Advice for sapphire for engagement ring please

Not a bad stone as far as NSC stones go, but they don't give you independent certs free of charge unless stones are larger than 3ct. I prefer this round from Gemfix:

For half the price, you get a larger face up size and a better color, not to mention an AGL gem brief. After buying an unheated sapphire myself from NSC, I now think that buying a heated stone in a more lovely color would have been a better use of my money. After all, plenty of blue Ceylon unheated stones exist, but all unheated Ceylon sapphires of good color are cut rather deep and face up small.

The NSC one has visible inclusions and colour zoning, not a deal breaker but I think their price is excessive.
The Gemfix one is a better gem in my opinion and a lot cheaper.
NSC are known for their ‘higher prices” which doesn’t always convert into a better gem.
And personally I think cut, colour and value for money are higher priorities than “unheated” vs “heated”. No one else sees or notices “unheated” so why pay $$$ for it!

Uhm, sorry, I think the fact that nobody (except pros) notices heat does not qualify as argument for it being 'nevermind'. Say, nobody notices a real from a really good fake Rolex. Still a fake Rolex, yes? In terms of value, guarantees, and the disappointed faces of your kids in 50 years you can't say that heat is as good as unheated only because nobody can see it today. How about syntethics? Hard to notice. Or diffusion treatment? Can't notice either. Value is miniscule compared to the real thing.

Heat is not even remotely similar to diffusion treatment or synthetics. Whether or not someone is comfortable with heat treatment is up to them, but let's not make false equivalences.

Thanks everyone for your opinions! Agree that the price is rather high for the sapphire I linked and would definitely need to have an independent lab identify it. I personally don't mind heating, but it does seem to be polarizing.

I do like the Gemfix options, seems to be much better in terms of price. The Master Cut one as well, although there seems to be a yellow line going through it on side view.

Thoughts about the sapphire on the right for this listing?

If the seller has a rock solid return policy you agree with
And you do not forgo the advertised AGL report - its for sure a contender, but it really depends on what specific cut/color you are expecting and will this certain one meet your desires?

The LT sapphire round I didn't like as much because the tilt window was very prominent, and the table seemed somewhat smaller. For best value I would go with the Mastercut.

For making the most informed decision, maybe you can do what some PSers do and get them all and return the ones you don't want?

Of course 'diffusion' is a different type of treatment than 'heat' but we can't distinguish it on first sight either. Hence the argument cannot be made that "if we don't notice XYZ-treatment it doesn't matter". It's wrong, and opens the door to many other misrepresentations. Correct?

No advises because I didn't qute like any of them. One general consideration.

It is an engagement ring. Not something you wear occasionally, pulling out of a safe. But in your situation, this is something that you are going to see every day. Plus, invest in a setting.

If you are looking at it, daily, and asking yourself, did I buy the right stone, is there a tad of zoning, how about this color shift - then it will spoil your mood, sooner or later. I ended up selling a sapphire bought from a precision cut wizard - only because I did not like looking at the stone every day. (No offense with the cutter).

I would look around. I know Gemfix has good stones, and the vendor is very honest (I bought some stones from him so I know) - if there are any drawbacks he'll be the first to tell you. Gary Braun has good eye for sapphires; I once saw a very nice sapphire sold by Jeff Davies - huge and perhaps outside of your price range but he might have smaller ones, and they can cut out something round, I think.

I bought an unheates sapphire from ajsgems, I am not happy with their prices but the color is awesome.

Will definitely keep looking around. This is our first time looking into buying a CS so we like to be informed. Buying them and then returning them if we don't like them seems a little risky, but I guess if we work with reputable vendors it won't be too much of a hassle.

Thoughts on this?

Like others above, I strongly recommend seeing as many stones as you can in person. Vendors vary in photo and video quality. Your preference "in real life" may be different from photo preference. You want to see your potential stone in the lighting of your daily life. I have purchased and returned stones to Gemfix and Mastercut Gems with no problems.

It's gorgeous . I love it and it looks amazing in the video! Laura at Gemfix is very helpful and will honestly answer any questions you have. They have a no pressure sales approach and returns are a breeze. I would order that stone in a heartbeat! If you have a second choice I would order it at the same time as well, then keep your favorite and return the other.

Just recently bought a beautiful Portuguese cut 2.18 ct sapphire from Finewater gems. Gary was wonderful to work with and sent a video comparing the 2 I was trying to compare. He answered a bunch of questions as it was my first sapphire purchase. I am very happy with the color and cut.
Best of luck.

In my post I said that “ I personally think” that certain other criteria are more important than “heated vs unheated”.
That is my opinion and I am entitled to have it.

I want to echo that Gary @ Finewater Gems is worth contacting.......he is one of the best to deal with! Honest, open, and very, very knowledgeable. I'm sure he has some that are not on his site. Good luck!

Thank you all for for the advice. I have contacted Finewater Gems and will see what they say. Will also contact Gemfix about the sapphire I posted and keep looking around.

@rcjtraveler, any chance you could share what your sapphire looks like?

I don’t know if you are on instagram, but Finewater posted this a few days ago. It looks like these beautiful rounds will be posted to their site this month.

Mine is the smaller one of the three. I sent a picture of the finished ring too as I don’t have any others of just the stone.
Sorry, The video is not loading properly.
Hope this helps.
