Well, I have had a craptastic week so far. Last night, I was driving on a rural two-lane highway at night in the rain, when my car stalled out. I thought I was out of gas (though it seemed a bit early, and its been years & years since I miscalculated that). Tried to call my DH, no answer. Walked the mile and a half to the gas station. It was AM/PM, which has the most irritating pumps in the universe, and I flailed around filling up the gas can and spilling gas all over myself. Walked back to car. Spent about a half hour studying the horrible and mystifying directions on the gas can "1. Properly attach spout to can." Thanks. Will do that anytime now. Oh wait- you have to break the middle of lid it came with out, and it says NOTHING ABOUT THAT. Gah. Still doesn''t work properly. Flailed around with that for quite a while longer in the dark and the rain, spilling gas merrily. Fun fun. Still no answer on DH''s cell. Finally get most of gas in car, with a liberal puddle in my shoes. Start car. Go 100 feet and die SMACK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD THIS TIME. Crank engine a lot more for the next 15 minutes or so, fail to do anything more than produce an unhappy battery. OK, I admit I might have snivelled a little at this point

. Realize I have no AAA coverage as of a few months ago, since we''ve both had "reliable" cars, and that I''m going to have to pray they let you reinstate it and get towed immediately. Also realize I''m going to have to stand in the rain waiting for tow truck, since the car is in the middle of the road. Awesome.

Luckily, AAA did let me call, get the new account set up and paid for, and get towed immediately. I only had to wait about a half hour thank god. The towtruck driver was totally cool and drove me home after delivering the car a few miles away, which was sooo nice since I was carrying my laptop and it would have gotten soaked. (Really really grateful for that!)

DH''s cellphone happened to break at the exact minute my car did, somehow. Luckily that only took $65 and an hour at the Verizon store to fix, unlike the car. (He felt reeaaalllly bad when his drowned rat of a wife, c''est moi, showed up at 9:30 last night and his phone had been next to him the whole night... but silent.)

Anyway, my ''02 ZX5 Focus is toast. It apparently got wet under the hood at some point, which rusted many important things, including the spark plugs. Timing belt also went. And a number of other issues, with the estimate being $1200 to fix the obvious things, which may or may not be everything that it needs to make it drive again. It was a cheapo with salvage title, and the last year has had a porta-swamp in the passenger side that was not fixable, so we''ve decided to get a new car.

I am feeling rather lost as to what I want. (There''s nothing I''ve really been thinking ''ooh that would be cool'' about; I get very attached to my craptastic cars and hate getting rid of them!) I think our budget is somewhere in the $10-$20K zone, I''d prefer probably $12-13K, and used for sure.

I don''t want an SUV or a crossover thingy. I tend to prefer sporty-ish cars or hatchbacks, and DH definitely would prefer sporty, since he drives my cars quite a bit too. I wish the Mazda Speed 3 was not so new; that''d be fun... a regular 3 hatchback might be OK, but realllllly a lot like the Focus was. The Nissan 350Z is also way too much like the RX8 the DH drives. DH has suggested a BMW M3, which would probably be in the $18K range to get a 2001-2003 with 50K miles. Could be car overkill!

(Another option would be to swap me the RX8, and he could get the new car, but I suspect there''s nothing out there that would make him nearly as happy for $20K or less!)

I hate car shopping! Oh, and I just- like about two weeks ago- got $800 new tires for the wretched car... less than 200 miles on them.

Wait, wait: I have one more gripe. (No, not quite done, sorry!) For now, I''m going to have to learn to drive a stick for real this time (sigh, I know, I''m such a girl) and drive the moldy 2001 Honda we kept for no good reason. Awesome. No radio, the entire dash was ripped apart last time it was broken into, the radio was swiped, and the electrical was shorted out when they tried to steal it, so no dome light either. At least it doesn''t have a porta-swap, just a light coating of mold over the interior. For now everyone will have to laugh at my sorry self rolling backwards down every hill, and burning rubber trying to get up it. Maiden voyage will be tomorrow, to the DMV to renew my license, which I spaced out on and is expired as of the 6th. (I am really embarrassed to admit how nervous I am about driving that thing... I *so* suck at driving a stick.)

OK I feel slightly less sorry for myself now

Good luck wading through all that!

don't worry, those Honda stick are easy to drive. i learn to drive a stick on a big 1969 Dodge Charger with "NO power steering". after a parallel park with that big tank.

Heh. I too had a "no power steering" beast I parallel parked about 2x a day for 4 years (went to college in the middle of Seattle). It was an ''87 Hyundai.

I hope I pick up the Honda''s manual tranmission quickly. I really do rather suck at it though! No joke that I roll down hills backwards still.

I would go for a Mazda 3 hatchback or a VW Rabbit, pry about 2 years old. You beat the initial depreciation and still have warranty remaining - and it should be in your price range. Good luck!

What about a Honda Civic SI? Pretty sporty. About 20k new. Honda Accord Coupe? With the smaller engine might be a little over 20k. Or a couple year old infiniti G35 coupe. Just some suggestions

Are you stuck on a car, or willing to consider a small SUV? You could maybe find a Mazda CX-7 used for 15-17,000.

I have the CX-9 GT (which was over 40,000 new)...but I love, love, love the car so much...and the 7 is just like it, only the baby version. Super nice, comfortable, sport, and roomy. 2 thumbs up for sure.

my corolla and the 09 models are really sporty looking. They''re also not that expensive and get great gas mileage. The back seats are very roomy.

I'd suggest looking at an '06 or so Subaru Legacy GT Limited. Comes in automatic, is within your price range at around $16K, and handles great. You can get it as a wagon or a sedan and and it has good styling in both versions, with leather interior and a giant sunroof. We're looking at getting an '05 wagon (since it has a manual transmission, which we want) for our next car. It's been hailed as a less expensive alternative to the Audi S4, which is a sweet car to drive.

Another thought: what about a VW Golf? The newer ones are pretty awesome.

Nissan Versa, Nissan Versa! It''s a small hatchback - it''s the one that they advertise on commercials right now as being under 10k (but that''s w/o anything other than I think seatbelts, seriously). I love my 2007. It''s versatile, fun to drive, comfortable and reliable. I have the basic one - no frills except for power windows, locks, ac, cd player - you can now get the basic with cruise control, too. The S with power package is about 13k I think, the SL with CVT starts at 16k.

I tried all the hatchbacks in the under 15k mark (and some other cars in that price range) - Toyota Matrix was at the top of my price range used (and dealers wanted a fortune for used ones, though this was before the recession), Pontiac Vibe was basically the same thing as the Matrix but I really didn''t want a Pontiac, I tried the Chevy Cobalt (eh - it was fine but almost identical to what I was driving), used and new Civics, and used VW bug (there''s nooo trunk room in there!), Scions (couldn''t get used to the instrument board in the middle of the dash). The two that I really wanted to drive but they couldn''t even get on the lot was the Yaris (sedan - had just come out or was on its way out) and the Honda Fit (which I finally did see but didn''t test drive since it was an order for another customer - sat really low to the ground and started around 16k).

The Nissan seemed like the most car for the money, and Nissan''s customer service is top notch. Any time you walk near the dealership, they''ll send you a customer satisfaction survey.

A Ford Fusion?

I looove my ''08 Nissan Versa hatchback. It is really roomy inside, gets great gas mileage, and is fun to drive.

I will second the Mazda 3 suggestion!! We have had a Mazda 6 as well as the CX7 and LOVED them both! Highly recommend the Mazdas!

No advice on the car, LittleGreyKitten, but LOTS of sympathy for the night you had yesterday!

After thinking about it, I have a couple more suggestions. I really do think you should look at the 2006 VW GTI--it''s a sweet car and right around your price range at ~15K. Also, check out the Pre-2008 Subaru WRX. You could get an 07 limited for around 18K or an ''06 for around 16K. The Mazda 3 is also not a bad suggestion. Also, check out the ''04 Audi Allroad Quattro. You can pick up one of those for about 15.5K.

If you don''t care too much about the hatchback, maybe look into getting a 2006 Acura TSX. You can pick up an automatic for around 18.5K. Your DH''s M3 BMW suggestion was a good one. You might also want to check out the BMW 3-series. You could pick up an ''05 sedan for 16-19K.

The cars that are going to be in your price range new will be fine commuter cars, but if you want something with good handling that''s fun to drive, I''d go for a used higher-end car.

Awww, so sorry for your horrible day. Have you gone online to look at cars? You could look at Carmax.com to get an idea of what a car would cost that''s a few years old. I will never again buy new...the first 2 years you loose soooo much money. Let someone else take the depreciation hit!

I'll ditto the suggestions for a Subaru - I have an '04 Impreza 2.5RS which has been awesome - totally fun to drive and has never given me any trouble, plus I feel really safe in it when the weather gets bad. The WRX would be even more fun to drive. And the used ones should be really reasonable - I think the value for mine last time I looked was right around your price range $12k-ish, though mine has freakishly low mileage.

My mom has had Subarus in the past too and always had really good experiences.

ETA: that sounds horrendous - so sorry you went through that ordeal last night!

Oooh, definitely some great suggestions I wouldn't have thought of, thanks so much everyone. I typed out a nice long reply twice and each time the wretched ancient beast of a computer here at work has eaten it, so will go for brevity this time and maybe it'll behave and let me post.

I did manage to get myself to work with only killing the Honda once; yay me! (I did cheat and go the super long way with only two lights and no hills though.) Going home will be a bit hairier since it'll be rush hour.

ETA: Definitely going used... new is just not worth it to me, and I can definitely get more car of the money. Not married to the hatchback idea, but I am fond of them... a sedan is OK too though.

I had a Hyundai Tiburon for 3 years and loved it! It''s very sporty looking, gets great gas mileage (I had the 4 cylinder, plenty of power), is a hatchback, and a used one would be well within budget. The only reason I traded it in was to get a mommy-mobile (Hyundai Santa Fe). I hated giving up my 2 door, but it just wasn''t going to work with a car seat in the back!

I''d vote for either another Focus (I have an 2001 and I love it) because the newer ones are much sportier looking or a used Subaru because they are just really nice. Also, I have a friend who has a Mazda 3 and loves it - it lets you drive either as an automatic or as a clutchless manual, which is kind of fun without the hassle of a real manual!

I feel you on the hills with the stick too - Mr.L''s Subaru is a stick and I *hate* driving it anywhere that isn''t completely flat!
