In the spare bedroom
(Writing up my thesis, not doing anything irreputable!)
*chokes on drink* Thanks for that.
Hey! How is Lukah doing? Is he improving? I''ve been hoping you''ve got some good news!Date: 5/8/2008 3:42:08 PM

I work as a software designer for a major corporation designing healthcare software. Most of the time I work from the comfort of my living room
Sorry gwendolyn I only just saw this - it has no upper limit. Guideline minimum is about 90,000 words. My supervisor favours shorter, figures it makes for a more disciplined argument, so I''m aiming for 100,000 and then we''ll edit back.Date: 5/6/2008 3:14:11 PM

By the way, Delster, how long does your thesis have to be? Mine has to be 20,000 words.

What''s your thesis topic?
Awesome! My supervisor loaned me her PhD dissertation which is 300+ pages and probably about a 100K words. YIKES. Not sure I''ll ever do one! Here (at Cam anyway, not sure about elsewhere) it''s usually a 3-year PhD programme and the 2nd year is spent entirely in the field gathering data. Not sure I''ll ever do one--have to see if I survive this master''s degree first.Date: 5/12/2008 12:39:00 PM

It''s my PhD. We don''t do any empirical research or statistical analysis though, if that makes it any better! Just lots and lots of reading and analysing...
Oh really? Yeah, my lawyer friends back home had tons of intense testing and stuff. Not sure of the details, but I know they aged about 10 years in those 3 they spent in law school. For me, this is the first big writing assignment I''ve had to do since my English class freshman year of college (which was a joke so it doesn''t really count). My bachelor''s is in instrumental music education, so I just played an hour-long concert for my ''final exam.'' I think I enjoyed myself a lot more than most folks writing big papers or taking tests.I did have to do some big writing assignments for my law degrees - 15,000 word dissertation on my undergrad, and a 30,000 word one on my masters. But we never had the kind of workload that I think law students have in the States. Apart from those I think I probably had about ten assignments total in the entire five years those degrees took. Now my professional degree was a whole other story...
Aww, thanks, babe! I really love to help kids become more independent, think for themselves, and realize their strengths, which is why I think I ended up in special education. This year has been hard on me--I miss my kidlets! I''ll be very glad to be working with them again in a few months.Your dissertation sounds really interesting! And I have to say, based on your posts on here, I know you have to be just the most wonderful teacher ever

There''s quite a few lawyers and legal-related professionals here! I''m in between - just finished law school, now studying like mad for the bar.
Uhhh yeah! Lol i just finished my 2nd year of law school and this site has become such a huge distraction (but a welcome one)! when I took "breaks" I''d check out new posts and find pics of rings I like, I like to think it helped keep me sane, but I won''t be surprised if my GPA drops a few points lol.Date: 5/14/2008 3:03:26 PM

To those currently working on their masters or phd, I just discovered this site very recently (as i recently have the need to search for ring info.), and i''m sure glad i didn''t know about this site when i was a master''s student.. i can only imagine how much time i would have spent on this instead of my thesis lol... but i''m sure you ladies manage, we do need a break sometimes!
Yeah sometimes I seriously question what was I thinking embarking on this PhD lark. Well I know what I was thinking but that's a long story. Back when I started it I needed to do it, but not so much any more. It's a bit complicated. Anyway it'll never hurt me to have a PhD!
I think the big difference with law degrees over here is they're undergrad degrees. You can't take the bar after a law degree in Ireland, there's another two years of study + training still to go after the BCL/LLB. And of course, undergrad degrees in Arts/Humanities over here are very laid back. The odd essay. Attendance non-compulsory. You're handed a reading list at the start of term and it's pretty much 'do your own thing' after that!Date: 5/12/2008 12:54:14 PM

I will be working at a law firm in Indy all summer & parttime during the year. I just hope it''s all worth it! Anyone wanna help me with my law review application?Date: 5/12/2008 5:13:01 PM

I am a nurse doing 730-730 (sometimes starting in the am, more often the overnight 12 hours)
So i can relate to those who say sometimes its quiet and sometimes they dont sit down (or at least not until about 530am in my case..)! ... but i have NEVER in over 10 years of nursing spent a whole shift on the computer... but i work in acute medicine (switching to surgery in july eek) so there''s always someone vomiting, dying, spiking a nasty fever, etc.
I also teach nursing part time, I generally like talking with new nurse wannabees and think i''m pretty good and at least dont discourage them lol

My first post, yay!...
figures that it would be something job related. That im VERY comfortable talking about, ring shoppping, despite it being REALLY cool, kinda stresses me out lol (i like the ring idea, just not the idea of snooty sales people and especially not haggling for prices.. that''s so not me)
