What''s your biggest jewelry regret.

Upgrade options that expire. Those policies are only as good as the business that offered them.

Long before PS, I bought two YG and diamond rings from a big urban J. C. Penney store back when JCP was offering some really upscale gold and nice diamonds, not the junk they have now. Both pieces came with an upgrade / trade-up option. Well, JCP has eliminated the high end jewelry and no longer honors that trade-in. Probably, they'd contracted someone to run the fine jewelry, like Sam's Club does, and that contract expired and now it's under new management.

I bought a diamond from a local business in the town that I used to live in. It could be traded in for an upgrade. That business is now defunct. So is that upgrade option.

That's why I always say only buy a diamond that you can live with forever, or one of high enough color and cut that it will be sought after. Don't "settle" too much, thinking you'll trade it in later. The business you purchased from may not be there in 2 years or 10 years or whenever you decide to upgrade.

HI:

Well too many impulse purchases to recall; but the biggest regret I have was dismantling a ruby and diamond ring my Dad gave me for my 16th BD.

cheers--Sharon

I have a few:

My (now ex) DH gave me a .79ct H/VS1/Ideal cut tiffany-inspired solitaire 6-prong engagement ring from Blue Nile. I then bought their 5-stone wedding band to go with it. After we were married I had a new e-ring setting made because the gap between the two rings was driving me nuts. A crappy jeweler made me a crappy platinum 3-stone band that I justed hated. It cost like $1200. Then I decided I wanted another setting, so I got the Jeff Cooper 3-stone trellis ring that I have now ($2500). then I wanted the matching wedding band ($2000) instead of the Blue Nile one because I thought the stones in the BN band made my center e-ring stone look small. I sold the setting and wedding bands that I didn''t like to a friend for $1500 (losing out on about $1200 spent and obviously spending an additional $4500 on the setting/band changes).

THEN, about a year later I couldn''t stand my center stone anymore (long story, marriage was bad.... so I focused on changing the diamond rather than my life). So then I traded in my center diamond at a B&M and still spent $5000 out of pocket for the 1.0ct diamond I have now.

And now I''m divorced and have rings I still don''t love (I want a single stone solitaire, not a 3-stone due to DSS).

I hope to re-set my diamond someday and maybe making it into a RHR. It doesn''t hold any sentimental feelings to me in any way, since I was the one that essentially bought it.
