Would the size difference be noticeable?

I posted on a previous thread about my previous 5 stone ring here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/let-the-reset-begin.151128/

My orginal 5 stone ring was 2 carats and ranged in size from .45 .41 .41 .36 .36 I really liked the coverage but I will admit at times I thought boy that thing is huge. I almost felt self-concious about it...haha! Now I am just thinking about the new stones that I selected (which are beautiful) I don't have the exact specs but they are all in the .35ish/under .40 range ideal/white. My jeweler said that it will still be a statement piece for sure and from the specs I gave him on my original 5 stone he said the difference would not be very noticeable. My finger size is 4.75 and I have seen several 5 stones on here in the .30+ range that look huge in the picture. I just want to get feed back here because it is hard for me to visualize. I will say again that when I wore the other ring (which in all was 1 1/2 weeks) I loved it's size but did wonder if the lower carat weight would have been just as well. Also there is something in being able to say it's a full 2 carats.. The other thing is the price jump from the under .40 was something to consider. I have the funds however it would then eat away at my new e-ring budget.

Any input would be hugely appreciated!

We'll try to do this for a size comparison: first up, a picture of a 1.50 tcw five stone band by Memoire. I had this ring a couple of weeks and then decided to go for the 2.00 tcw. I'll post that picture next so you can hopefully see the difference.

This is the 2 ctw version - I'll let you be the judge on size difference!

MissGotRocks- So funny I stocked your posts earlier today. I saw you post something about your 5 stone and went to look at your topics, which is why I actually posted this. I do see a slight difference but in your opinion since you have experienced this actual scenario, was it a wow this is so much bigger reaction? What size is your finger? When I look at the picture I see more difference in the size from top to bottom vs. from left to right. Really would love your input on the change. Again my finger is 4.75... So happy you responded!! :appl:

I thought that the 1.50 size was fine and it was. It was my husband and son that kept asking me why I didn't go with the larger size and they actually got the wheels turning in my head again as I had considered it when I placed the order. After a couple of weeks, I called Bill Pearlman to ask if it could be exchanged for the larger size figuring he would say no but when he said yes I just decided to take the plunge and do it. I knew it would be out of the question if I wanted to exchange it a couple of years down the road.

As for the size difference, my biggest fear was that the stones would wrap too far around my finger but they didn't. You are absolutely correct - the size difference seemed to be in the height of the ring rather than the width. Those pictures aren't exactly the same or taken at the same angle either. I will tell you though that while I think I could have been forever happy with the 1.50, I've never regretted the jump. There is no DSS going on with that ring. It is very well made and I've enjoyed wearing it everyday since I've had it and I really never feel like it's too big. As I told someone in another post, I like the size balance that it gives me with my ering and that balance and symmetry piece is very important to me. I know some others have two rings that are completely different or have a smaller ering with a larger RHR and are very happy with those combos. It's just the very anal part of my personality that feels they should 'match'.

The five stone band is a 5.5 whereas my ering and wedding band are size 5.

In my opinion, unless you saw both of these rings side by side, you'd really never notice the size difference. It was somewhat noticeable to me and because I had thought about getting the 2 ct. ring first, I was glad they talked me into doing it. Otherwise, I may have always wondered if I should have gotten the bigger one. Now I know!

It's funny you should mention the e-ring/rhr balance because one of the first things my husband said when I got the other ring was how it overwhelmed my e-ring. That didn't bother me though. Well I think with my finger size and seeing visually the two pictures I should be fine going down a bit. My jeweler and I discussed so much and I wish I had taken notes, but I do recall him saying it would be around 1.8 ctw.I just can't remember. I have been that crazy customer who calls a ton, so I don't want to bother him again until he gets back with the designs. I just don't want to regret going down in size. I do think it could really be more of a mind size issue verses an eye size. With the first ring I didn't get a chance to really wear it because of the problems and sending it back.
The hard part is my motivation with this project. With the first ring it was all about 1 ring only but now it is me trying to finally get the much needed upgrade on my e-ring as well as my anniversary present. I can do this comfortably if I stick to these stones but if I move up it will sacrafice my e-ring. I am not sure I want that or that it is worth it especially if this ring be just as blingy. Does that make sense.

Another thing is I have a toddler and a preschooler plus a teenager. I am always running around be "mom" that I need a ring that works with my life right now...

It makes perfect sense. I truly don't think you'd notice that much of a size difference and if it meant derailing the other project, I'd stay with the smaller size!

Good luck - let us know how it goes!

That's very interesting to read!
I'm thinking of getting my mum a 5-stone for her next birthday, so I'm making good use of your review and pics MGR - she is also a 5.5 I believe - the difference in size looks quite striking to me from your pictures!

I made MGR's pics smaller and put them side by side so they were easier to compare 8) Something to take into account is that I personally find that when stones have darkened in the sun, like in the pic on the right, they looks smaller than when they are showing real brightness as in the pic on the left. So I am betting the size difference in real life is even more noticable when the lighting is the same compared to when it is different as in the pics.

Both are awesome. For me, I like the "smaller" size stones because it looks just a weensy bit less formal/flashy and I think it would work well for everyday wear. The larger size might be a little too attention grabbing for *me* and my lifestyle. I think the smaller one is a great everyday running around with kids ring!

Yissie, I have been meaning to post on your post with your wedding pictures.. so beautiful! I have always wanted attended a Hindu wedding ceremony. I have seen them on tv and just stare in awe of all the amazing detail and fun that goes into it. Congratulations!

After re-reading my post I wanted to clarify my response about MGR's beautiful ring, I don't want to seem as if I downgraded the size difference. I too see a difference and I saw it right away. It wasn't that the difference in size was "slight" as in the overall appearance because it is not but where my eyes gravitaed and saw the jump was in the width of the stones from top to bottom vs. a huge difference from left to right. Now when I had my ring, I think I looked more at the left to right coverage and the side profile (u-prong side), so that is what I was responding too. Sorry MGR if my response seemed slighted because that wasn't my intention and I wanted to clarifying just in case it did... =)
I do agree that I probably will not notice it especially since the ring has been out of my hands (still kind of sad :( ) for a while and when I did have it it was for a short time. When I get this ring my new e-ring setting will soon follow it and I have wanted to upgrade it for so long....hehe!! Yikes but with thinking about the width my fingers are long, the loss of width might just matter!!! Okay I can't do this, I will drive myself batty! I know this is all going to work out, I just obsess about things because I want it to be perfect and I need it to satisfy my jewelery cravings for the next 5 years!!! :Up_to_something:

Thank you for doing this. I see what you are saying about the lighting and I noticed that the two pictures were different. Ahh.. "flashy" was a word I could have used for my other ring, it definitely was.. I will say as I was wearing my previous ring I worried a lot about it. I was having problems with the setting so that factored in to it but it also made me feeling like maybe I needed to babysit it and I didn't want to hurt the diamonds in anyway. The "smaller" (I liked your quotes, because in reality these aren't small for a 5 stone) stones will maybe save me that anxiety.

Oh, thank you m2nk :))

I'm not MGR but I can't imagine she'll take any offense. And as to satisfying your jewellery needs for the next five years.. that's what we all say pre-purchase ;))

Thanks DreamerD for making those side by side - much easier to compare although the pictures are not exactly identical. Good point about the sun darkened ones - it probably does make a difference.

No worries - I'm not easily offended and just thought in this case you might be able to see something about the size difference. This all happened several years ago so I'm working from memory but I had not seen the 2 ct. in person. It wasn't so much about choosing a difference in 'looks' as it was that carat weight thing so probably more of a mind issue than an appearance issue.

It's funny how the eyes get accustomed to what they are looking at - I truly do appreciate the bling I get from that ring everyday but don't really think about it as being big. It was the one purchase that I never looked to upgrade again and probably never will. I had a three row princess stone invisible set ring that I traded in on that ring. The first was my 25th anniversary ring and it had issues because of the invisible set and by the time this purchase occurred, I was at my 30th anniversary so it's sort of a combo of the two anniversaries.

Hubby just increased my budget.. :appl: Hehe!! He is giving me $1000 more to use on my two projects, so I will be going back to the jeweler on Monday to look over my 5 stone selection and he is also pulling a few more stones. Now when I go in I won't feel like I have to sacrafice 1 project over another. He confirmed the 5 stones that I selected were 1.85 which really is not that far off from 2 carats. So it may just be replacing the middle stone with a slightly larger or I just might leave them as is. It's weird how now that I have the option to go bigger I don't feel as stressed about staying with the smaller.. why is that!!

That's good news! We'll be waiting to hear what you decide!

I think the tighter budget made you put everything else that comes along with the ring in perspective! Now with the bigger budget your mind is free to decide using the determining factors that are really important to you... :wink2:

I met with the jeweler today and I decided to continue with my original selection which actually totals 1.75 carats. It would have been $400 dollars (not much, I know) more to increase the ring to a total of 2 carats (replacing the middle stones with .45 and 2 x .40's). Although I could see a noticeable difference in the size of the new middle stones (they were beautys), I just didn't think once the whole ring was put together I would miss out with my orginal selection. This decision is also now allowing me to use the extra $$ for a matching wedding band for my reset upgrade. I have two wedding bands with my current e-ring but my new upgrade is a much heftier (still delicate though) look and these may be overwhelmed. I think overall this will be a much better decision.. What do you think?

I think it's awesome, congratulations! Let us know how everything turns out with the ring and the following upgrades!! :loopy:

Thank you Mark. I am a not very good at making decisions and I tend to second guess myself. Even after I left on Monday, I was wondering if I had made the right decision. I just had to 1) remember that although I loved my previous 5 stone, it was very blingy and made me just a tad (very small tad!!) self-concious. I thought I could have gone down in size and 2) I keep looking at kcoursolle''s ring which is so beautiful and is slightly smaller with .31 stones.

I also think not having the ring makes it harder and once it is in my hands I will not look back..

The wait is torture. I am waiting for CAD's for both rings and I want to call my jeweler everyday to find out the progress. I saw him on Monday and have been good in not calling although it is Thursday... :naughty: :Up_to_something: I will for sure be back with updates.. Thank you!
