Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately, my first attempt at buying a gem resulted in a return because the color wasn't exactly what I was looking for (so, the Winza sapphire from Gemrite will be up for grabs again soon to anyone else who was interested).

I am realizing that it may take a while for me to figure out what I like (especially since examining stones IRL is different from shopping from my computer monitor). I think that I may be attracted to lighter tones that I originally thought. The learning curve is fun. It just requires some patience.

Oh no!! I feel bad for having lobbied so strongly for it. Did the color not match the pictures? Did you take any pictures? How was the cut? and polish? Since it wasn't what you are looking for colorwise can you now say more clearly what you do want in color and / or has it clarified for you perhaps what you don't want? ( Not meaning to imply that you werent clear before, you were, just trying to get more info to file away while keeping an eye out for you). Also you wanted a cushion if I remember right and the round was a compromise. Was it pink with peachiness that you wanted originally? I'm guessing that the winza then was electrically pink and void of peach. The right stone will come, these things take time

Hi VapidLapid,

It's okay don't feel bad. I thank you for your help and everyone elses too. It will just take me some time to figure out what I like. The sapphire was just moodier than I expected. The cut and polish are perfect. John did an excellent job with it (no questions there). It exhibits the most beautiful rich vivid pink in incandescent, halogen, and sunlight. As John describes, it shifts to red when the lighting is indirect. It did exhibit some peachy/amber orange tones on overcast days (someone who is into padparadshas might appreciate that much more than me and that's why I returned it). I coudn't capture anything specific when I tried taking photos though (sorry).

And, yes, I will go with a cushion shape or an elongated rectangular shape afterall. Everyone on PS was right when they told me to wait it out to find the shape I was looking for. I have realized that I want a fairly large gem (for my size 5 ring finger) 6.5x6.5 to 6.5x8.5 so I will have to get a spinel because I can't afford a sapphire of that size unless it is heat treated.

And so the hunt continues!

Oops... forgot to answer your color question:

I've had to scale down my budget to 1000 $ max for the gem, which has changed a lot of my requirements. And makes any trendy or vivid colors out of my price range.

I'm a bit all over the place with the colors that I'd be happy with right now: I'd love a tanzanite colored spinel. And, I like Peter Torraca's purple red spinel but I'm afraid that IRL I might find it dark.

I'm mainly looking for a 6.5x6.5 to 6.5x8.5 cushion in a pink, lilac, or violet color. I just want the color to be vibrant without any gray or brown.

I might end up going with Gemrite's cushion pink spinel because the color looks vibrant and I love the shape! Or, I'll ask the cutters to see what they have but I feel a bit shy about constantly asking cutters for things they don't have or making picky specifications about color.

Thanks again VL!
