A pear also tends to elongate the finger, and they have very good face-up size for their carat weight (assuming they are not cut too deep.)

This I did not know. Thanks.

Stunning, Niel!!

After taking a few weeks off PS and off the search I'm finally feeling a but more back to myself. The obligations and family voices etc became a bit deafening and zapped our enthusiasm so it's good to be excited again. One stunning grey spinel is the reason I snapped out of my sort of funk over it all. My FF was totally ready to say lets do it and buy it and we got really close but in a quiet moment with the grey spinel, I became very clear headed on what I actually want! :loopy: I know I sound all over the place, just an update is all....

Updated vision: oval 1-2 carat diamond in the J/K color range, double (or single?) halo with a split shank.

Mandatories:
  • Prefer creamier yellow warm tones, so K is as good as J (yup I'm weird :naughty:)
  • prefer a longer less round oval
  • trying to start judging not by stats but by what I am attracted to--e.g I don't mind imperfections as much as I thought I might
  • Must have solid finger coverage but still feel delicate
  • Want smaller melee if possible and an airline if its a double halo.
  • Budget total for stone + setting is $10k
  • Prefer a lower setting that isn't likely to snag on things
  • Do not care for pave band. Prefer a plain band. Comfort fit.
  • love this PSer's ring

It's awesome that you are very sure on what you want now, which should make the hunt go quicker and smoother. As much as many of us would love to help you, Rocky Talky is the best place for this with more diamond expertise in that forum section. I would start a new thread there and I'm sure some of us will follow you there as well. Good luck with the new e-ring search.

also wondering if there is any specific word for this type of cut? I love the pattern in it.

I think that's known as a scissor cut stone.

Modified radiant? It looks like a step crown which radiants generally do not have but the pavilion reminds me of a radiant. Just my guess because I haven't a clue. :cheeky:

Yes please start a RT thread this sounds like a very fun search! Side note, will you do it in gold or rose gold? That would be so darn flattering!

So I looked at at James Allen. None of them really look that good.

This would put you at the top of your budget but would be beautiful in a temporary solitaire for a few years
May very well not be eye clean. But I'd ask them for info.

They also have a few other 2+ k, l stones. So I'd ask the sales rep if they had any good ones.

Otherwise I'd ask DBL to source you one. They are good st these colors.

Yes, I guess that's the correct name. I have a similar cut stone, and the precision lapidary I purchased it from called it a "scissors cut."

If you are going for an oval, did you see the other thread about ovals that are cut so they do not have a bow tie?

The issue with a pear though is that the color is often not distributed well between the narrow part, which if often light because it is shallow, and the round part that can have a bow tie. Hence, I like pears with fluorescence or silk to even out the color. Thread jack over.

i did indeed! Gary was super helpful. I'm actually not super afraid of bowties, as long as theyre softer grey!

I've posted in RockyTalk and hope they'll be as helpful there as everyone's been here! I'm a little ambivalent to think of myself as seeking a clear stone but I guess a warmer colored clear is still clear! :)
