A Collection of Halos

Elam » 10 Oct 2011 13:42
Had some reservations about color of the center stone being too light (its light yellow) but it looks more intensed when set so I'm happy. Design was inspired by Tiffany's Soleste. Set with slightly bigger side stones and thicker band instead of thin split shank. It's 14mm wide so quite huge even on my size 6 finger. I just got it and only wore it twice. Think I would wear it on my left index to pair with casual outfit, right ring finger with suit. It's so flashy I feel guilty showing to friends and colleagues so its good to have a platform (here) for me to share my new love

My boyfriend hasn't officially proposed but my ring is done! We got the pictures yesterday and I'm so excited. The milgrain looks perfect and I love all the details! I was worried about the halo stones being to big and I would have preferred smaller melee but he couldn't get it to fit given the size of the center stone. I think the face on shot is taken from a higher up angle instead of dead on because the bottom half of the halo looks smaller than the top half. I don't mind the larger halo in the side view picture and hope it looks more like that then the face on shot.

This post is long overdue. Those that remember me can reference my original posts nearly a year ago about trying to find a specific Radiant diamond that was similar to a video Good Old Gold recorded a long ago. Simply put, Jonathan informed me that Radiants vary widely in appearance and the one I referenced in his video was one that was sold a long time ago and he hasn't had any like it since then. After months of waiting and exhausting all his channels, Jonathan gave me the option of obtaining a raw diamond that would match my specifications and getting his cutter to recreate it. After getting it cut, I then had to figure out the setting and after a couple months, I had to get that custom-made too.

After about a year of waiting for the perfect setting for my now fiance, I ended up proposing to her in Cancun, Mexico for our first overseas vacation in front of a crowd of over 500 people at our resort.

Since then, we've been planning our wedding I had to call upon Good Old Gold once more to get me a custom-made wedding band that will fit her engagement ring. The wedding band is being created as I type this, but I hope to have it in my possession in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, if you'd like to reference the original post, it's located here:

Jonathan took the liberty of taking some YouTube videos of the diamond ring as well:
[ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLI67hZG5d0 ] - Diamond Video
[ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8U6g90zI1hw ] - Ring Video

Lastly, I want to again thank Jonathan for his diamond expertise, helpfulness, and extreme patience with me over the course of the past year. Also I would like to thank Marie, who helped to take my idea of both an engagement ring & wedding band and get it custom made to my specifications. Marie has been a tremendous help on both occasions. I would absolutely recommend Good Old Gold to anyone and can not say enough good things about my experience and jewelry.

Without further ado, here are some of the pictures I shot of the ring. Hopefully the wedding band will be in soon and I can add them as well.

First and foremost, many thanks to all of the terrific members of PS who have endured this journey with me. If not for you, I wouldn't have even known what an antique stone looked like, much less what to look for.

Second, truckloads of thanks to Ari at Singlestone. This ring could never have come to fruition without all of his patience, hand-holding and honesty. Not only is he an artist, but he's a wonderful person and has been a delight to work with.

The ring is being shipped to me on Monday, but Ari sent a few photos to tide me over. He asked me to remember that these are "pre-polishing". I will post handshots as soon as the ring is on my finger! I hope that you all think the setting is worthy of this special stone. I am honored to be it's guardian until it's time to pass it down to a grandchild someday.

I know you all want stats, so here they are: 2.83 OMB (technically speaking...the GIA report says oval modified brilliant). E color, VS2 clarity, ring size 5.5

My friend Catherine has been married for almost 2 years now, and last night as she was helping me celebrate my birthday with some cake and wine, it was the first time I thought about snapping a pic of her gorgeous ring. I don't know all of the specs, but I do know that the center stone is a 1.09 D cushion and the setting was a custom made replica of the Tiffany Legacy.

The backstory:

I lost my engagement ring almost a year ago, and so figuring we would be celebrating our 15th anniversary and a milestone birthday for me, we would replace it. I spent months educating myself via Pricescope and searching, and found the diamond I was looking for at Old World Diamonds.

Diamond specs:
GIA certified
Old Mine Brilliant

I bought my 2plus carat RB from ERD a few years ago and had it set in a solitaire. Unfortunately, DSS set in soon after especially since the stone was set really low. I also got a little bored with the simple setting and longed for something more blingy.

I worked with Mark of ERD and to be honest, like some other posters had experienced, he was sometimes responsive, sometimes not so much. However, he was very helpful and accommodating throughout this transaction and I wouldn't hesitate to work with him again.

Once I purchased the stone, I contacted Steve Kirsch to make the setting for me. Having had a bad custom experience once, I was very nervous to embark on this one. I exchanged many emails with Steven to hash out the details and not once was he short with me.

A couple of things were particularly important to me that I really wanted to get right this time, the size of the halo, and the airline (or the lack thereof). I wanted to go as small as feasible on the halo, smaller than the original HW setting, bearing in mind that this was not an everyday ring for me. And the airline, well, I just didn’t want one.

I sent Steven a few photos and even though he assured me that he knew what I wanted, with no CAD, I was nervous until the very last minute. I heaved a huge sigh of relief when Steven sent me photos of my ring. It was exactly what I had envisioned. The ring IRL is beautiful and the pavework, just impeccable.

So here are the parts that went into building my 100% hand forged ring.

Hi all,

A while ago I posted here asking for some advice on a ring. I ended up going with the platinum version of this ring from Eternity Diamonds, as well as a beautiful 1.03ct round diamond from them which happened to be triple-excellent (the polish and symmetry were a bonus... I was mostly concerned about getting an excellent cut). She had no idea I had been looking for a ring or that I was going to propose. She was completely blown away by it, so I think I made the right choice.

I want to start out by thanking PS and all the wonderful members of the forum for all the knowledge I've gleaned over the years! I still have my original 0.98 carat round diamond that my DH proposed with, but this is the diamond I purchased after I found PS. I fell in love with halos from the moment I first saw them on PS. I knew I had to eventually get one for the amazing finger coverage they provide. I highly recommend Eternity Diamonds, who made this custom halo. Yoni is the guy to talk to. He truly goes above and beyond, and he has been so patient and accommodating. Eternity Diamonds has amazing quality and wonderful prices. Seriously, the prices are so reasonable but the quality is there, and that's the most important thing. They use G/H ideal cut melee and it's extremely white and bright in person. They look whiter than my center stone. This is a very sturdy halo and shank, which was extremely important to me since I don't want to worry about losing stones or having to baby the ring. It's a LOT of finger coverage and it will take some getting used to, haha. But I'm sure I'll be fine with it in no time. I feel very lucky! Anyway, thanks for looking, and if you're shopping for diamond studs or a reset, I highly recommend calling Yoni. I hope they become more well-known around PS!

Well if anyone has followed my unhappiness with my engagement ring setting, this is one of the pit stops towards a resolution. During my waffeling over what to do regarding my setting, I found a lovely carmose ring ( don't know what to call it in English). Imagine my shock when I found out that the sapphire it currently contains is pretty much a match to my OMC. Pretty much the same shape and incredibly the measurements are very close. The sapphire is 6.9 x 6.0mm and my OMC is 6.89 x 6.17mm. Since it is a prong setting it should work to put my poor OMC in this new setting.

Well since I have to be complicated I went and fell in love with how the setting and the sapphire looks together .

The ring kinda looks like the little sister Princess Diana/Kate's engagement ring. Same color sapphire included. The sapphire is that typical really dark blue but when the light hits it goes all blue flashes. Also it has some abrasions to the facet edges near the table.

The ring is from 1945 so it has some issues that need to be fixed, several prongs need retipping. So as soon as I have decided what to do with it it is going in for a complete refurbishment.

The head is 18kt white gold and the shank is 18kt red gold. It has 10 five pointers, H color and SI, probably leaning towards transitional cuts. They are definitively not modern cuts. They are nice and firey in practically every lightning situation.

Thanks to the members of this forum, I found a great stone, a great craftsman, and ended up with a beautiful e-ring!
I was interested in a Canera setting for several reasons -- hand forged, no cast pieces, and his reputation for outstanding quality and customer service. I contacted Victor through email, and promptly received a response with a quote and an estimated timeline for completing the project. After several more emails followed by near-instant replies, I shipped the diamond and a deposit. Victor completed the project one week early, and under budget!! I visited his office today and picked up the ring. I didn't have my girlfriend's input on any part of the process as I wanted to keep it traditional and surprise her. Hopefully she likes it...

I won the following pendant on Ebay. The seller stated the diamond was an 1.85ct OEC J VS2... My e-ring is a GIA J, and it was obvious to me that the pendant diamond was a lot warmer than a J. But the pendant was still pretty, so after a small partial refund, I decided to keep it... Here are some pics of the pendant before... More to come with the reset!

I am FINALLY getting around to posting a couple pics of my engagement ring! I still don't have a camera that takes great pictures so I'm using my phone camera. Sorry, they aren't the greatest quality but I still wanted to share them anyway. I got engaged on May 25th and I just couldn't wait any longer! The stone is an antique Old Mine Cut and sparkles like crazy. Even when there's almost no light around it seems to find it from somewhere . The setting is a Scott Kay setting from Jared. The stone is set a little higher than I would have liked but I've actually gotten really used to it and kind of prefer it that way now. I think it shines so bright because it can catch light from any angle. I haven't had any problems with it catching anything either so I'll leave it as is.

stone stats: Good cut, H-J color, .72 ct, VS2 clarity

I wanted to start off with a big thank you to Pricescope and all those who contribute to it. I learned so much from everyone! In return, here is my contribution!

In September 2010, with the help of Todd Neuhaus from Union Diamond, I found my beautiful diamond! Fi and I decided that we would put the bulk of the budget on the diamond, and picked this 3-stone setting as our temp. setting (back in September, I believe this setting was closer to $400 ... not anymore due to the price jumps!)

Here are the diamond specs:
GIA
Shape and Cutting Style: Cushion Modified Brilliant
Measurements: 6.65 x 6.62 x 4.09 mm
Carat wt: 1.51 ct
Color: Natural Fancy Yellow
Clarity: VVS2
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: None

At that pre-Pricescope time, my "mind clean" goals were a square cushion, more than 1.5 ct (ooo... exceeded by 0.01ct!), and LxW greater than 6.5mm. The VVS2 was a bonus. And I wanted lemon yellow, not butter beige! This was pre-Pricescope, so I did not know about the existence of assets and other informative documentation that is available for diamonds. Luckily, my sales rep really listened and guided me through the process. UD also had a good return policy. Upon receipt of the ring, I brought it to an independent appraiser, Barry Block, who also turned out to be a Pricescope recommended independent appraiser, who verified that the diamond matched the GIA report and that I had gotten a good deal!

I felt special because after we got this ring, I saw that Union Diamond had put the picture up on their FB and website - call me corny!

While I was diamond searching with Todd, I started googling reviews of UD, and found Pricescope! Through Pricescope, I got infected with DSS, and learned that sometimes halos can cure DSS! (smiley + halo!)

As I was flipping through the halo topics, I came upon this halo: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-co-workers-new-bgd-halo.134273/............. It was my dream setting! . All that milgraining, especially the double in the center made me go gaga! I saved it and e-mailed the thread to my fiance, he liked it too. I was also excited about the prospect of working with BGD, too. This was early 2011. THEN the crazy price hikes... A custom setting with BGD would be way out of what I deemed a reasonable budget, and I was very disappointed

Although I had planned on resetting my cushion at a much later date (a couple of years down the road), the rapidly rising prices really forced my hand. Through Pricescope I learned that halos that looked like this BGD halo were Tiffany-Legacy-inspired halos, and that many other Pricescope vendors could create a similar halo. Ultimately, I went with ERD because I wanted someone in NY (where we live), and since this was going to be my "forever setting", I anticipated the ring needing some maintenance through the years, so I wanted to keep the vendor local. Also, ERD had a very competitive price for what I wanted executed, and since their specialty was cushions, who better to leave my "precious" with? Also, I wanted the setting to be made to conform to MY diamond, and ERD, as cushion experts, understand that cushions come in different shapes - i.e., some are more curvy, more angular, etc., so they intended on creating the CADs around my diamond.

Setting design - I knew I wanted a legacy inspired setting. I wanted the band to be half eternity because I didn't want to "feel" the diamonds in between my fingers, if that makes sense, and since I'm clumsy, I could foresee myself knocking melee out of the bottom of the band all the time. Adding to the clumsy factor, I wanted a yellow gold bezel around my diamond to protect it. I also wanted milgrain around the bezel in the center. I initially wanted a white gold setting, but the prices jumped up so much that the difference between white gold and platinum was negligible, so, with the help of my fellow Pricescopers, (see the thread below), I decided on a PT950/Ru blend.

Long story short, I taught him what I could and the resulting ring is HIS vision. It's more beautiful and more 'me' than anything I could have chosen myself. It's a 1.43 L VS2 August Vintage Cushion from Good Old Gold, and the setting was custom made in platinum by Brian Gavin Diamonds. A big thank you to both these outstanding vendors for helping create the ring of my dreams!

We're so happy and excited! I feel truly lucky to be able to spend the rest of my life with the most wonderful man, my perfect match.
