Regarding "Native cut" stones, please don't underestimate the tech that is available in places like Thailand and Sri Lanka. Many of the yellows that come out of Sri Lanka these days show exceptional precision cutting.

This!!! I was browsing gems the other day, mostly from Asia and was thinking how beautifully cut they were!!!

Honestly I could have sworn that maybe even 5 years ago the cuts from Asia were pretty haphazard but the other day it struck me that 90% of the stones I was browsing were beautifully cut into very fancy shapes (haha I need something in a scissor cut, I really do!).

You’re right, there have been a lot of changes in just a few years! Moreover, yellow sapphires are plentiful but not popular in most markets except for perhaps India. So, not only do they need to “dress it up” with good cutting, doing so is still cost-effective.

When it comes to Blue sapphire and ruby however, the rough is so expensive that the will do anything and everything to maximize yield - hence the wonky cutting you see in many such stones even today.

Personally, I don’t mind wonky if the cutting is effective and otherwise beautiful.

But windows…Personally, I just can’t deal with them. i like faceted gems for their play-of-light and cabochons for their glow. Windows are, to me, neither of these.

But that’s just my 2 cents

I guess it was me who first used the term "native cut" in this thread and I just want to clarify that I absolutely meant zero disrespect with that term. Only once joining PS did I learn of all the "precision cut" stones and how it is so important to many here. I grew up (in the gem world) in the age where color was king, cut so much lower on the priority list. I still feel this way for myself, actually. That's not to say I don't absolutely love my precision cut stones by renowned artists, however I personally choose to be much more forgiving for an imperfect cut.

Am I being viewed as a trade member here? I now see the flag by my name, but I’m not sure how I received such status,

I wrote PS admin for clarification several days ago about this but didn’t hear back.

I did make an attempt to enter the trade last year but abandoned the venture and never opened up shop.

So I straddled the fence for a hot second, but don’t believe I crossed over. Please correct me if I am wrong in how I am viewing this.

Thus far, I have been making jewelry as a hobby (for myself and friends) and buying stones for personal use and have never made a dime from doing so.

As far as I know, I am not a vendor any more than other members who have privately bought stones, made or bought jewelry and then sold it after some time (and at a loss).

I have paid a lot of money to a lot of vendors. I am definitely their customer. I cannot fathom how I am a competitor.

I have however had enough exposure to the trade that I feel confident when I see a vendor charging well-above fair market prices - and feel a bit protective over consumers who may not have much experience and thereby be taken advantage of.

In any case, I have never had a “customer” beyond my personal friends for whom I help make jewelry and passed it in either at cost or as gifts.

I am not sure if any other trade member out there who gives away all of his time , effort, ecperience and often money without ever making a dime of income.

So, please clarify. Am I a trade member? If so, can you please clarify the criteria for determining this?

I am happy to abide by whatever rules are appropriate. I would just like to be enlightened a bit here.

Oh! No disrespect was taken here! And I still prefer the character & play-of-light that accompanies traditional hand cutting (provided the cutter is skilled and has a good eye) to the ultra-high precision cutting in most cases as well.

It is lighter than I ideally want, and I am wondering if the color will be brought out further by a cushion cut... I am so nervous that after months of waiting I'll end up with a sapphire that isn't perfect to me. This whole business is ending up a lot more confusing than I thought and I am so appreciative for any thoughts y'all have given me.

Currently considering either ordering from this from Natural Sapphires (possibly too small at 7.7) or Gemfix (looks faint in color) before jumping into a custom cut. Leaning towards Gemfix but I just know I'm gonna be kicking myself when it looks exactly like the photo and it disappears on my finger

Be patient. Wait until the right stone comes. If you’re nervous now and feel something is not right in your gut, it will bug you forever. You are creating an important symbol. Take lots of time to look at lots of stones and simply wait for the one that “feels” right.

You may also want to contact Manit at Carats & Grams in Bangkok. He is very kind, honest, fair, helpful and is quite strict about quality.

Also, there are so many Yellow sapphires in the Silom Gem markets in Bangkok that it would literally make your head spin. Manit may be able to track something down for you.

Have you ever considered visiting the Thai gem markets in person? It’s quite an experience! I would definitely recommend an experienced escort however!

In general, when windows are closed on a colored stone, they do become significantly darker.

Jeff White is one of the most experienced cutters out there, so he could probably give you better insight.

Hello beautiful people. I have been looking for a yellow sapphire so that I can FINALLY get engaged to my partner of 8 years! I have now reached out to 3 jewelers in my area and looked at the recommended seller list to no avail, so after months of searching, I am now looking for advice.

What I'm looking for:
-natural sapphire
-yellow or greenish yellow
-7-8mm
-square cushion
-eye clean
-light or light/medium. not too saturated but not so pale it appears colorless on the finger!
-budget $5000 for the right stone

Here is what I picture:



So far I have found this at Africagems but I do wish it was somewhat paler or cooler, though I have reached out for more info in case it looks paler on the finger!



I also tried this stone in person, which was perfect in every way but looked too colorless on the finger:



Some questions I have:

-Any places you recommend for sourcing yellow sapphires or similar?
-Do sapphires generally lose color on the finger compared to photos?
-Would you recommend sourcing through a jeweler for insurance/guarantee/repair reasons?
-Are my standards way too high or unrealistic???

Might have found the one!! dying for opinions on this yellow sapphire from Jeff White I'm planning to have cut into a cushion... Just a little sleepy but the color is exactly as I wanted! Thoughts on the haze, does it add to it or detract? thanks so much for everyones thoughtful guidance throughout this

Personally I don’t like silky yellow sapphires. I like silky blue sapphires though.

Also find the color for this one a bit too muted. But then it’s all personal preference anyway so if you like it, then pls go for it.

I would also suggest mulling over whether a silky stone is what you really want for a significant piece of jewelry like an engagement ring, especially if you haven’t bought a silky stone before.

I do think silky stones have their own appeal and have several, including a sapphire, but there are times where I want sparkling and scintillating and I’m not sure this sapphire will do that. Then again, if Jeff thinks he can deliver a good recut, then I would trust his judgement!

Admittedly the colour is basically identical to your inspiration picture you initially posted. A recut is a good idea to fix that window. And regarding the sleepiness, it's all about what you see. Different people will have different preferences and if you love it sleepy, then get it. Will you regret it down the line if it isn't more sparkly? If not, then I agree, you seem to have found the one.

I LOOOOVE Jeff’s work! But I too am hesitant about the haziness. I really like it when yellow sapphire pops!

I will be more comfortable with slight silk for strongly saturated yellow sapphire. When it comes to paler colour, I think brilliance comes first. Just my preference
