What's the max amount of money you'd spend on an impulse jewelry purchase?

Keeping in mind your finances and your wish list/goals. The only rule is that it has to be an 'impulse' purchase, not something you've had on your wishlist for a while. This includes a purchase even if it means delaying / knocking something else off of your list in return; but you're not allowed to "put it on your list and save up for it". Layaway is also allowed.

I think my limit would be $2k, but only for something I really fall in love with, is relatively unique or really well priced.

That big blue-green Tourmaline from Jeff White recently would be my limit, and it was 11.5k USD.

And I do not believe there will be a second time!

Having said that, I am still after a Paraiba cab!

I probably wouldn't spend more than $1,000-$1,500 and I would go for a thin diamond band I don't think eternity just and "normal" band, I had one years ago I really like it but the diamonds were terrible in it as I bought at mall store and I sold it because I hate that the diamonds didn't sparkle much

$2000 for me. I have bought a couple items just under that ( one special pendant, other was a DBTY necklace that I thought was a good deal ). Anything more expensive gets purchased as a birthday or Christmas gift.

It’s hard to say definitively just because an impulse purchase is just that. Impulse. And I don’t know what I’d be willing to spend til in that situation. Depends on how much in love I’ve fallen and how badly just have it lol. So while I can guess what it might be I might be entirely wrong when that moment comes. Best guess would be 10k but again that could go out the window depending. It’s been a challenging few years and I’m feeling vulnerable so money means much less to me than it used to if you kwim

Right now probably $800

I'm not really an impulsive kind of buyer...that's why I miss out on all the good stuff!;(

I once bought my ex husband a Tag Heuer watch which was maybe $3000 (if you consider that jewelry). I would never do anything like that again however. I now don't buy anything impulsively, even less jewelry.

Hi,

My impulse buying would be 1200-1500. I did it once on loop troupe for 1 carat diamond studs. I was very happy with my purchase. I don't do this often.

Can’t go back to edit. I don’t do this often, either! In fact that’s why I was able to do it this time.

An impulse is non reflective or planned so if a purchase limit is a deciding factor, it's not impulsive. Buying something without thinking about the price is an impulse purchase, which I've done only to have the blood drain from my face as reality set in and my brain started screaming WHAT HAVE YOU DONE, GIVE IT BACK, DO NOT LEAVE THE STORE WITH THAT, PRIDE GOETH BEFORE A FALL -- TELL THE CLERK YOU MADE A MISTAKE and I ignored that spike in conscience and kept the 6 figure thingy about which I will confess no further.

What was it?!

No!!! You can’t leave us hanging with “six figure thingy”!

$7000. Regretted and resold and lost $1000, but was relieved to have recouped most of my outlay.

I do much better when I analyze my wishlist to death  Sometimes something unexpected will come along - something that’s not exactly what’s on the list but fulfills the spirit of the #want - no regrets jumping on those opportunities.

But for things that have no wishlist analogue? My satisfaction track record groans for itself.

Thanks @missy . Took the words....

$1k is my comfort zone. My biggest impulse purchase this year was $2600 but wow, so worth it.
There are definitely days I have to consciously curtail my perusal of Instagram, because that’s where most of my impulse buys occur.

Would love to know what it was!

I am very much an impulse shopper and lack patience once I decide I want something.

A self-imposed budget on what I allow myself to spend on a given piece is my only form of discipline. $2k and under is my comfort zone but draw the line at $3K..impulse or not...whether I can afford more or not. Going over the line would open a can of worms and desire for upgrades, etc. (The reality is that I am too fickle and like variety/change too much to invest a lot on one piece).

(In my defense, until my kids were out of college, I didn't have money for fine jewelry/large impulse buys so I've been a bit like a kid in a candy store)

I just realized I don’t do impulse buys if you define them as things that are not on your wish list. If I see something but did not want it before I saw it then I put it on my list. But the new item might jump ahead in priority if it is super awesome.

I actually specifically defined it that way because I too try to be super disciplined and only buy according to a wish list, but sometimes when I see something I just have to have, I buy it. But I wouldn’t spend more than $2k spontaneously, I think.

If we talk about things that I fell in love, added to my list, and then pulled the trigger eschewing all rules (I like to give myself a cooling period); I don’t even want to think about how much I’ve spent :wall:

Hmmm well when I bought my latest diamond ring it was on total impulse and it was just over 2K, so that’s probably my limit. I saw it and was just like “Mine!”

It’s also probably my last impulse purchase for a while.

Right now $1500. I recently made an impulse purchase for $3000 and I don’t regret it at all but I should be smarter with my money.

I've spent 20k on an impulse purchase - and she turned into the most glorious ring in the world - Boadicea the Valiant!

However, I am SO rigid with my "Things to Buy" list - that I ultimately end up selling *all* impulse buys to get back on track with my list. It's genuinely anal retentive.

So now, I look at impulse buys more as a rental kind of thing: I buy something impulsively, get to wear it for 6 months or so, then sell it and recoup most of what I spent, then go back to my list. The thing is, about impulse buys, I never keep them - but I don't really regret them. They're fun while they last - and then back they go, someone gets a good deal on the resale market, and I return to....

25 to 50 :( because it's my husband's wallet not mine sadly lol. So I mostly don't impulse grab at all since I am not very comfortable spending his money on things that aren't basics for living for the 3 of us. But when I do it's typically a small sterling or argentium silver item or something to use in the ultrasonic since we both use it for jewellery and glasses and not super expensive.
