Which type of solitaire won't get caught in everything?

Other than a bezel or halo. My original e-ring is a half bezel and I picked it because it never got caught in anything, but I'm ready for a change.

For my upgrade, I want a more classic solitaire, but I still want to minimize the getting caught in everything factor.

I heard that cathedral or trellis were good options?

Any links or pictures of specific settings would help! I plan on getting a half carat diamond.

do you mean the prongs get caught? I think if the prongs were set correctly it won't get caught. If you mean the "head" of the diamonds getting caught easily, then I really like cathedral shank that goes up almost halfway up the head, but solder onto the head, that way, no thread will get caught inbetween the head and shank ... hope that makes sense.

Yeah, a cathedral would be a better bet IMO- the head doesn't stick out alone all by itself. And as low set as possible. Jewelery that gets stuck on everything under creation is really irritating- that is a good thing to consider, I've definitely bought pieces and then cursed them ever after as I end up yanking threads out of all my clothes.

i think that a cathedral should do the trick as the shank will then come up halfway to the diamond height minimizing the amount of diamond sticking up above the shankd.

The issue with it getting caught on everything comes mostly from the prongs. If this is your main concern, the best bet is to look for the ones which are really rounded off at the top.

I agree with the quality issues that have been mentioned. I've had a 4 prong eternity style setting and 6 prong tiff replica setting and the diamond prongs never 'caught'. I will say for completeness that the eternity band on my 1st ring did catch on almost everything, but the diamond head did not.

So get yourself a good jeweller/maker and you will be fine whatever you choose.

I have the same experience as Steal (perhaps with a different vendor, tho). The pave edges get caught, but never the prongs.

Also, ball prongs are the way to go to minimize catching. I know claw prongs are so delicate and gorgeous (when done right), but the thinness of the claw means that they are more prone to warping away from the diamond, which will increase the probability of getting caught on something.

I have a cathedral-set ring and one of the primary reasons for choosing that setting was so that it wouldn't catch on stuff, and so I'd be able to wear it to work (where I have to wear gloves quite frequently). It has worked well - it does still get a bit caught on latex gloves but it's not a big problem. I have friends at work who have switched to wearing their solitaire ERs on a necklace chain because they kept ripping gloves, but that hasn't happened to me.
