12+ Carat Thai Ruby

Hi,

I recently inherited a 12+ Carat Thai Ruby, and was trying to find out the value. It has an AGL Certificate that says natural with heat treatment, LI1 Clarity. I cant seem to find any comparables on line.

Colour also sets the price. Do you have any pictures? It sounds like you need the services of an experienced and independent coloured gemstone appraiser.

Michael, the reason you won''t see many Thai rubies for sale online is that they are no longer being mined. They enjoyed a brief heyday in the 1960''s and 70''s, between the time that Ne Win took power in Burma and halted the export of rubies from Mogok, and the discovery of the huge ruby reposits in Mong Hsu in the 1980''s.

The rubies from Chanthaburi and Trat provinces in Thailand tend to be a dark garnety red, caused by an excess of iron. Unlike the Burmese rubies, they have no silk, so they don''t have that slightly sleepy appearance of the Burmese stones which tends to diffuse the color and prevents extinction.

Many of the Thai rubies have excellent transparency, and a piece over 10 carats could be worth quite a bit if the color is not too dark. Once in a while I''ve seen gem dealers in Chanthaburi pull their private collection from their safe and many of them have Thai rubies of impressive size. But I never see them offered for sale here.

Thanks for the information, On the AGL certificate it just says red for color. I attatched the photo that was on the certificate also. Is there any way to find out a rough price comparison.

Your picture is rather dark, therefore not allowing the true colour to be seen. As it is, it appears to have a good bit of brown undertone.
