FI and i were going over our options for our honeymoon and it looks like taking the trip right after our wedding in december is out of the question. we want to go to belize and apparently they have a CRAZY peak season over new years, which is when we would be able to go. We can't take it until the very end of april after that because i'll be in my internship and don't really think it would be a good idea to ask for an entire week off. oh yeah - it's also the rainy season there starting in april

i knew that this was going to be a possibility, but i had really hoped that we would be able to swing it. our total budget is 4k, so not exactly a ridiculous amount, so i shouldn't be surprised that it isn't going to work. i know a lot of people take a delayed honeymoon, but i was really hoping that we wouldn't have to because the furthest we've gone together is florida and we are waiting until we are married to live together, so it would be the longest span of time that we've spent together. also, i would be bummed if we didn't go ANYWHERE after we got married, even if it was just for a long weekend over new years, which i know we won't because we don't really have the money for even a minimoon.

just feeling sad about it

I''m so sorry, Mimzy....but there''s got to be a way to pull this off. Our you talking about the flights or the hotel cost? My aunt and uncle fly to Belize at least twice a year and stay at their friends hotel. Maybe I could find out what kind of deals they may have.

Aw! I''m so sorry to hear that! I hope you guys can figure something out. Sending hugs!

aw, mimzy. I''m sorry to hear that your honeymoon plans aren''t turning out as planned. Don''t give up hope, you might be able to figure something out.

Mimzy, are you set on going somewhere warm? My FI and I spent some time in San Francisco over this past New Year''s, and even though it wasn''t very warm we had a great time. We didn''t spend all that much money, and we stayed in a really nice hotel. I don''t know what part of the country you''re in, but have you looked into non-typical destinations? Especially ones relatively close to you, so you could drive instead of fly? It wouldn''t be the same as Belize, but at least it would be something...and sometimes the unexpected places can be really fun!

thanks for the encouragement girls, i super appreciate it. we are still working on it, and won''t give up until we figure something out that we are happy with.

octavia - thanks for the suggestion! FI and i are in detroit, so until we found an AMAZING deal (like $300 for the both of us) we wouldn''t be going anywhere warm regardless. cleveland and chicago would both be options though, if we have to go that route

courtneylub - both the flights and hotels are more expensive...the hotels big time (we''re talking an extra 100 a nite). that''s awesome that they get to go so often! any info you could give me would be awesome

thanks again girls <3

Hopefully something wonderful will work out for you.

Mimzy, does Spirit Airlines still fly out of Detroit? You can joint their $9 fare club (for three months, I think) and they have some CRAZY deals on flights. I get the emails, but am not a member of the club. Right now they are posting a $29 Latin America sale, for example. Maybe you can find a cheap enough flight for a mini-moon.

Mimzy, I'm sorry things aren't looking hopeful for a Belize honeymoon. I think the problem with Belize is that they don't offer all-inclusives so even during their off season the costs of airfare plus hotel really add up. Would you and your FI consider going to an all-inclusive somewhere else? Unfortunately, everywhere is going to be pricer than usual during the time you're looking at, but places like Cuba and the Dominican Republic are usually much more affordable. Good luck - I hope everything works out.

Just wanted to say I think everything works out for you!

What are your days of travel? $4k seems mlike a reasonable amount of money to spend. Is it the airlines or hotel that you can''t find?

Mimzy, I just wanted to pop back in with another suggestion -- have you thought of going north a bit and finding a cozy B&B on the lakeshore, with fireplaces and a private jacuzzi, etc.? I''m sure it will be beautiful in the wintertime, and you can snuggle up and just enjoy being together and relaxing. The big plus of going someplace fairly close is that you could do nostalgic, romantic weekend getaways to the same place occasionally, if you wanted to "minimoon" again at 6 months, any other significant anniversary, or just for fun. You could probably do at least a few days for $1K or so, and you could save the rest of your budget as seed money so you could keep saving for a big blowout 1-year anniversary trip (or whenever).

I think you''ll be able to come up with a lovely honeymoon, even if it means adjusting your original expectations a bit. Please let us know if/when you find something that works for you and your FI!

thanks again for your well wishes and suggestions!

it was a good day for me yesterday when a classmate pointed out that our class doesn''t start until january 12th....a week later than i thought it did. for most resorts down there that is past their peek season, so it looks like we can afford it! AND my FI (who isn''t really interested in traveling AND is one of the cheapest people i know) suggested that we put in another $500 so that we can get a nicer place!!! so needless to say i am pretty thrilled

. it is still going to take some finagling (sp?), but i think we''ll be able to pull it off. and two weeks after our wedding is sooo much better than 4 months .

thanks again!

here''s the place that we are looking at: Laru Beya

they were both super expensive for those dates! 800+ for airfare and 400+ a nite for the rooms....so they were both presenting a problem

I travelled to Belize in Sept 06, which is the low season so everything was resonably priced. An added bonus was that it was lobster season while we were there...$5 Lobster dinners, lobster omlettes, lobster soup..am I sounding like Bubba Gump yet

.

Check out Seaside Cabannas on Caye Caulker. I know they''ve raised their rates since I''ve been there, but everything is so cheap once your on the island. Plus you don''t have to rent a car. You must try a panty ripper..Belizian coconut rum and pineapple juice.

I could go on and on. I''m hoping to plan my honeymoon there around the first part of November. My icon pic is also in Belize.

Oh, Mimzy, that''s great! The place you linked looks beautiful, as does the one brooksie posted. I''ll be keeping my fingers crossed that it all works out for you

Mimzy,

Yah - that's great news

Have you looked into flying out of Hamilton or Toronto? It could be cheaper, but I don't know for sure. I agree 2 weeks is much better than 4 months. Keep us updated.

Take it from someone who postponed the honeymoon and ended up never taking one---GO! Book that plane, book the hotel, go and don't look back!! It's never the same if you wait too long after the wedding. It becomes a vacation but it's hard to recapture the "honeymoon" feeling.
