So advice on where to stay? I normally stay in the furit loop but I am open to whereve and wondering what resonably nice places pople are fimalir with. Thanks!
Matatora,

Can''t figure out your meaning really of "furit loop," and as a local, I don''t have substantive feedback to share. I do, though, like this site, which has a very comprehensive list of recommendations, and a sort order that seems to be based on a combination of professional and personal recommendations, so hopefully you''ll find "traveladvisor.com" to be a useful resource.

Best,

Best,
I''m assuming "fruit loop" refers to Dupont Circle?
Although, I never heard it referred to that when I lived there.

I might be in town then visiting some friends, if I am, I''d love to join you all, if possible. I''m back & forth quite often.

Matatora, I was going to PM this since its sort of lengthy, but I didnt know if anyone else wanted hotel info, although, not too much I can offer since I lived there and didnt really have a reason to stay in the hotels. I don''t remember the ones I stayed at when I was visiting schools out there.

St. Gregory Hotel & Suites -- my bf & I stayed here for a weekend. It was nice, both thought it was cute. I liked getting Oreos on my pillow
3.gif
He paid, so I am not sure of the cost, but it must''ve been reasonably priced because it worked on his student budget. I remember the restaurant being ehhh...but there are tons of places in the area. One of my favorites around Dupont is Al Tiramisu, limited menu but all good. Had to throw that in.

Wardman Park Marriott -- where my mom stayed at for my graduation last year. She liked it and I think it was pretty cheap, like only $100 for a basic room. I booked that for her because it was near the metro, near restaurants, the zoo, so near a lot of things but since it was set off of Connecticut, it was a little quieter feeling. Plus I had a friend stay there after recovering from surgery and she was happy with her stay as well. Most of the other times she stayed in Chevy Chase or Bethesda, I''m assuming you want something a little more central?

Now, I think my dad has stayed in nearly every hotel in DC as he travels there about once a month for the past 10 years. I know his favorites are the Willard and one of the Ritzs, but they don''t always put him in those. I know last month he was at a Renaissance hotel and he was fine with that one and earlier this week he was at the Sofitel and he said that was nice. To be honest, I''m not sure of exact locations.

Oh well, don''t know if that helps, but figured I''d throw the names out there. Like Regular Guy said, definitely check out tripadvisor.com they have really helpful information!

Hope no one minds, but after some emails with my PS buddy BuenaGirl I''ve decided that I''m going to travel from NY to join ya all, so Ira count me in!

Thanks, Blue824 for the hotel suggestions. I''m going to do a little online research and will post my findings.....can''t wait to join everyone for some PS fun!

How''d I miss this thread. When I read the thread intro, I thought it was going to be a "handbook" for proposing in D.C.

August 20th - hummmm. I haven''t been to one of the bigger Gem shows in DC.

The Sofitel I stayed at was near the corner of Conn & Florida. I got a rate of about $69.00 from quickbook - but it''s been about 3 years.

I''m hoping to make it, sounds like fun!!!!

This is beginning to look slightly like the convention that has been proposed here...though rather put together from the ground up.

F&I, depending on when you get in, if you can make it, you can maybe catch up with one of your favorite radio personalities we''ve discussed here before (I think Michael Graham''s on weekdays 10 - 12, but you can maybe confirm with this link.

I''ve had minor discussion with Leonid & company re the shirts idea...it may go nowhere. Alternately...I''m still game. I''ll bet if the rest of you ping him directly, he might get a warm feeling about the idea after all.

Isn''t the war expression about cigarettes...smoke ''em if you''ve got em? Likewise, if you''ve got an idealscope or ASET or other such device, you''re encouraged to bring your toys, I''m sure.

Hope you''re all enjoying the summer...just 2 months to go.

Best,

F&I- the Sofitel is now a Churchill (http://www.thechurchillhotel.com/). I used to live right next door. Alternatively, this Jury''s is fairly inexpensive- http://www.jurys-washingtondc-hotels.com/normandyinn_washingtondc and that''s also in Dupont Circle.

Well...perhaps with this post you've done it. But by "ping," I meant "private messaging"...you can do this with anyone by clicking on their avatar, and sending them a message within this Pricescope utility.

Best.

Ira,

Oops...I feel a bit awkward being the one to say...so with this post of yours, Kaleigh, if I haven''t already assumed the job of coordinating, I''ll do so now.

Based on what seems to have been an acceptable original proposal from all the people that I''ve communicated with, I''m going to propose firming this up for Saturday, August 20 from 11 - 3, with a noon lunch. (Obviously, people can (a) come earlier, (b) stay later, and/or (c) ignore this proposed schedule at will).

One person had suggested advancing the start of lunch to 1; another suggested making it Sunday instead. I''ll further suggest that any votes going to a) either of these two options, or b) any other variation, based on maintaining a connection with the Gem Show that weekend, come forward either on this forum, or as a PM to me -- in the next 72 hours. Then on Thursday, I''ll declare (whatever the outcome of that discussion over the next 72 hours) an ostensible done deal...at least insofar as I''d be committed to it, along with anyone else that would like to join me.

OK?

Best,

Ira,
I asked you because you were the one that brought this idea up. And I think it will be great. The reason I ask is because I just found out I have a wedding in Philadelphia on August 20th. If there is any chance it could be on Sunday I am in. There is also a chance I could weasel my way out of the wedding, but don''t know for sure yet. So let me know how it''s looking. Thanks,
Lisa

Let''s still try to come up with a conclusion by Thursday.

So let''s turn the question around...will anyone who had wanted to come have difficulty shifting to Sunday, August 21st, still 11 (when the show starts that day) till 3, lunch at 12 (show ends at 5)?

Thanks for checking, everybody...

Best wishes,

Good morning all. Either Sat or Sun is fine with me, but keep in mind the show starts at 11 on Sunday -- not much time for gem-ing before meeting at noon for lunch.

Just stopping by to say that either day, Sat or Sunday works great for me. Maybe a later lunch, though, like DiamondLil suggested? For me, it''s more about meeting everyone then the gem show, so whatever works for the majority is cool with me.

...so...including others comments, maybe 12:30 lunch and Sunday could work, and stretching the day from 11 - 4 could accommodate requests for more time before and at lunch, both....

Obviously, people can actually arrive and leave as they like, but this would be the basic idea...

Problems?....

I''d like to keep this open for discussion for a couple of days; different requirements may still emerge.

Thanks!

Sunday is much better for me!!!

Sunday is fine for me too.

Sunday is perfect for me.

Sunday works for me!

Hi,

Ira I responded to your PM but I''ll post here that I''m pretty flexible that weekend if I''m able to come out, anything would work.

So far I''m good either day!

Oh I am soo excited about the chance to meet all of ya''ll. Okay now about t-shirts....perhaps if we just choose a single color (blue?) it would be easier....Show of hands how many people would get one?

You may have another idea (blue for all), which could be fine...but I don''t think your proposal solves any problems. In my original proposition about the shirts:

"Each of us would pop for our own shirt, paying Land’s End directly, (once the logo is set up by Leonid), approx $30 (but selecting our own, range is $25 – 50, with logo included)."

If a place like Land''s End is to be used, nothing becomes easier if we all get blue, since we''re all just getting our own in this scenario anyway...not sure even if in the best of circumstances that Leonid wants to start taking shirt sizes, etc. On our own, we can select blue, aquamarine, small, or extra large. The hope/suggestion here is just that, by way of procedures, a logo gets submitted, after which we can order whatever shirt we might want.

Anyway, that was my idea. You may have another one, and/or a better one. Maybe if you spelled out the bigger process/request it would become clearer. Meanwhile, I''ve had the pleasure of putting my idea out there again.

P.S. Oops....the show of hands thing could still be valuable. I would.

Best,

Are you talking about a stitched on logo or a silk screen logo? It might be easier to just have a company silk screen a logo or whatever on white t-shirts.

I''ve never bought a personalized shirt through Land''s End. How does that work? Would one person collect all of the orders and submit one large order along with the logo design? And than Land''s End puts the logo on and sends all of the shirts to one person?

Though I can''t speak to stitched on or silk screen, since it''s not a barBQ, I''m thinking the Gem Show calls less for a tee shirt and more something business casual...maybe something like this....

Probably other outfitters would do the same thing. Having called Land's End, though, the procedure could be simple:

1) Leonid gets them a pattern, that would represent a logo for Pricescope
2) Land's End processes this, and gives it a file number
3) We find out from Leonid what the file number is
4) We (separately, each of us, on our own) call Land's End with the file number, they put the logo on to whatever shirt we choose to select, adding $5 - $8 over whatever the shirt would cost routinely.

Anyway, there are maybe other ways this could be done, and since I haven't actually gotten buy-in from anybody, at this point this really is just a wild hare on my part...but I still like the idea, and I'm guessing if I could start a ground swell, that's partly my intention.

Are you visualizing this?
