Who''s suppose to pay for dresses?

I''ve been a MOH or bridesmaid for 3 different weddings recently. In one wedding, the bride paid for our dresses. In the other 2 weddings, I paid for my own. I think it''s a nice gesture if the bride can afford to pay for the dresses, but it is certainly not expected. I couldn''t afford to pay for the dresses at my wedding, as I was paying for the whole wedding myself.

I am not having a bridal party, but the wedding I was in (MOH) the bride purchased my dress and the wedding I called off, I paid for the MOH and BMs dresses. I wasn''t spending a ton, comparitively speaking, on the wedding, so I was able to do so. But traditionally the bridal party pays for their own clothing.
