9-11 Never Forget!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Karl - this is always a bit of comfort as we remember the horror of that day. I remember the patriotism that was shown that day; 20 years later we seem to be in a world removed from those feelings. I hope this 20 year remembrance strikes something in every American as we move forward. We, as a nation, have much work to do to try to get back to the place of unity.

Thank you Stormy, as always, for putting this up.

Last month I went to a memorial service down in Austin for a friend who had passed away earlier this year. I've said before (although apparently in another thread because I don't see the the post in this one... ?) that I was in the Sears Tower on 9/11 and there was a rumor being reported that a plane had run into that too. Those of us fleeing the tower didn't know that at the time but it was all over the radio. My Austin friend called me in a panic and I was on the phone with him as I was walking home from there. I remember as clear as day being on the Clark Street bridge and him telling me the firs tower had fallen. I came to a dead stop on the bridge with scores of people flowing past me and was like, "What does that even MEAN?" I could not wrap my head around it.

Another friend who went down to the memorial service with me as we all worked together back then had landed in Columbus that morning (which is where our company was based) and learned about what was going on once she got off the plane. There were obviously no flights back to Chicago at that time but she had a rental car since she was there for work. She was absolutely hysterical as her best friend worked in the WTC (and his remains were later identified many years later from DNA) and it was our friend who passed away earlier this year (who lived in Columbus at the time) who made her come to his house and stay there until she was calm enough to safely drive back to Chicago. He and his wife loaded her up with food in the car and talked to her on the phone pretty much the whole way back to make sure she was OK.

9/11 touched us in so many very personal ways, and continues to do so these many years later...

Last night on my car radio I heard a replay of Tom Brokaw speaking on 9/11 of 2001. He mentioned the evacuation of all the tall buildings in the country, even one in Disney World. The Sears Tower was prominent among the ones evacuated, @Dee*Jay. Even the Mall of America was shut down. I do not recall all these details. Thank you for sharing your story. We say, "never forget", but not forgetting sometimes means continuing to share what we remember.

20 years ago, and halfway around the world I was studying at night in the university hostel when I found out about the collapse of the towers in NYC. I still remember the profound sense of horror and grief for the many people who died that day. The pictures that appeared in the newspapers over the next few days are still no less harrowing when seen 20 years later:

My condolences to anyone who lost someone they knew and loved that day.

Never forget. I was in high school in MD at the time. My friend and I were braiding each others’ hair in the library when the TVs came on. We didn’t get it - it didn’t make any sense. A joke? But it didn’t look like a joke?

I remember going to visit the towers as a child and standing on the glass floors and looking through. My mum was leery but I felt invincible, with however many feet of glass between me and Down. It was a very long way Down.

9/11 is my first clear memory of a world-changing event. I remember princess Diana’s death but I was more interested in what mum was packing me for lunch that day. Just too young to understand.

I was very lucky, on 9/11. The few family members who might have been in the towers or at the Pentagon weren’t, that day. Some of my classmates were less lucky. I think it didn’t sink in until I saw how they were reacting. Two girls were out of school for several weeks afterward, no need to ask why.

But I was in northern MD… Too far from NYC to be a commuter area, too far from DC to be a commuter area. We escaped the carnage.

I’m so sorry for everyone who lost loved ones, on that day of horror and in the aftermath. :(sad We won’t ever forget.

I will never forget!

It truly felt that the country was under attack.

I had forgotten how early in the morning the events occurred.

Was working for a company in the transportation industry outside of Baltimore. It is a big company with a family feeling to it. Clients and sales persons all over the country.

After the first plane everyone tried to access ABC and other network websites. Those that were able to get through kept them up for everyone to watch.

We watched and talked together in our fishbowl. Then the second tower. Then the Pentagon. Phone calls from customers asking us what was happening thinking we had some sort of insider information. Peoples spouses that worked for the federal government in DC evacuating and scared.

Then the plane in Shanksville, PA. We actually were expecting a client visit from Pittsburg. They turned around and went home. People were leaving to pick up their kids from school.

And then when the FAA grounded all planes we realized that nobody knew what was going on and we were truly under attack. The whole sales force rented cars all over the country to return to Maryland.

Does anyone else remember the fighter jets and the armored vehicles surrounding the important buildings in their cities?

I will never forget being right there that day 20 years ago. A day just like today weather wise. Crisp, cool and beautiful before the world changed. May all those who are gone be at peace and may their loved ones always keep them in their hearts.

I did not live in a city, so I did not experience that. Thank you for reminding me that it happened.

I can't forget. I live on Long Island. I was in high school and found out from a security guard as I was heading back into the building after sneaking out. When I went in and went to class our teacher put the TV on and we watched. We watched the second plane hit, and then we all realized this wasn't an accident. They dismissed school early, so many kids were rightfully panicking as their parents worked in or near the area (and plenty of teachers with their friends and family). We stayed glued to the TV for the rest of the day pretty much in disbelief.

When I go to the city now and go anywhere near the memorial I almost can't stand it. It's so gut-wrenching.

As a young person, I spent a lot of time at the towers because I had friends who worked there. I walked the concourse, shopped for books at the Borders, had lunch near the sphere. Normal stuff. On the higher floors you could feel the buildings sway on windy days, and you could often look down on the clouds when it rained.

I worked a few miles north. On that morning I was like @missy -- running late and hurrying to my office. When I got there, my coworkers were rushing to the south windows. I joined them and saw the hole in the North Tower. The damage looked bad but contained. A weird accident, we thought. I rushed back to my desk and started logging in only to hear everyone in the office gasp as the 2nd tower was hit.

Most people's cell phones didn't work. There was no local radio or tv signal because the main antennae had been on the towers, so we watched the news broadcast out of NJ. At the time there was no way to know if our loved ones were ok. We couldn't tear ourselves away. I thought somehow that the fires would stop. That the smoke would stop and that everyone below the impacted sections would be ok. I watched the towers fall and I still have trouble believing that they're gone.

I have never been to the memorial and I don't watch the commemorative ceremonies but I hope they give healing and comfort to those who lost loved ones that day.

I will never forget. I was living in Chatham, NJ where a lot of people that worked in the city lived. I was tying my sneakers getting ready to take a walk. The tv was on when I saw the footage of the first tower..I watched the second one go down. I heard screaming outside my house. There was a lady running down the road back and forth in front of my house holding her head. Her husband was in one of the buildings..She was hysterical. I ran up the hill to help her. She grabbed me and broke lose to scream and pace. I helped walk her home. I found out later she saw the footage at the same time and just ran out of the house leaving her little children home alone. I asked her where her children were because I remembered seeing her walk the children. She just stared at me like she didn’t even understand what I said. I offered to take the children until she could find out if he was okay. She said no and went into her house. I remember calling my sons schools..and telling them I wanted to pick them up. Her husband did make it out alive. There was an bombing or explosion that had happened somewhere in the city previously. That scared him…He trained himself by running up and down the stairs whenever he heard a noise that he couldn’t identify. He worked on that insurance floor…I don’t remember the name of the company…Everyone made fun of him when he would dash downstairs. I think he was the only one that made it out of his floor.
My husband was in one of the buildings three days before. I kept his pass..
I’m going to look up the insurance company because I feel bad I forgot the name..
I don’t want to forget anything. The feelings and memories of what happened I definitely will not forget.

Bless him and your husband. There are so many stories like this.

I know of someone who was also there for the previous bombing as well as 9/11. When she heard announcements telling workers to stay at their desks, she cursed a blue streak and got out of there. I'm sure there were many others whose fear and instincts saved them.

Ten years ago there was an earthquake in NY and many of us rushed down the stairs and towards the nearest park like a shot. We may not think of it every day but the trauma is still with us.

Yes..I remember now that there was an an announcement to stay at their desks. TG the man didn’t listen..

I can't watch the shows, I just close my eyes and see it as clear as the day it happened in my head.

ive had to upgrade from a regular hanky to an old soft pillowcase
i keep thinking we have all had another 20 years and all those people were just at work doing their job that morning and they never got to come
From thousands of miles away watching from my safe warm bed before getting up for work the most terrifying thing ive ever seen

love to America and all her people

dear Missy
i didn't know you 20 years ago but you were most definatly in my prayers that day

I can't believe it's been 20 years. It seems like a completely different country now. "If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate." -Sandy Dahl, wife of Flight 93 pilot.

We were on our honeymoon in Avignon, France on 9/11. We were dining at a bistro and I went inside to use the ladies room. Everyone inside the tiny restaurant was watching the TV. Of course, the TV commentary was in French and I didn't understand a word of it. I saw the footage of the towers but I couldn't comprehend it. A nice lady finally explained it. Surreal is the only word I can think of. We ended up finding a bar with a lot of Americans and watched CNN with them for the rest of the day. The next few days were terrifying. We couldn't call home or even use email as the networks were so jammed. It was a very helpless feeling. I have never wanted to be home as bad as I did the following week. It just seemed wrong to not be there to grieve with our families and friends. That was my one and only trip to Europe. I really doubt we will ever go back.

Never forget. Never forget the loss of so many or the heroic efforts of so many. Never forget what it means to be an American.

A lovely American couple came out to where we are in Australia. They had two sons who were of compatible ages with our son. She was working and he was taking a sabbatical over here and looking after their two young sons. We got to know them well as he was often seeking out our son as company for his boys, saying his behaved better when they had the additional company of our son for company.

It was awful for all of us over here, who knew them, when we learned that the father was one of those who had died in one of the twin towers. He was a wonderful gentle man, good company and so good with his boys. I spent a long time wishing they had stayed over here rather than returning home. This event really affected so many both near and far.

im.watching one of the many many docos on demand on tvnz
im seeing some things after the plane crashes but before the collapses that we havn't seen before as we were asleep and the tragedy just got worse and worse
im yelling at the tv
get out ! get out ! get out ! go home now !

so many times over the years we have thought about all that dust and the people who got covered in it and breathed it in that day

Todd: Hello… Operator…listen to me… I can’t speak very loud. – This is an emergency. I’m a passenger on a United flight to San Francisco… We have a situation here… Our plane has been hijacked… Can you understand me?

Lisa: (exhaling a deep breath to herself) I understand… Can the hijackers see you talking on the phone?

Todd: No.

Lisa: Can you tell me how many hijackers are on the plane?

Todd: There are three that we know of.

Lisa: Can you see any weapons? What kind of weapons do they have?

Todd: Yes… they don’t have guns… they have knives – they took over the plane with knives.

Lisa: Do you mean…like steak knives?

Todd: No, these are razor knives…like box cutters.

Lisa: Can you tell what country these people are from?

Todd: No…..I don’t know. They sound like they’re from the mid-east.

Lisa: Have they said what they want?

Todd: Someone announced from the cockpit that there was a bomb on board. He said he was the captain and to stay in our seats and stay quiet.
He said that they were meeting these men’s demands and returning to the airport… It was very broken English, and… I’m telling you…it sounded fake!

Lisa: Ok sir, please give me your name.

Todd: My name is Todd Beamer.

Lisa: Ok Todd….my name is Lisa…Do you know your flight number? If you can’t remember, it’s on your ticket.

Todd: It’s United Flight 93.

Lisa: Now Todd, can you try to tell me exactly what happened?

Todd: Two of the hijackers were sitting in first class near the cockpit. A third one was sitting near the back of the coach section. The two up. front got into the cockpit somehow; there was shouting. The third hijacker said he had a bomb. It looks like a bomb. He’s got it tied to his waist with a red belt of some kind.

Lisa: So is the door to the cockpit open?

Todd: No, the hijackers shut it behind them.

Lisa: Has anyone been injured?

Todd: Yes, ..they…they killed one passenger sitting in first class. There’s been lots of shouting. We don’t know if the pilots are dead or alive. A flight attendant told me that the pilot and copilot had been forced from the cockpit and may have been wounded.

Lisa: Where is the 3rd hijacker now Todd?

Todd: He’s near the back of the plane. They forced most of the passengers into first class. There are fourteen of us here in the back. Five are flight attendants. He hasn’t noticed that I slipped into this pantry to get the phone. The guy with the bomb ordered us to sit on the floor in the rear of the plane… oh Jesus… Help!

Lisa: Todd….are you ok? Tell me what’s happening!

Todd: Hello… We’re going down… I think we’re going to crash… Wait – wait a minute. No, we’re leveling off… we’re okay. I think we may be turning around… That’s it – we changed directions. Do you hear me… we’re flying east again.

Lisa: Ok Todd… What’s going on with the other passengers?

Todd: Everyone is… really scared. A few passengers with cell phones have made calls to relatives. A guy, Jeremy, was talking to his wife just before the hijacking started. She told him that hijackers had crashed two planes into the World Trade Center… Lisa is that true??

Lisa: Todd… I have to tell you the truth… it’s very bad. The World Trade Center is gone. Both of the towers have been destroyed.

Todd: Oh God —help us!

Lisa: A third plane was taken over by terrorists. It crashed into the Pentagon in Washington DC. Our country is under attack… and I’m afraid that your plane may be part of their plan.

Todd: Oh dear God. Dear God… Lisa, will you do something for me?

Lisa: I’ll try… if I can… Yes.

Todd: I want you to call my wife and my kids for me and tell them what’s happened. Promise me you’ll call..

Lisa: I promise – I’ll call.

Todd: Our home number is 201 353-1073… You have the same name as my wife… Lisa… We’ve been married for 10 years. She’s pregnant with our 3rd child. Tell her that I love her… (choking up)… I’ll always love her…(clearing throat) We have two boys.. David, he’s 3 and Andrew, he’s 1… Tell them…(choking) tell them that their daddy loves them and that he is so proud of them. (clearing throat again) Our baby is due January 12th… I saw an ultra sound…. t was great... we still don’t know if it’s a girl or a boy… Lisa?

Lisa: (barely able to speak) I’ll tell them, I promise Todd.

Todd: I’m going back to the group—if I can get back I will…

Lisa: Todd, leave this line open… are you still there?…

Lisa: (dials the phone..) Hello, FBI, my name is Lisa Jefferson, I’m a telephone supervisor for GTE. I need to report a terrorist hijacking of a United Airlines Flight 93…. Yes I’ll hold.

Goodwin: Hello, this is Agent Goodwin... I understand you have a hijacking situation?

Lisa: Yes sir, I’ve been talking with a passenger, a Todd Beamer, on Flight 93 who managed to get to an air phone unnoticed.

Goodwin: Where did this flight originate, and what was its destination?

Lisa: The flight left Newark New Jersey at 8 A.M. departing for San Francisco. The hijackers took over the plane shortly after takeoff, and several minutes later the plane changed course – it is now flying east.

Goodwin: Ms. Jefferson…I need to talk to someone aboard that plane. Can you get me thru to the planes phone?

Lisa: I still have that line open sir, I can patch you through on a conference call…hold a mo…..

Todd: Hello Lisa, Lisa are you there?

Lisa: Yes, I’m here. Todd, I made a call to the FBI, Agent Goodwin is on the line and will be talking to you as well.

Todd: The others all know that this isn’t your normal hijacking. Jeremy called his wife again on his cell phone. She told him more about the World Trade Center and all.

Goodwin: Hello Todd. This is Agent Goodwin with the FBI. We have been monitoring your flight. Your plane is on a course for Washington, DC. These terrorists sent two planes into the World Trade Center and one plane into the Pentagon. Our best guess is that they plan to fly your plane into either the White House or the United States Capital Building.

Todd: I understand…hold on……I’ll…….I’ll be back..

Lisa: Mr. Goodwin, how much time do they have before they get to Washington?

Goodwin: Not long ma’am. They changed course over Cleveland; they’re approaching Pittsburgh now. Washington may be twenty minutes away.

Todd: (breathing a little heavier) The plane seems to be changing directions just a little. It’s getting pretty rough up here. The plane is flying real erratic….We’re not going to make it out of here. Listen to me….I want you to hear this….I have talked with the others….we have decided we would not be pawns in these hijackers suicidal plot.

Lisa: Todd, what are you going to do?

Todd: We’ve hatched a plan. Four of us are going to rush the hijacker with the bomb. After we take him out, we’ll break into the cockpit. A stewardess is getting some boiling water to throw on the hijackers at the controls. We’ll get them….and we’ll take them out. Lisa, …..will you do one last thing for me?

Lisa: Yes…What is it?

Todd: Would you pray with me?

They pray: Our father which art in Heaven

Hallowed be thy name,

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our trespasses

As we forgive our trespassers,

And lead us not into temptation

But deliver us from evil

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory

Forever…..Amen

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want…

He makes me to lie down in green pastures

He leads me beside the still waters

He restores my soul

He leads me in paths of righteousness

for His name’s sake

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

I will fear no evil, for thou art with me…..

Todd: (softer) God help me…Jesus help me….(clears throat and louder)

Are you guys ready?……..

Let’s Roll…………………… #NeverForget

Nope. Never.

My son has a saying..."my memory is scarred with it".

Every year I sit here with tears running down my face remembering that day. Re-reading the older threads and posts from 9-11 in years gone by.
It has been 21 years, a child born that day reaches the legal drinking age in the US this year.
The time may have gone on but the memories of that day are a fresh as if it just happened.

Every year I am torn, do I raise an older thread in tribute to the tears shed over it or do I start a new thread.
This year raising this thread just seems right.

Bless you one and all.
Never Forget!!!

OMG Karl, thank you for this.
Your humanity exceeds your immense talent. Thank you.

This is the only place I’ll acknowledge it. Social media feels too contrived.

Kids I work with now have no recollection (some were born in the late 90s, early 2000s) so it’s not the same remembering collectively as it was about 10 years ago. We’ve gotten older and they’re concerned with who even knows what.

In 2001 my life was just beginning—I was a recent college grad with my first salaried job and I was out of state doing training when the attacks happened. I watched in horror along with the rest of my cohort on the tv in the breakfast area of the hotel we were all staying at, and then we went to company HQ. We didn’t complete an entire workday; we were sent home midway through the day as the attacks continued on the pentagon, etc. I will never forget the feeling of utter disbelief and vulnerability knowing our country was under attack and NOT knowing who was responsible nor WHY it was happening.

The courageous people who took action that day during what was surely the most terrifying experience of their lives before they passed, I have never forgotten. They deserved a place of honor and riches for eternity for their selfless actions and quick thinking. I can only hope our particular universe kept track and doled out punishment or reward to those who deserved it for what went on that day.
