Wow, these are some impressive honeymoons!

We are going to the Big Island of Hawaii - splitting our stay between a beach resort (Hapuna Prince) and a bed and breakfast in a rainforest (http://www.volcanoretreat.com/fhale.htm). I''m not sure what I am the most excited about - it may actually be seeing the waterfalls. My fiance'' is definitely the most excited about the volcano. For his sake, I really hope lava will be flowing!

Njc, did you take a tour to do the star gazing or did you drive to the observatory yourself?

Tigerbear - We did everything on our own. I got Hawaii The Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guide book (there is one for every island) and it was like our bible for the whole trip. It has all sorts of great tips for everything from sightseeing to eating and the maps are INCREDIBLE... lots of lesser known things to do and see and very descriptive directions on how to get there.

As for the star gazing, we made sure that we had an SUV and plenty of warm clothes. You read all sorts of things about Saddle Road (the road you must turn off to go up Mauna Kea), but honestly, its not THAT bad. Think of it has a backwoods country road. It is paved and has some sharp turns and dips but that just means you just have to drive slower and more carefully sometimes. You can also run into fog/the clouds which will slow you down. Going up, the 4-wheel drive was a big help as well as coming down (or else you would burn out your breaks).

We saw lots of tour groups up there, but the only advantage I saw to them was not having to drive (but they were driving a lot faster than us... dont know how i would have handled being inside) and they gave you a ski jacket... woohoo... We just snuck the extra blankets out of our room and we were fine! The views during the whole drive were awesome!

We didnt go all the way up to the summit because it was already dark by the time we got up there, but at the visitor center, there are volunteers from the University of Hawaii that set up telescopes and talk about the stars and give you a "tour" of the sky. The closest to a new moon the night is, the less light and the easier it is to see all/more stars.

And as I posted before, my other favorite thing about the Big Island was hiking to Kiholo Bay. It took about an hour to walk one way, but totally worth it and you can swim/eat once you get there and the turtles! They are everywhere!!! Only about 10-15 min from the Hapuna.

YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A BLAST!!!!

We're planning on a Tahitian cruise. I went once with an old boyfriend, but when I was there realized I was with the wrong guy. Broke up with him right after we got home. (I paid my way for that trip) It' s such a magically romantic place that I vowed I would go again some day...with the right person. Good thing I found the right person....and he wants to go there too!
The first time I got married, we spent 6 weeks backpacking all over Europe....2 weeks were spent in Greece...LOVED it!!!! That was in 1984..not sure how it is now, but Santorini was so cool....bopping around the islands on mopeds.

we went to st. thomas in a private rented house for 5 days and then went to the antigua sandals for 5 days and couldn''t have been more disappointed with sandals. we should have stayed in st. thomas the whole time! all the activites we wanted to do (deep sea fishing, snorkeling, horse back riding, jet skiing) were extra and only did one thing that was included (wake boarding). my advice is, stay away from the all inclusive!

We went to Bora Bora. Here's a pic from the pool..ahhh.. too gorgeous. The resort was on a reef facing the main island.
I had originally wanted to visit Italy, but that never happened...maybe for our 5 year anniversary..

sometimes it rained in the morning. still so beautiful...

wow. Petit St Vincent in the Grenadines..IslandDreams..that looks incredible!

Lovey--Petit St Vincent was incredible...Bora Bora looks pretty incredible too. That was actually my top pick, but out of the budget money-wise and time-wise.

NJC,
I agree if anyone goes to hawaii they need that book. My parents moved to the Big Island a few years ago and everytime we visit we use that book. I''ve seen so much there, but there is still so much more to see. We are planning on getting married there at A-bay. Not sure about honeymoon, I really want to go to Tahiti

we got married in Hawaii and thought it would be fun to fly from there to Tahiti (5 hours from Hawaii) rather than stay in Hawaii, since we could always easily come back to Hawaii...and we are so happy we did go try something new. we LOVED it, had a fabulous time, we are dying to go back. We stayed on one island, the smallest more private one and it was so amazing. We were there for a week and it ran about $5k. we hope to go back next year and stay in hawaii for a week and then tahiti for a week again.

there are so many fabulous places to visit!! have fun with the research!
Mara,

We are thinking about doing the same. Where did you get married in Hawaii? We are going to get married on the Big Island (my family lives there now). I would love to go to Tahiti for the honeymoon, since I''ve been to Hawaii lots of times. Where did you stay in Tahiti? Do you recommend it? I really want to stay in one of those rooms over the water

HI Chrisam...

We got married in Kauai and then went to Moorea in Tahiti for our honeymoon. We LOVED it...we are dying to return. The island was perfect for us because it was a quieter island than Bora Bora or the bigger island and we just had a fabulous time. It was very authentic and the people were great, the weather was fabulous, we had a beach hut and would just walk out after breakfast and lay in the sun less than 30 feet from our hut.

We decided not to do the hut over the water because it was more expensive AND it actually is bad for the marine life underneath, the over the water huts are killing off the coral in those areas. And we were really happy with the beach hut because the over the water huts are more isolated and people have to walk down the pier to the beach and stuff, whereas with us we just would walk out of our hut on the beach and could go back and forth for bathroom or to get a new book etc.

We are hoping to go back next year or the year after and do a week in Hawaii and a week in Tahiti again and relive all the great memories and experiences. We just had the best time. I have old threads floating around here if you wanted specifics...hope this helps!!

ETA I dug out my old wedding/honeymoon thread and here it is...there are a few pictures of Tahiti and alot of detail on the trip!!:
