Saw the list of the new "DTC sightholders" on the RAP Report newsletter, and it made me think of a number of questions...
"Who are these people?" ...and "How did they get to be sightholders?" "Is this just a DeBeers thing?" "What if you''re ''not'' a sightholder?" "Do the big guys out there buy from other sources as well?" "Who do these sightholders sell their diamonds to?" "Does all this hapen only in Antwerp?" "Where do Kay''s, Zale''s, etc, buy their diamonds from?" "What about the internet vendors, do they get them from the same big sources?" "What about the little mom-n-pop B&M jewlers?"
Which then made me ask, "Hey, where were these diamonds BEFORE the sightholders got them?" "Who had them before they got there???" "... and what about after the stones came from the mines, where did they go from there? (DeBeers as well as non-DeBeers mines)" "Is the rough always sold to owners of big cutting factories?" "Are the owners of those cutting factories often sightholders as well?" "Do sightholders only buy/sell cuts? or rough too?" "Is rough sold in Antwerp as well as cuts?"
...all of which brings me to this posting. Maybe a few of you experts out there can shed some light on this...
Take us on an ADVENTURE! Educate us on "The Life of a Diamond"... from the time it leaves the mine, until it ends up as a sparkly stone on the left hand of some lucky lady...
