Upgrade options that expire. Those policies are only as good as the business that offered them.
Long before PS, I bought two YG and diamond rings from a big urban J. C. Penney store back when JCP was offering some really upscale gold and nice diamonds, not the junk they have now. Both pieces came with an upgrade / trade-up option. Well, JCP has eliminated the high end jewelry and no longer honors that trade-in. Probably, they'd contracted someone to run the fine jewelry, like Sam's Club does, and that contract expired and now it's under new management.
I bought a diamond from a local business in the town that I used to live in. It could be traded in for an upgrade. That business is now defunct. So is that upgrade option.
That's why I always say only buy a diamond that you can live with forever, or one of high enough color and cut that it will be sought after. Don't "settle" too much, thinking you'll trade it in later. The business you purchased from may not be there in 2 years or 10 years or whenever you decide to upgrade.
