I was taking some pictures of an andalusite for Colored Stone magazine, and noticed a different kind of cat''s eye in one of the shots...

What a cool looking stone!
 
How does one create such an appearance? Is it inherent to the stone where the cutter is able to bring it out or it is pure cutting that did it? It’s neat how the yellow band accentuates the entire snake eye effect.
 
It''s a normal stone but this was just a strange combination of reflection and refraction. I took about a dozen pictures with different stone positions, and this is the only that showed this effect. Other cutters have reported strange things that they see in their gemstone photos too.
