A few questions to help with asscher peridot purchase...

I am going to work with Gary Braun on a asscher cut peridot and I need some advice from PS! I already had one post, but I have a few additional questions so here goes:

1) I am trying to decide whether or not to set the stone in a pave split shank setting (no halo) with double claw prongs or to set it in a split shank (no diamonds) bezel setting. Or I guess I could even do the bezel setting with the pave split shank???? Let me know what you guys think. Do you think peridot is too dark of a stone to put in a bezel setting? Would the steps be more apparent in the prong setting since more light will be hitting it? Here are a few settings that I am considering:

2) I wear a size 4 ring and I''m not sure whether to go with a 7mm or an 8mm. If you have small fingers and own a 7-8mm asscher ring, would you mind posting a few pics?

I do realize that peridot is somewhat of a soft stone to put in a ring, but I am very careful with my jewelry, so I think it should be ok.

Your advice is so very much appreciated!

I say 7mm. My 8mm asscher is really big on my size 6 finger. LTP could probably answer this question best.

Another vote for the smaller stone! I have a 7mm-ish asscher that is going in a similar setting to LTP's (made by the same artist). It's a good size for my 6.75 finger.

ETA: I'd strongly suggest going with the bezel for peridot because of its softness. Even the most careful of us will inevitably cause some wear to a soft stone like peridot, and a bezel will at least protect the girdle.

I suggest going with a bezel setting to protect the peridot as much as possible. Also, please use a benchperson who is skilled in setting softer stones so it will not be damaged in the process. In general, peridots do not get really dark so a bezel setting will not be an issue. If you are concerned with the light factor, you can always chose a open pavilion design bezel setting instead of the more common enclosed bezel setting.

As for the size, I’d do 8 mm. For asscher cut stones, the smaller they are, the more difficult it is to make out the individual step cuts. In fact, 6 mm is the smallest size I recommend to even go with an asscher facet pattern. I wear a size 4.5 and have no problems wearing stones around 10 x10 mm.

Hi Stargurl - you are going to love your asscher peridot from Gary!

I''d also suggest bezeling it if it''s going to be a special ring that you wear often to protect the peridot. My grossular garnet is only 6.61mm, but the bezel really adds some extra bulk to it. I''d suggest going with 7mm if it''s an often worn ring, 8mm if you don''t mind wearing 10mm+ of ring on your hand.

This is what that same ring looks like on my size 5 finger from further away. And alone.

Thank you for your thoughts everyone! I am still pretty new to PS (and yes, I am already addicted), so I definitely appreciate the advice

Lauren - would you mind posting farther away hand pics (like the one above) of your scapolite and aqua rings? Those are both around 8mm, correct? And could you give me the name of who made your bezel settings? By the way, I never used to like bezel-set rings, but you have made me a changed woman! I LOVE your collection

I think I might actually go with something around a 7.5mm - I've tried on some 7mm stones which seem a tad smaller than I am hoping for, but 8mm seems a tad too large. It's crazy how 1mm can make such a big difference in the appearance of a stone!

Sure, Stargurl, and thank you for your kind words!

Here''s the scapolite at 8.25mm;

And I''ve searched everywhere, but this is the farthest out shot I have of the aqua. It''s 2.9 ct. and 8.2mm.

I vote for bezel set and about 7 mm.

Oh my! Now you've got me thinking that I want a plain band, rather than the split shank, hmmm... Thank you Lauren for sharing your photos. One more question for you regarding that ring - being that the stone is so large, does it sit really high?

I am starting to think I really wouldn't mind the size of the 8mm, I am just loving that scapolite ring

And it wouldn't be worn everyday (because that just wouldn't be fair to my other RHRs!) so I don't think I would mind the size too much... decisions, decisions...

Does anyone know the size stats on mochi's chrysberel? I have found a few posts, but I couldn't find one that states the size stats. I am loving this ring as well, but I am thinking I'd like something a tad larger so I was just curious if anyone knew.

Stargurl, as with all asschers, this puppy is deep! I''ve had my jeweler set the Scap as low as possible, and it''s still quite high on my hand. So much so, that when I reach into my jewelry box for a yellow asscher, I always go for the smaller garnet instead of the scapolite.

That, and the scapolite is so soft, I have a fear of unintentionally abrading the crown.

But, I''m also not a "big jewelry" girl. My most worn gemstones are all under 2.5 ct. or around 7 mm, which is my happy spot.

Thank you again Lauren. Last question - would you mind passing along the name of the jeweler who made your scapolite setting? I have decided to go with a bezel setting and I want to go with someone who is experienced in setting softer stones...
