Wider Wedding Band?

Will a wedding band that is slightly wider than my engagement ring look unbalanced? My engagement ring is a Stuller Crown setting. The shank is 1.5 mm. I wish I could share a photo with you but it is still being made. The wedding band I’m looking at is from I.D. Jewelry and it is 2 mm. Am I splitting hairs? The reason I feel cautious is because it will be custom made in rose gold and I can’t return it. What do you guys think about this combination of rings? If you think this isn’t a good fit with my e-ring, do you know of a better wedding band that might pair nicely with it? Thanks for your help!

A 1.5mm shank is very thin, so for your wedding band, I would match and get the same 1.5mm. As a percentage, going from 1.5 to 2.0mm is a 33% increase. It's a lot different than going from say 4mm to 5mm. For me, I have never liked plain wedding bands that are thicker than the ring as I prefer the highlight to be the engagement ring.

Just my two cents.

It is all a personal preference and it’s hard to tell until you get them together. Sometimes those measurements vary because of the roundness of the edges.

I know what you are trying to say but the mathematics nerd in me chuckled good, as jumping from 4mm to 5mm is still a 25% increase. But yes, to the naked eye a 1mm difference would be hard to see.

OP, if you are having the wedding band custom made then just have them made to match @ 1.5mm. Seems like an easy fix and no worries.

Yes! I thought that too and was going to use a 7mm to 8mm example but then that band would be super wide and my point wouldn't get across! =)2

I’m not sure the width can be altered? I will ask. They said it is custom because I’m changing the metal and I asked that it be half-eternity. It isn’t custom in the sense that I am designing it or having it designed for me.

I think a wider wedding band looks good with a thinner engagement ring. Here’s a combo I wear sometimes as my set:8747F024-3C8C-4F9C-BD84-5027E02F27F2.jpeg
Coda, this look is beautiful! ❤️

I'd just ask. The change is very simple. If anything, maybe it will reduce the price -- less metal, smaller diamonds, etc.

This is really beautiful! Tell us about the diamond!

Is this a pave band you’re talking about? 1.5mm is really thin for that, I’d stick with the 2mm.

For some reason, the photo of the ring won’t post. I will try and find another... I’m laughing at myself though. My original post must seem so odd without a photo!

I've participated in quite a few forums over the years. This one confused me with pictures too. The most simple way I've found is that for NEW pictures, you simply place your mouse where you want the photo to appear in this little dialogue box where you type a response and then click the blue "Upload a File" button on the bottom. Follow the prompts, select the picture and boom, it should show it.

Once uploaded (and posted), you can then get back to that same picture in the "My Attachments" tab down by the smiley faces -- should you ever need to repost again in a different thread.

Here is a version of the ring in blue topaz, diamonds, and I’m assuming white gold. Mine will be rose gold and diamonds.

Looks beautiful. I take it yours will have the different shapes, etc? If so, perhaps the 2mm wouldn't be as noticeable because you have more movement and things to distract the eye from just two solid bands that is easily noticeable (IMO).

Thanks sledge! :))

My solitaire is 2mm wide, but it is knife-edged, so it appears much thinner. My plain wedding band is a 1.5mm rounded band. I initially tried it with a 2mm band, but it looked a lot wider than my solitaire due to the rounded edge, and I didn’t like the look. I think it’s strictly a personal taste, though. My favorite look is a large diamond on a thin band paired with a dainty wedding band.

Generally I prefer matching widths and one half mm difference will be noticeable because it is overall a good percentage of the total width but having said that until you see it next to each other you won't know for sure if it will be pleasing to the eye. Plus it is personal preference. But usually I find matching widths and heights of rings that will be worn next to each other to be the most pleasing.

Thanks sledge! :))

No worries. By the way, here is a cut & paste of the picture you linked earlier. Thought it might be easier for the folks visiting this thread to see instead of hunting for it. You said the colors was different, but it shows some details.

Also, @House Cat, did you talk to them about making it 1.5mm yet? I still can't believe they couldn't easily do that.

I don’t want to derail this thread too much, but the diamond is 2.566 carat J, SI1 BG Blue.

Wow. Just gorgeous! Would have never guessed a J. I recently bought my girl a BG Blue diamond, H, VS2, 0.867 carat. My biggest concern before pulling the trigger was the H might be too warm; however, others reassured me I'd be okay. Seeing your J really confirms the point. Again, gorgeous!

Mine too. Big rock + small but classic bands = winner in my books.

Thanks, sledge. Truthfully I would have rather a BG Blue that is H colored, but this one came up when I was ready to buy, and I couldn’t pass it up because the price was so good compared to other diamonds with the same specs. Someday I hope to upgrade to an H stone, but I have a feeling that day is far off in the future. You and your future wife will enjoy the stone you got, it is gorgeous.

I think it will be okay but I do think a 1.5mm would be more "well matched". A half mm might not be entirely noticeable but if you wear them together that relative difference will stand out more. I think it's also a function of the thickness of the band, I find different thickness tends to drive me mad more so than the width.

My ER is 1.9mm but knife edged and I pair it with a 2mm band or the Sophia which is about 2mm as well. I would buy a cheap band to look at what widths you like. The one I'm wearing is stainless steel and that helped me decide what width to go for at minimal risk.

Thank you Sledge!!

I.D. Just got back to me and said they wouldn’t be able to reduce the width because the baguettes are too thin and might snap.

Although I adore this band and have for several years, I think a thinner band might be a better idea. I guess for now, I will just go with a thin diamond band. I really want something unique for a wedding band but I just can’t seem to find anything that will work with such a delicate setting. Luckily, this is an upgrade. I have nothing but time. :))

When I went to Tiffany's to buy wedding bands a long time ago, I was planning on getting a knife edge or other thinner bands to go with my engagement ring. When I was trying on various styles and sizes with my now husband, I actually ended up preferring a 4.5mm platinum band because it just looked better with my ER, and the sales associates agreed. You really won't know for sure until you try them on. i wear my band almost 100% of time even through chores and I find it very comfortable.

I have the same setting, just much smaller! I just bought an antique band just shy of 2 mm and I think it looks great! I will take a pic in the daylight tomorrow.

Sorry @House Cat, it sounded like you had your heart set on it.

But I would agree with @blueMA, getting out and trying on bands is probably the best way to find something you know you will like. I've had a real difficult nailing down a setting & band for my girl and then we walked into a Jared's and she was like this is "the one". Crappy quality and overpriced, but it is now an inspiration for a custom piece. My point is much of what she said went out the window when she saw it on her and how it made her feel.

Thank you so much! I would love to see your set!

Thank you blueMA. I know in my heart that I am going to need to try on bands with this ring. This might sound silly but when I started this thread, I was hoping there was some hard and fast rule or a rule of proportions for the rings that could help me do a blind purchase on the internet.

Because of what you’ve said, I won’t rule out a much wider band. I can see how that would be very beautiful.

I do truly love the CVB bands. They are a bit more than I wanted to spend but maybe I should hold out and save a bit longer because they definitely fit the bill of “unique.”

I will still visit some jewelers around town to see what size band I like with my ring once it arrives.
