Will a Platinum ring hide very faint yellow of my J, 3 carat round?

Hello folks,

So my diamond is a round brilliant 3.30 carat, J color, Vs1 EGL. From the top down view, its ICE! Maybe because its truly an Ideal cut (ID, ID). The thing is really white, no complaints. What gets to me is that from the SIDE profile, you can detect a slight yellowish tint.

My question: Once this diamond is set into its platinum ring, which has prongs encompassing it on its 4 corners, can I expect the side profile to look better than it looks when the stone is by itself? Obviously, no one would be able to see the diamond upside-down after it is set. The only concern is the side profile and the faint yellow look. I''m thinking maybe reflection of the ring will play down the tint, etc...

Break it down for me please all. Thanks alot!

if you really want to hide the color then choose a setting that covers the sides.... it won''t matter what metal you put it in

Johan, diamonds usually look whiter when they are set and this may help the look from the side. Is this diamond EGL USA graded? If it truly bothers you then you might have to consider a bezel as this is the only way to hide the sides totally, but if you have a look at the new Leon Mege solitaire, that is in a basket setting similar to mine ( I have an L) and this really improves not only the face up colour but the side also. I know this as I have also had it in a 6 prong and can see the difference. I will post the thread in a sec so you can see this setting. But to let you know there are many here with J's in platinum who LOVE them and they are gorgeous! I will add that thread in a minute too, but you can only get a rough idea from a computer monitor and generally the larger you go with the diamond which you have, the more colour you will see. There is a limit to how much tint can be hidden and this can depend on the accuracy of the grading etc, if it is a true J or nearer a K etc, if the tint bothers you then if you can exchange this diamond then maybe it might be best to go smaller with a GIA report on it. But having a slight tint from the side is normal with a J - it depends on whether you are comfortable with it...

Here you go, J colour in plat https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/j-color-stones-in-platinum.24731/=

A diamond will usually look white, show less of its color if set in a contrasting color. So if you want to hide the color of a J or K color set it in yellow or rose gold. I would not worry if your diamond faces up nicely about what the side looks like. No one will see it. What one sees is the wonderful flash that comes from the top of the diamond. If you stopped 20 women at the mall and asked them to show you their diamond 15 would not have cleaned their diamond in at least a month, and 4 in the last 5 years. Only one would take the time to clean her diamond on a regular basis. Only when a diamond is truly clean will you see it at its finest. Enjoy you J color Ideal cut you have far more than 99.9% of the women in the world.

"Only one would take the time to clean her diamond on a regular basis."

I feel this would not apply to most of us on PS. I cannot imagine!

Whatever ring I'm wearing is cleaned a dozen times a day.....at least!

I feel this also helps with the appearance of diamond body color.

I think keeping it clean is key. It sounds gorgeous, can''t wait to see it once it''s set.

I really don''t think a little color from the side will be a problem. If it''s well-cut and sparkles like made, I doubt people will notice. You might notice it everyday however, LOL! I think the basket idea is a good one to cover the side a little bit, but you don''t need to do anything drastic.

hey thanks all.

This thread makes me feel better. I guess I might be "overestimating" how much of the side profile will be in view. I haven''t seen many diamonds after they are set in their engagement rings (novice boyfriend here). Im sure once the ring is on her finger with the diamond in place, its really the top down view which is the main focus.

I wonder why people dont see the diamond from the side as well as they do from the top. Is it because the diamond sits low to her finger and the side is not in line of sight? For example, is the side profile of the diamond in view only when, say, someone brings her ring finger up to eye level and looks at it directly from the side?

Thanks!

All sides of the ring will be visible. I can even see when mom's diamond has a dirty pavilion from a couple of feet away when in the right lighting.

Maybe a six prong basket?

I dunno - there''s a tacori setting with 8 prongs that I would consider in a heartbeat if I had a K/L/M stone I wanted to "hide" the side color in. It''s gorgeous!! I like naked stones myself, and am designing a ring that leaves a huge open window just to view that nice diamond AND its color!

I agree! I would proudly show the color in a L-M stone. Trying to hide its color would be a shame (and might be hard to do)... Wear it proudly in a setting that shows off the color!

It would also look beautiful in yellow gold...

ETA: J will be plenty white, IMHO. I don't think you'll have anything to hide! But if it really bothers you, I second the Ritani suggestions.
Can't wait to see it!
