I obtained a 5.6 carat blue sapphire from a gentlemen in Alamance North Carolina. The gem looks loupe clean and very beautiful with the exception that it has a rather large window due to poor cutting. Where could I possibly go locally to get the stone cut (I live in the Raleigh area)?

Many of us have had stones recut by Jerry Newman - here's his website: http://www.gemartservices.com/ - his rates are reasonable and his turnaround time is usually quite fast - you'd have to ship your stone to him of course but his cutting is top-notch and he's highly regarded around here - it at least would be worthwhile for you to email him with your stone specs (carat weight and dimensions) and some pics, and ask if he thinks it would be a good candidate for a re-cut - he'll be honest.

Agree, do contact Jerry

I don't know if I'm allowed to comment or not.
Oh well...
Be careful with sapphires. They are tricky stones. Native cutting isn't just about preserving weight, although it's an important factor. The local cutters know how to hide inclusions or maximise the color / play with color zoning.
In your case, I'm a bit concerned that removing the window will probably darken the stone. Of course without seeing the actual stone; I'm speculating more than anything else.

Just my 2 cents ;))

I agree with Dioptase; my gut feel is that the window was deliberately cut to allow light into an overly dark stone.
