better under natural lighting; most sapphires turn a shade darker indoors.

I''ve wanted to do this before. Not just for stones, but for my skin, hair, makeup, etc.

Sigh.

Ok, camera phone pics. Here it is looking the most like the JW pics.

And here is how it mostly looks.

ETA-It doesn't look this purple indoors.

These pics make me want to go clean my bathroom.

Is that halogen, incandescent or fluorescent lighting?

Halogen...I think.

It is so darn bright! What do you want to do with it?

Stepcutgirl,
I just noticed that your sink stopper isn't down. I'd feel queasy if a loose stone ever drops down the sink drain while trying to take pictures for PS.

Crasru,
I'm pretty sure it's a sink.

God, it will be a disaster. Hopefully you'll read this post before you take more pictures.

Edited.

SCG! Land sakes it''s gorgeous! Are you still leaning towards one of the Sholdts? I don''t think you can go wrong there!

I can''t remember who it was (maybe DianaBanana?) who brought home a gorgeous Leon sapphire ring and was disappointed about its many faces in different lights until she saw the color she was looking for and was reassured here that all sapphires are like this. I know you''re a bit disappointed, but I do thinks its lovely and will look tdf in a Sholdt!

Thanks everyone. The stone is back at rest in its box. I moved it onto my night stand. This is my first "real" sapphire. I have a whole bunch of sapphire jewelry but it is all mall colored opaque blackish stones. I am going to keep it with me and look at it in all lights. It surely does have many "faces" I have noticed that looking down into it in direct light i can see the arrows and it is very lively, looking from an angle it doesn''t have these characteristics at all. I hope once I get my new camera dock I can take good quality pics and post them.

Yes, I am still favoring a Sholdt for this stone. I am going to go see the sample settings the second week of march, i suppose that is actually next week. I was leaning twords the semi bezel Sholdt, but now I''m a little fearful it may darken it more.

I think it''s just YUMMY!! You''re quite good with a cell phone camera! Lovely stone congrats!!

Your sapphire is very pretty & I''m sure it would look amazing in a semi-bezel Sholdt (I love that setting!

)
I don''t know if this helps, but Gene once told me that he ''didn''t think that properly cut stones get any darker in a bezel setting. The light coming out of a stone should all be from what enters the crown, not from below or the sides.'' (N.B. This was in response to my query re whether the (medium toned) stone I was contemplating buying from him would get darker if I bezelled it.)

It''s a beautiful sapphire!

I''m not Gene, but I respectfully disagree with him. Cup your fingers around the stone? Does it get too dark? If so, then a bezel might not be the best option. I''ve seen lots of precision cut gems go very dark in bezels. I''m not saying this one will, and it is difficult to tell from your photographs what the exact tone is. It looks medium tone, but if you think it''s medium dark, or darker, there''s a potential for it to go super dark in a bezel.

Yes, it does look darker even when it is just sitting in the groove between my fingers. Well maybe darker isn''t the right word. You can''t see the detail of the cutting that way. You can''t see arrows, etc. When i hold it up between my fingers, while my finger is still covering a portion of the stone you can see detail and it has a slighter coloring.

Here it is outside. Such a beautiful royal blue! I figure camera phone pics are better than none.

Doesn''t look right, the stone is super sparkly and vivid outside.

My above comments may have been wrong. In my kitchen light yesterday when the stone was resting inbetween my fingers it looked darker and had no detail.

Sitting at my computer desk now, with natural sunlight coming through the window, no matter if I cut it in my hand, put it between my fingers or hold my fingers around it, it looks the same.

Most sapphires tend to go a bit greyer in certain lighting. Whenever I buy a stone, I always ask about the color shift in various lighting. Are you thinking about returning it?

Some colour shift is normal in different lighting conditions. I think what''s most important for you now, is to try to get as much light to the gemstone as possible. So when you''re thinking about setting it, go for something reasonably high (or open at the sides) but please don''t bezel it.

I can''t wait to see what you decide to do!
