So I have always loved blue sapphires, ( my birthstone) but am now looking for one in a different color. I am leaning toward a deep pink or red. I would like to make a RHR with a halo, possibly just around the stone itself... could I usewhite princess sapph''s for that? they are here: http://www.simplysapphires.com/cgi-bin/hazel.cgi?action=serve&item=whiteprns3.html
and the pink sapph is here: http://www.simplysapphires.com/cgi-bin/hazel.cgi?action=serve&item=pinkem71.html

Any advice would be great!
Or should I make it into a pendant?

I am not sure where to start... lets' see:

- using the white sapphires (assuming you like their look, which is another Q. these don't look like diamonds if that matters), you may save some of the cost of stones, but the setting will need to be made custom and that will likely tip the balance otherwise.

- the square white sapphires are 3mm and the other 5.4 x.4.4 - that makes the side-stones comparable in size with the pink... not the usual look of 'halo' settings shown around here. Since there will be some metal in there too (princess cuts needed some sort of channel), the contour will end up HUGE relative to the small pink sapphire. And the hole thing heavy and expensive.

The easy way to get a halo setting done is probably a ready-made setting and a whiff of small diamonds. That idea still has a catch - the sapphire will need to fit in rather strictly to the pre-made setting. I would expect this to be less expensive than custom made and at least some look great, esp. gold ones. This is not just a matter of cost, but I get the feeling that platinum copes worse with the hasty production and finish of ready-made settings (help wanted about this!). My experience with these jewelry spare parts is very limited though and there might be beautiful exceptions to this rule.

So... I'd ask first about the cost of different versions for settings, just in case this limits the choice of stones in some way (size, shape etc.).

Just my 0.2 of course.

These are small sapphire pendants by Carl Blackburn at Pearmnas'. Somehow they rung the bell with your post.

There are allot of them on the list (HERE) from $500 to about $1500 or so. The settings inspire a strong 'deja vu' effect - someone on Pricescope must have got one already.

How about THIS SETTING ? Perhaps some are available for little custom projects too...

I just had to throw this in, because I know very little about colored stones other than this: there are no red sapphires...those are called rubies.

I love Ana''s suggestions for pendants, particularly the first one on the left!

ooh, those are very nice!
I guess I am feeling like I need to spoil myself since all I feel like I do is make sacrifices around here....I think I may go with a pendant, I don''t have many necklaces... I haven''t always been one to change accessories often, but darn it, I think it is time to start!! :)

The "red" I Was talking about is like this: http://www.simplysapphires.com/cgi-bin/hazel.cgi?action=serve&item=padc203.html, so I guess it in not called a red sapphire it is " Ceylon Padparadcsha Sapphire-2.03 Cts-7.3x6.1mm... I had a ruby when I was little, but it was stolen....
