Hi, I''m trying to place value to some antiques/china that I own for insurance purposes. Does anyone know any good sites that sell antique furniture so I can browse through and try to get an idea of what something similar to mine might cost?

Also, I have some china from my grandmother. I know the brand but it doesn''t say the pattern type on the back. Anyone know a place that has pictures of various types of china so I can try and get the pattern name?

Thanks for your help!

Hi!

Rubylane.com has antique furniture and lots of china.
Also, although a little high-end, 1stdibs.com has lots of antique furniture.

Thanks Ellen! I went to Replacements which is where I discovered that there are sooooo many different patterns of this brand. I guess I could just start clicking on each one to see if it''s the same pattern but I haven''t brought myself to start that process. I actually really like the Replacements site and was able to find the silver I was looking for there. Who knew that there are a million different types of spoons, forks and knives though in the same pattern.. it''s not as easy to place a value on items as I thought it would be!

Misysu, thanks! I will check out those sites.

Just thinking about this some more, let''s say I can''t find any pieces similar to those I have. What do you think is the best way to determine a value or what the replacement value would be? Do I just find a piece I like, even if not similar in style and quote that price or do I have to find something somewhat similar to what I have? This is tough b/c I have a number of pieces that came from my grandparents and I am having a hard time finding anything similar to them online.

Thanks!

If you don''t have a lot of things, and it''s proving hard to find them you might ask if you can send a pic with identifying marks and maybe they could tell you what it was. I bet they know a lot off the top of their head. Couldn''t hurt to ask!

And you''re welcome!

I''d have an independant appraiser look at it. Just make sure you get one that specializes in whatever it is. Of course that costs. I''m in the same boat, I''ve inherited a lot of things, worth money I know, but don''t know how much. I want to get rid of some, I can''t keep everything, but don''t know what to sell them for. So I''m going to have to go the appraiser route.

Dixie, you may want to call CharCrews in Hinsdale, maybe they can help you out as well. Google them for the number, good luck!

never mind...won''t let me attach. It was a forward about ChicagoBarbies....very silly but cute email describing Barbies from different neighborhoods and ''burbs. Sorry I couldn''t follow through!

Ok, I''m beginning to think that I''m describing one of my pieces incorrectly b/c I''m finding nothing even remotely similar online. I described it as a desk but it''s really a set of drawers, about as high as a typical desk. It gets wider as it gets closer to the floor, each drawer getting wider and taller (sorry, my descriptive skills are lacking!). The first "drawer" really isn''t a drawer b/c you don''t pull it out. You pull the face of the drawer and it comes down making a little writing area, which I''ve been told was typical for people to sit and do their bills on the surface or write letters, etc... On the very top is also a flat area where I''ve put small vases of flowers or such things. It sits on four, small legs and is wood.
Anyone know what this is really called?

Misysu, 1stdibs.com is great! I''ve found quite a few similar pieces. Part of my problem is that I have no idea what style my pieces are or when they were made so it''s challenging to compare.

Ellen, I think you''re right. I should get an appraiser.. I''m just too cheap! I may try to send in some pics though if I find someone willing to look at them. Thanks for your suggestions.

Monarch, thanks for the referral. I''ll look them up. Actually researching this stuff is kind of fun, just time-consuming!

You can always get your antiques appraised, that''s what we did when I inherited some pieces from my grandmother. We had a friend do it who worked for Sothebys so am thinking she didn''t charge us much. I forget it was a long time ago.

That does sound funny. Can you just cut/paste on here?

Ya know, since I am doing all this research, I might as well look into the cost of an appraiser. Perhaps it''s worth it and then I can figure out what the stuff I have is actually called.

Thanks Kaleigh, I may just do that.

It''s an Adobe attachment with pics...it won''t let me copy/paste...boo! I''ll see what I can do though, there has to be a way, LOL!

Dixie, that piece of furniture sounds like it might be a secretary.

Clio, thanks for the information about the Secretary Desk.

Monarch.. too bad this is a public forum, I could just give you my email.. oh well

I am beginning to think that an appraiser is the way to go b/c there is so much variety online and I really don''t even know the general details about the pieces I have. I''d like to know their origin as well as value now that I''ve done some searching.

Thanks for the help everyone!
