That was the bottom line: sale $$ didn't cover rough+labor+profit.
If you take a rough that is sold to be cut at 1.5ct and cut it at 1.4ct you can not get a large enough premium to cover it. Why was it difficult for this cutter to maintain AGS0 SEs and cut them over 1ct? Couldn’t they have started with a large rough? Or maybe this is due to something I didn’t glean from previous replies – rough is generally only available in sizes that will produce diamonds at the major price milestones when cut improperly (improper meaning that they won’t necessary reach AGS0).
