Would you set a 3.5mm stone?

And if so, how? I just received this color change garnet from the gem trader and I really love the color change. It goes from a blueish purple to a blueish green. It's just that it seems so tiny but I really want to wear it. The actual color is somewhat darker but the green is much much nicer in person.

In your photo (Brad's, I assume), Kismet, I like the blue/purple color, so if the green is as good IRL as you say, no wonder you want to wear it.

What about as a stacker? Or, do you wear pinky rings? (I do & love them.) That size would work well for one -- I have a square-cut ruby about that size in a pinky ring & wear it every day. I'm interested to see what ideas others might have.

Nose stud!

Yes, set it! I love tiny stones in delicate settings.

In a small bezel on a 1.2mm round band, very simply. Or, if you like, as a tiny pendant, on a thin gold chain.

Well, I want to be able to look at it and that would give me a squint.

I don't really wear pinky rings. I'm always afraid they'll slip off for some reason. Stackers are a possibility but then I'd have to set all my teeny stones (3.5mm bixbite & 3-4mm light pink diamond).

It would make it harder to look at yourself, but I can picture it in a DBTY style bezel solitaire necklace... I saw on the Tiffany website that there is also a ring in that style, using a chain as the shank of the ring... not sure how sturdy it would be, but it definitely lends itself to a delicate look for a small stone!

I'd set it in a stacker or as part of a multi stone ring. If you have petite fingers, it may be more appropriate to set it as a solitaire. I have huge hands, so I can't.

I am sorry but I would only set it as a surprise stone in a ring or part of a multi- gem pendant. The smallest stone I will set in a ring is a 7x5 oval or a 6.5 round, and even then I am surrounding them in diamonds to make the gem appear more substantial. With that said I really love your CC garnet. I have seen too many that are too dark and yours does not appear to be that.

If you wanted a delicate ring that still makes a statement, I would set it in a scatter diamond setting, with the garnet in the middle. Kind of like this, but arranged so that the garnet is showcased better. I think I would do just the top 2 bands, and have the garnet replace the biggest diamond in the middle, and put in 4 small diamonds like in the picture (without the bottom band.)

I would not bezel it because it need light from everywhere to change quickly, easily and more fully. I'd do either a multi stone ring or have it as a surprise stone in a ring.

That's gorgeous! You must set it! A couple of halos?

Very pretty, I guess when you inlay in a ring, it would very charming. :D

It will need maximum light to perform, so my vote is prongs if you set it, but its so little! It makes me think that it will need companions, like stacking rings.

Double halo was the first thought that crossed my mind.

Yes, I'm pretty sure prongs would be the way to go, but who to go to to make prongs that would be so teeny?

I was also thinking something like http://www.thirdfloorantiques.com/items/855313/item855313store.html but I would need a few more small companions.

Prong settings for that size aren't uncommon - I think a pair of 0.33 tcw diamond studs are about that size. Some larger halos (not pave) also have multiple settings in that size.

Ooh, a double halo would look good too!

Also wanted to add that I can't wait for you to do something with it - everything you do becomes my favorite! I expect this to be no exception! :))

Do you wear small rings or do you like big whoppers?

If you like big whoppers how about make a metal flower and insert this gem at the centre of it to give it size/finger coverage? I've literally just finished making a copper flower ring and inset a stone into the centre. I'll take some photos and upload tomorrow if you're interested.

Most of my rings tend to be on the large side but I do wear some smaller ones.

I'd love to see pictures of that ring!

Awww! Now you got my hopes up for a double halo :blackeye:

Ok Kismet but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remember that this is my first ever attempt at making a ring (and a copper ring at that)! In the hands of an experienced jeweller you could have something made with a similar idea where your stone is the centre piece but to keep costs down is surrounded by decorative metal.

Here you go ............ oh sorry this photo is huge and I can't seem to resize it! :(sad

I tried to look for stacker rings with ~3 mm stones with prongs, to address the color change, and found mostly bezel settings.

How about this? It has prongs, your stone would be the center of attention, and it would not block light as much as a halo. I would want this with a plain, thinner shank, but I tend to go light on the bling. It's from Greenlake:

That's awesome, LD! Yes, it's a first effort, but I can totally see where you're going with it. Plus you did a great job setting the stone.

Thank you Kismet. My friend saw it yesterday and said that if I'd told her it was an old Saxon ring that had just been dug up, she would have believed me. You can take that either way but I actually thought it was quite enchanting and liked the rustic description! lol

I love LD's flower ring! The one I posted from Sally would have a similar effect of big finger coverage with a small stone (but of course in a completely different style). Not sure if that's your style, but take a peek if you haven't already.

Awwww thank you Jstar. BTW I love Sally's twisted rope effect. At some point I'm going to ask her to do something for me using that. It's really lovely. Thank you for reminding me about it.

No problem! I need to get a Bella ring some day. I have an Iolani, which has the same twisted rope effect, but I've just fallen in love with the Bella design. I just would rather source my own stone for it.

It's quite pretty but I don't think I'd like it as a ring. For me, the Bella seems more like a pendant or earring design.

LD's ring made me think of doing something like this but I think it may end up being too expensive. 3-3.5mm diamonds are in the 10 to 12 points range, right?
