Hello all!

I came across this forum while searching for loose diamonds and saw all the really good information and helpful replies...thanks for that! I'm hoping maybe y'all can help me. My fiance-to-be is a big fan of the cushion cut in a halo, and in searching, I came across one with these specs:

Carat Weight: 0.79 carat
MM: 5.95X5.00X3.42
Color: F
Clarity: SI2
Cut: Very Good
Depth: 68.3%
Table: 62%
Girdle: MD
Culet: None
Polish: VG
Symmetry: VG
Fluorescence: Faint Blue

This is from the EGL certificate, which says it's a natural diamond.

My question - the cost on this one is just below $900. Most other cushion cuts in this same price range with similar specs are in the .5 - .65 carat range. I've been looking online and if I'm looking right, all of the specs are anywhere from good to excellent. Is there something I'm missing or based on this, does this seem like a really good price? Thank you for your help!

Hi Kuechly and welcome!

The reason this diamond is priced low is because it has an EGL grading report. EGL graded diamonds are routinely priced lower than stones graded by labs such as GIA/AGS and HRD. This is because EGL are said to be less strict on grading than the aforementioned labs, hence the lower price. If you are on a tight budget then I would advise if you wanted to look at EGL graded diamonds, to make sure any sale is contingent on a satisfactory report from an independent appraiser to make sure you are getting what you pay for. As sometimes colour and clarity grades could be lower than stated, the SI2 might in fact grade as an I1 or lower if submitted to GIA or AGS. You would want to make absolutely sure that this diamond is eyeclean and checks out accurately with an appraiser for its assigned colour and clarity grades.

As for how this diamond looks, it's anyone's guess unfortunately. At a minimum you are going to want an ASET image and detailed photographs, we have no way of even knowing what type of cushion cut this is and they vary widely in appearance and performance. I would suggest you take a look at some of the branded cushions that are in house from vendors such as GoodoldGold, Jon has a beautiful range of cushions including his own brand, also check out Whiteflash, Brian Gavin, James Allen and all the other trusted vendors to see what they can come up with.

If you give us an idea of budget for the diamond and the type of cushion cuts you like, we could take a look for you to see what's out there. I hope this helps start you off in the right direction.

Thank you Lorelei! I'd looked at some of those sites as well, and they were pretty consistent in the pricing...which is why this one had me going, hmm.... ;) The closest I think I saw was a .65 carat at Blue Nile that was $930.

My budget on the diamond itself is no more than $1000. I've already got a semi mount that I want to put it in. My girlfriend likes the modern cushion look...at least that's what I think it's called. She saw one locally at a store called Diamonds Direct that had that cut, but it was way overpriced.

Thank you again for the help!

What dimensions is your setting made for?

I would pass based on the report being from EGL.

And I would work with vendors that provide ASETs. Or if you want to work with Blue Nile, their Signature Line cushions has GCAL report and those (hearts and arrows stones) have been ASETing out well (once people get them home, BN doesn't ASET).

Sorry, should have said that. it'll take up to a 5.5 MM x 5.5 MM.

I'm leaning that way, Gypsy. Just seems to good to be true, and y'all have all said the EGL report isn't most likely accurate...you're the experts! :)
