Store was Reed''s, salesman looked about 19, nuff said.

Next store was Garibaldi and Bruns that had exactly the ring she was looking for. After she recovered from her sticker shock, I sat her down at her computer and ran a search of emerald cut diamonds. She''s decided to talk her hubby into buying online.

Jeez!! Some people need to learn how to think properly.....

Upon being approached by saleslady in a "maul" store, "is there anything particular you''re looking for?"

My reply, "Yes, do you carry any Hearts & Arrows diamonds?"

"What''s that?"

I said, "You know, an ideal cut diamond that displays a hearts and arrows pattern when viewed with a h&a viewer"

"Must be something new because I''ve worked here for years and haven''t heard of it."

"aggh...I think I''ll keep looking".

this is an ideal cut (showing me a rb) because, it has great depth of 65.3%.
23.gif
well....at least he wasn''t lying,it sure had great depth.

Okay, this is just the greatest thread ever! I can not stop laughing! I wish I had a funny salesperson story to post, but anyone who does keep posting, it''ll keep me entertained during Corporations Law tomorrow!

Well I was pottering around the diamond district in Antwerp a while ago and I wanted to see a selection of eternity rings - the little bitsy ones. So I went into a shop where the lady looked me up and down verrrry slowly and then told me to show her what I ws interested in seeing, from the other side of the window. So I went back out onto the street..... and she ''forgot'' me
23.gif

Left me standing. I poked my head round the door between five and ten mins later. I''d have gone but they had something I really wanted to check out.

The same day - me looking for earring studs, (1.5 tcw mind you!): "Hmmm and what colour and clarity grades do these have?
Him: VVS2, E
Me (thinking that''s odd ''cos they look definitely tinted to me): Really, who says so?
Him: We do
Me: How very convenient for you.
9.gif

Isn''t that the best? I couldn''t help laughing out loud

This conversation overheard while shopping with a good friend looking for a 3 stone emerald cut diamond ring.

Friend: ''I''m looking for your emerald cut diamond rings.''

Salesman:''Do you mean and emerald and diamond ring?''

Friend: ''No I mean emerald shaped diamond, you know rectangular cut.''

SALESMAN PULLS OUT A PRINCESS CUT RING

Friend: ''No, that''s not what I mean, that''s a different look.''

Salesman: ''Oh, well these come rectangular too.''

FRIEND HAS NOW SPOTTED AN EMERALD CUT SOLITAIRE RING AND POINTS AT IT

Friend: ''See, like that one there, see how it''s cut''

Salesman: ''That''s a radiant cut, it''s only an emerald cut when it''s a green stone.''

Went into a local jeweler that has been in business here for a long time and actually got into an argument with them.
The conversation went like this:

Me: I want to see your princess cut diamonds.

Them: Fantastic, let me get the tray.
(Proceeds to pull out emerald cuts)

Me: No, no. Princess cuts. Those are emerald cuts.

Them: You are mistaken. These ARE princess cuts and they are the finest around.

Me: No, THOSE are EMERALD cut diamonds. I want to see PRINCESS cut diamonds.

I then put my hand on the counter and pointed to my princess cut sapphires.

Me: THESE are princess cuts. THOSE are emerald cuts. I want to see diamonds shaped like THESE.

Them: You are wrong. THOSE are emerald cuts. THESE are PRINCESS cuts.

At that point I was boiling mad so I decided to drill them on something else. I asked about their certificates and if they are graded by GIA or equivalent. Their response to me was "Young lady, the ONLY time you EVER ask for a GIA report is if you DON''T trust your jeweler. Its a slap in the face to them."
6.gif
!!!!!

I kindly reminded him that I had just met him for the first time and in that time frame he showed me everything BUT what I had asked to see. I left and I''ve never been back.

How does someone like that stay in business for more than 40 years...that''s what I want to know!

Here is what I got once from a "graduate gemologist":

Salesman: "Here is a 95 pointer, H, VVS1. It has just a little pepper in the middle."
Me: Speachless as I notice the huge piece of carbon about the size of a pinhead directly under the table.
Salesman: "That is a very nice stone. There are only two clarity grades higher."
Me: How much are you asking for this?
Salesman: "$14,200, but we are negotiable."

Big G: Stories like yours... all of these stories, actually...are really sad. I hate to think how many consumers must get taken every day...

Here''s mine. Only a couple of weeks ago I was in a well known estate/antique jewelry store in San Francisco asking about the age of a pair of earrings.

Salesperson: "One easy way to know that they are antique reproductions is that asscher is a new, modern cut."

widget

Couple weekends ago, had a jeweler ask if my g/f''s stone was an F color? And if it was GIA certified? I think she was just mad cuz we didn''t buy a stone from her and my g/f''s RB stone was bigger than the RB stone the jeweler had on her right hand. Have to admit that on her left hand, the jeweler had a monster of a Princess cut.

Last week I went to get a ring reset, and the jeweler toldme he had a great radiant in the 2ct range for a ridiculous price...would I like to see it. Of course, I couldn''t pass up a 2 ct+ stone a a ridiculous price, so he brought out a 2ct radiant in piss yellow, and looked about the size of my 1.25 princess face up, and told me, it''s uncerted, but I''d give it a "G" color, VS1. I didn''t know that "g" colored diamonds were piss yellow, that''s news to me...and since when does a 2 ct radiant look the same size as a 1.25 princess? then he asked me to bring my husband in to see if he''ll "upgrade" my centerstone to this 2ct!

Going price for this 2+ct radiant was $7K...what a deal for a 2 ct G color/VS1 stone. He said it was because it was on consignment.....

my story is not nearly as good as those previously posted, but slightly humorous none the less.
during one of my recent (ongoing
37.gif
) pendant quests at a local jewelry store.......

me: "i''d like to see the solitaire with the pave halo.''

salesperson: "oh yes, this one is very nice" (pulling out bezel set piece)

thanks.

Love this thread! I went into Saks once, asking to see a ring I had seen advertised in a magazine with a square radiant stone. The salesperson said that there was no such thing - that the only square cuts were princess and square emeralds.

A sales lady at Shreve Crump and Low told me if I wanted to go from a G color to a F color in the same carat weight, clarity, cut quality, I would have to pay 40% more!

Oh that''s just terrible!!!

I can''t believe how much some jewelers try and sell stuff for!

When I was looking I fell in love with a 2.33 carat H/VS1 Tycoon. The jeweler (we''ll call them Rock''s) that had it was selling it for over $36,000! I thought that sounded high and asked one of my girlfriends (she used to work in another jewelry store)...I finally called around to other stores that had exclusives w/tycoon. The other 3 stores I talked to (without telling them what Rock''s was selling it for) told me the diamond would run approximately in the mid $20,000''s maybe up to $27,000!!

I called Rock''s to call them out on it, asking why they''d sell a diamond for over 8k more than everyone else was selling it for!?? They seemed totally offended that I would ask other''s opinion and had the OWNER of the place call me back. I asked him why I would buy a diamond that was already priced at a premium for 8k too much?? His only response was that people pay to buy jewelry from them because they''re REPUTABLE AND HONEST!! and then he hung up on me!

When things were better? Wow that is beyond rude.
I went into a maul store in Ttown the other day wanting to buy a friend a quick pre-graudation gift nothing major. The sales girl ignored me. I said exccuse me about 8 times and then finally said "m''am I would like to see this pin could you please show it to me?" her reply "that would be too expensive for you, try Kay''s or McRae''s"
29.gif
No I am not kidding. I get really annoyed when people assume that just becuase I live in jeans and polos that it means I am poor. For goodness sake I carry nice leather purses (coach D&B and fendi) I wear a Brietling and diamond studs daily I am clean kid not shoplifter....GRRRR. That was at Reeds btw. So I went over to Carlye&Co and they have a small display with "perfect diamonds" I see a five stone RB ring and I ask to see it. It''s cute and sparkles so I flip the tag .80tcw and 5700$ 18k wg. That seems a bit high so I politely tell the girl no thank you and she launches into this thing about how they are perfect diamonds becuase they are IF and D...I didnt think so because one of the ones on the end looked a little warmer then the others but I nooded.
Me: What is the cut for these diamonds?
Her: RB
Me: I am sorry I meant the cut not the shape..
Her:
20.gif
and *sighs* Round, they are a circle honey look closer
Me: who certed these?
Her: GIA
Me: Oh they will be able to give you the cut information
Her: I already told you they are round.
Me: Thank you for your time.
And yet BF states flatly that he thinks buying online is not the way to go....

Matadora-
I too have the hardest time being waited on. I'm 25, live in jeans, and am a shoe addict. Lately I wear sneakers, because of a recent spinal surgery. I also carry nice bags, coach, D&B, Prada, etc, wear very little jewelry. I Always leave the house nicely made-up and yet Somehow everyone assumes I'm 17!!!!! And have no money!!!

People are just down right rude to me.
I can't get service any where!
Don't sales people know that if you assume, you just make an ass out of you and me!

I'm going to start a new thread, what's the rudest thing you've ever heard from a salesperson.

I rang a local jeweller to check on what the pavillion and crown angles were on a 'Tolkowsky ideal' diamond he had for sale and that I had seen at his store the previous day.

He wanted to know why I was asking. So I could determine if it was an ideal cut I replied. He refused to tell me on the grounds that I wouldn't understand what the numbers meant, only mathematicians would be able to understand them and that I didn't need to know anyway as I should take his word for it that it was an ideal cut. He got quite rude when I insisted and eventually I put the phone down on him.

I never went back to his store again.

I find it funny that many of these stories are from B&M stores.

I forgot about this one -- I had gone to BB&B to get my 5 stone diamond band that I had bought there resized. I was working at a hospital at the time and went right from work so I had on scrubs and my hair pulled back in a ponytail. At first the staff totally ignored me but I was browsing around so I wasn''t too concerned. After several minutes I went to the saleslady that had sold me the band to begin with and asked her if I could leave my band here for resizing. She took it from me and started looking at it. She said "These diamonds are not set really well and three of them are loose. Where on earth did you buy this?....Actually this looks like a CZ ring, and we can''t resize that." I looked at her straight in the eye and said I had bought that band from her store about 6 months prior and that she was the saleslady that sold it to me. I then said "Are you trying to tell me you sold me a CZ band?!?!" She got really flushed and said she was going to get the manager. I was so p*ssed. He came out and looked at the band and apologized backwards and forwards. He said he would resize the band for free. The really funny part was that there was a couple in there looking at e-rings and when they heard what had happened they said they were leaving and never coming back. Ha!

BTW -- I did take the ring to another jeweler after I took it back to be sure they were real diamonds.

That is probably the best (?worst?) story on this thread so far, Jellybean! I can''t believe that they''d have the nerve to critisize your ring like that! It serves the them right that it was from THEIR store...lol! I''ll bet the sales lady caught heck for that one after you left
36.gif

Was talking to a jeweler when shopping for a setting who informed me that "all diamonds on the market are ideal cut diamonds. If they weren''t, they just wouldn''t be sold anywhere because no one would buy them." What do you say to that?!!

I wandered into a Movado store with fiance in tow to check out their brand of cut (not really my thing, but interesting to see). The salesman was quite interested in selling me (us) an engagement ring, but didn''t seem to notice that I was already wearing one. When I asked to see two of the stones in their settings, an F and a G, I took my own ring off to compare the size and color - I hadn''t been able to put my J next to another color stone before buying it (oh. darn. can''t see the tint of the stone when it''s set...). Completely undeterred, the salesman leans over and tells me that he has LOTS of women coming in and deciding that they HATE their stones and settings once they see the ''brilliance'' that is the Movado diamond. In fact, he''d be more than willing to help me select a new ring.

With my fiance standing right there.

I thought he was going to cry.

I thought that HAD to be one of the most tasteless things possible to say.

Needless to say, my stone, while quite different from those in Movado, certainly wasn''t shabby in comparison. Quite the opposite, in fact. I reassured my fiance of this. With the salesman looking on

I'm sorry but I don't get it. How exactly is this the funniest thing you've ever heard from a jewelry salesperson...

It was funny that he thought that that tactic would ever work. Fu nny that he assumed that any female walking into that store would be so shallow that they would immediately fall under his spell at hearing his spiel about his superior diamonds.

Funny in a guffaw-way? Looking back, yes, to my fiance and me. At the time, no, just plain pathetic.

I tend to feel sorry for the mall salespeople who just plain don't know any better. They learned what they were told and have *no* idea what's really true. I have little pity and even less use for the rudeness and aggressiveness, though.

Gosh, this is a great thread! I have a few to share but not sure how "funny" they are-I guess if you have to laugh because otherwise you would reach across the counter and strangle them, LOL!

1) "We''re looking for approx. 1 carat, square radiant, our budget is around $6,500." "Oh, that is going to be really hard to do since square radiants are SO rare!"
2) "We only have GIA certified diamonds, the others really don''t count."
3) "If you are really lucky maybe he''ll upgrade your stone to this someday!" (Uh, lady? That is an asscher, not a square radiant!)
4) "I don''t use that crap (platinum), it is all just a hype. Its dingy and gets greasy looking and is hard to work with. Any good jeweler will tell you that."
5) "I like pave set" "You mean like this?" (shows me channel set) "No, like PAVE set, you know, like a 3 row or bubble setting of small, round stones?" "You mean round baguettes?"
6) "We have a wonderful, 1.06 carat square radiant here for you to look at." "Okay, that sounds great! Do you know what the ratio is on that (meaning LxW)?" "Yes, its a 1.06."
7) and last but not least "Here are our Radiants." "I like this one, do you know what the cut is on it?" "A RADIANT." "I know, I meant cut class?" "Oh, its a very well-cut R-A-D-I-A-N-T." (she was still determined that I must be a blooming idiot that hadn''t heard "radiant" the first 2 times!

Needless to say, we opted to purchase on the Internet-go Whiteflash and D. Atlas!

We went to a jeweler in search of our new EC. I went up to them on a recommendation of a friend. I told them I wanted a GIA cert''ed stone with a Table and Depth in the 60-ish %iles. What they came back with was EGL certed stones.

Me: "I want to see GIA, not EGLs"
Them: "They''re the exact same thing. EGLs are just as good."
Me: "But I''m asking to see GIA."

Then the diamonds all had Tables and Depths in the 70s %ile.

Me: "I want to see stones with smaller tables/depths."
Them: "Oh, but with larger Tables, you''ll be able to see more of the stone!"
Me: "But it''s an EC, it''ll begin to look like glass."
Them: "It really doesn''t make a difference. It''s the cut of the stone anyway."

HUH????? We left quickly after this conversation...

That reminds me of something else that amazes me. I am surprised at how many jewelry stores sell uncertified diamonds. If you even ask to see a cert, they give you a blank look, or start talking about something else very quickly. The last time I asked to to see the cert on a diamond that I was looking at (one that had obvious inclusions and yellow tint but was well over 1.0 carat) the jeweler told me that they only had certs on diamonds that were valued over 10 grand. I guess in their opinion, those of us who either can''t afford, or don''t want to spend over 10 grand on a diamond don''t deserve a certified diamond?
38.gif

*As the counter filler pulls out a diamond that has so many inclusions it looks like it has the measals and a price tag on it the price of a small country*

Me: "What color and clarity is that particular diamond? *as I examine the infestation of black spots*"

Filler: "Ohh, that doesn''t really matter... you don''t need to know that... look how it sparkles...isn''t it gorgeous??"

Me: *hits my bf on the leg to get up and gives her a death look* "Ummm... if I ask a question, I believe it''s important.."

My clueless bf: "Ohh my goodness... you are sooo rude. I can''t believe you said that too that poor girl"

Me: *gives him a death look and just stormed out of the store* "I can''t handle stupidity!"

Needless to say, I won''t even walk past that store anymore or even dare stepping a foot in it. I get thoroughly disgusted and loose my appetite at how many people get ripped off. It pays to do your homework! My bf is now in training...tee hee He knows better than to take me into another store like that!

Ughh... typos... What I meant to type was MEASLES.... *giggles*

Sorry, still get a little flustered when I think back on the situation!
