I have a citrine ring in 14k that needs a good cleaning. The citrines are prong-set. The border of crystals? is also prong-set. What is the best way to clean this ring? Can I put it in ultrasonic jewelry cleaner or clean it by hand? Use ammonia or some other solvent?

If it's very dirty and has a lot of build up on it, you could leave it overnight in a jeweler's ammonia solution, and then scrub it with a soft toothbrush in the morning. It may take a few times of doing this before all the built up gunk is removed.

i''m with two i would not put that in the ultrasonic. i find citrine to be fagile.

I would take it to a local jewelers and have them get it pristine and then do cleanings with a toothbrush as necessary. I have cleaned my citrine in my US without a problem, but will exercise more caution now.

^^^ +1 on taking it to your local jeweller... many of them will clean it for no charge too

Ultrasonic cleaning will not harm citrine at all unless it''s in contact with other stones. It might shake a few loose stones out of their settings but it''s easier to find them in the U/S tank than if they fall out and get lost during normal wear. They''d need re-setting anyway. After it''s clean follow twodoor2''s suggestions to keep it clean. After soaking, always rinse the jewelry in hot water and dry it with a soft cloth to prevent water spotting.

Thanks for your help! I soaked the ring for an hour in jewelry cleaning solution and scrubbed it with a toothbrush. Looks much better.
