Will this ever be set? It certainly has taken a while! This is a photo I took of my spinel. There are others in another thread :-).

I remember that thread but a quick search didnt turn it up.

How bout a repost?

Hello,
Do you have a photo face up of your spinel?
It is coming from Mogok isn't it? The color looks fine with a nice cut...
Spinel (red and Hot Pink) are truly my favorite stones!
Excellent choice! Fine red spinels are so rare...
I'm happy to see that you enjoy this small natural beauty!

All the best!

This is a picture of the stone face up. There is another Pricescope thread about the spinel because I was trying to decide with which size pear shaped diamond accent stones I wanted to set it.

In the end I bought a set of pears, decided they were too large, and am thus using them to set a piece of tanzanite. Some day, when I save up enough for another, smaller, set of pears I will buy them and set the red spinel. If I don't do this before my daughter goes to college, I may be in an old age home by the time it gets done. (College is expensive!)

Thank you for taking the time to look at my stone and comment on it :-). And I *believe* it is a Mogok stone. It was from Pala Gems.

The other thread was called "Red Spinel with Pair of Pears" and was in the "Show Me The Ring" area. This link may or may not take you there. I don't seem able to make links the way some people do where you just click on a word and are transported to the place you were supposed to be transported to!

The specs of the spinel are nowhere to be found... or is this my bad day? It should be quite large taking those pears as reference ! I remember you were considering a solution to fit all theree stones on one finger. Any conclusions yet?

I love the spinel and thing the smaller set of pears in the other thread would be perrrfeecctttt. Is it going to be in WG or YG or Plat? Leon Mege would definitely create an amazing setting for that! Little curved prong hands...yummy.

Thanks, Mara. I think I made the right choice. I realize I may be boring everyone silly with endless discussion of how to mount my tanzanite and my spinel. It is important only to *me*, after all! For the record, though, here is the story to date:

1-I bought the red spinel. Brad showed me how the spinel would look flanked with pear shaped diamonds. The diamonds were part of his stock; they were never my stones.

2-I saved some more money and bought pear shaped accent stones (just over .50 carats each) from Jan and Brad. I thought they were going to look the way I wanted with the red spinel, but they didn't. Not for *MY* taste. I preferred the look of the smaller stones Brad had originally photographed with the spinel. But I owned the pears.

3-I bought a piece of tanzanite LARGER than the spinel, choosing its size for the EXPRESS purpose of the balance between it and the diamond accent stones I already owned but no longer wanted to use with the red spinel.

Next (4) I must buy smaller pears (the same size as the pears Brad used to frame my spinel for a photo, but perhaps better quality) to frame the spinel. In other words, I agree with you, Mara, that the smaller pears look better with the spinel. The larger ones look good with my tanzanite.

Now if I had the money for these projects it would be nice.

Deb, who has been profligate and is looking for work :-)

PS-Where can I find Leon Mege designs? My tanzanite is going to be set in a platinum head with an 18k yellow gold band. The spinel is very far in the future and I have no detailed plans for it yet beyond the accent stones.

I am not sure I ever posted them! I will see if I can find some paperwork on it!

This is all I can find at the moment:

"1.78 ct. oval red spinel in a medium dark, vivid red color in VVS clarity.

The stone has medium dark tone, a vivid saturation and red hue.

The stone is a type II gemstone.

In the VVS clarity grade for a type II gemstone it has minor inclusions: somewhat easy to see under 10X and usually invisible to the unaided eye."

Oh, AGBF, something is telling me that you would not rest without the respective spinel and pears nicely placed in the clasic, simplest setting (this would probably come close to what Tiffany does the one diamond and two pears) and I would not imagine those in anything but a bezel setting

Couldn't you have returned the pear set from Brad and just gotten a smaller one? If you didn't like the way it looked when they arrived?

I was thinking of something like this when I saw the spinel and the small pears.

Beautiful.

I don't recall what I was feeling at the time, Mara. I know I didn't *ask* if I could return them! Perhaps I thought I would come to like the look. I know I liked the quality of the stones! I honestly don't recall what my thinking was. I *DO* know Jan and Brad have a trade-up policy, though.

He he... love those little harts to tears

Just remembered that a serious bulk of yellow gold is not going to make fans here. Oh well, but really, not too many pears would get as close to match the centre and keep the dimensions of the ring in balance as too little harts would.

yes i like the hearts too.
2.gif
how about the hearts instead of a set of pears AGBF?

Post some pictures of colored stones flanked by hearts. Convince me :-).

Deb

Wait, AGBF, that stone *still* hasn't been set?

Oh, no hearts please. Pears are preferable. Or what about a nice, small pair of RBs?

I started to write, "you may convince me, too, Hest. You may round up pictures of colored stones set by round brilliants." Then I decided maybe it should be a contest. If I make it a contest I have to tell you what I really want-the exact parameters-and award a prize, right?

OK, here goes. I will tell you what I like first.

I like classic jewelry, conservative jewelry. The Leon Megé piece has too much prong. (That is very fashionable and modern, but not my taste.) The bezel is also too much. I like to see the stones, not metal. If you have seen my solitaire you know that, for me, less is more. (I will try to post a picture of my solitaire in this thread to give you a point of reference.)

I want to set the red spinel with diamond sidestones approximately the size of the smaller pair of pears in the pictures. Or with stones that give that same proportion. (Round brilliants might have to be smaller than pears to give a balanced look.)

I don't like three-stone rings with stones of similar size. I like the outer two to be significantly smaller and really just to accent delicately, not to compete.

The prize will go to the person who comes up with the design I like most, be it a drawing or a photograph of something someone has seen.

The prize will *BE* the stone that is in a packet labelled, "Rhodolite 8.65 x 6.75 2.2 ct".

All I can promise is to award the stone in the bag, not that it actually *IS* a rhodolite garnet with those dimensions. (It looks as if it may be that to me, but I cannot swear to it. I am not a gemologist!)

The stone is pretty and can be set, but it is not of enormous value. I do not recall what I paid for it. Eventually I will post a picture, but if you "compete", you are doing so for fun. The prize may not be worth your time. (I was cut out to be a sales woman, right? I do everything I can to discourage a sale!! Maybe that's why I am a social worker, not a business woman!)

Thanks for any ideas :-).

Deb

strmrdr,

Thank you. I am going to give you some feedback.

All three of those rings have too much prong for me. The middle one was interesting, though, because the way that the shank was "pinched in" as it approached the stone made it look more delicate than the others. The other bands had too much metal. The first one was modern, but full of metal. The third one was old-fashioned, but full of metal.

The middle picture also had a band with small accent stones set in it. That design was too heavy, too metallic, for me. I prefer the "pinched in" one, but there are no sidestones in that ring.

Wow! I can't keep up with you! There are now two MORE links for me to check!!!

I'm too lazy to go find stuff for you..sorry AGBF

But the Leon Mege I posted is a sapphire flanked by what appear to be 2 hearts. Very cute. Love the delicateness of the LM settings. Imagining the spinel in there flanked with pretty much anything is yummy.

wide prongs in rings must be the rage right now I havent found one yet with thin prongs.

They are! Especially the double prongs!!! I am delighted you have been finding pictures. I love looking!

This is the stone I am offering as a prize for finding me my dream setting :-). Remember: it may or may not actually *be* rhodolite!!!
