Any plans due to the current situation in the USA?

Is anyone else just tired of the darkness that's fallen on our country and wanting out?

My husband and I probably would have gone after the 2016 election, if we didn't have grown kids here. We really don't want to leave our kids.

So we did a few in-between things over the past few years, instead of totally staying or totally going. We sold our house (for several reasons) and have been renting for a few years now, waiting to see how things would go. We were waiting to see how this election went to buy another house here but it didn't go the way we were hoping it would so now we're not sure what we want to do about that.

We now have a small place in one other country, permanent residency in another, some money moved out of the US and a couple of other things.

I'm wondering if our best bet now might be to just kinda live in two three places, getting more used to another country/countries without leaving here completely. Then if things get really bad, just stay elsewhere and grown kids will be invited too.

A lot of this is just mental for me, too. I really like to sort of feel a little bit like I'm only a part-timer here, so whatever goes on can't affect me that much. I would like to feel and be even more that way now.

Or maybe we should just buy the house here anyway. I'm tired of renting. I want my own house again.

I don't know. I feel calmer now that we've put the above plans into place over the past few years but not sure what to do now. Also, we haven't been able to come up with alternate plans that we're that crazy about. It's complicated.

Anyone else in the same boat? Or what steps are you taking due to the changes in our country in recent years, if any?

I'm ashamed to say that my Plan B is in the infant stage because I deluded myself into thinking that this country would not make the same mistake twice.

Looking at Portugal at the moment. It's easy to establish residency, low cost of living, great healthcare system, 6th safest country in the world and I think but can't remember for sure, it may be ranked as the safest in Europe. Things change quickly though so what seems attractive today not be in the next few years.

It's a case of choosing between the devil we know and the one we don't.

I have an Irish passport I need to renew (I am part Irish) but I have a disabled brother and I am his legal guardian; and that would be complicated. Right now I am just reeling from shock.

My daughter ( only child) and SIL have discussed moving to Canada if he won. Now that it’s actually happened, I have to call her and make sure that she isn’t curled up in the fetal position in a corner of her house.
Also, we can’t move to Canada, it’s too $$ and we are to old for that kind of life changing move!

@seaurchin can I ask-are you in blue or red state?

Are there any strong blue states that you would consider moving to?

I ask because I grew up in a deep red state. I live in New England now. And while I am 100% scared for our country, I do feel a bit better being in a blue cocoon.

That’s a good idea. Thanks.

I agree. Grew up in a red state as well and now am in New England. I just got off the phone with my daughter and we both said that we are so happy to be living in a blue state. Doesn't make federal issues out of the state control any safer, but at least for state issues, I feel safe.

I'm not American but was living there for quite a while. I still love the country and my people there and I'm devastated. But please stay. America needs you, needs reasonable voices. It will be four years (hopefully not any longer) and things can and will change again.

I think this is one very good possibility. Move to a state that aligns with what you want from your fellow citizens and government structures.

For example, during COVID many people from California moved to Texas, Florida and the Southwestern and Mountain States when they experienced California turning far against their wishes as citizens. Now those states are more mixed and at minimum you can find pockets of liberalism.

I’ve lived all over the country and some states feel righter to me than others. Some states are very monolithic. Some are more balanced. If you haven’t explored this reality, you might find it worth trying to identify where you fit in.

I'm skeptical living in a blue state will ease the burdens that come if, just for starters,:
1. Social security benefits are cut and/or taxes on benefits are eliminated which will only hasten its predicted death by 2035;
2. ACA goes away and we return to what we had before. Good luck to people with pre-existing conditions;
3. The Department of Education is cut and states have to absorb all costs;
4. The rumored new health czar succeeds in half the loony ideas he's espoused
5. Blue state governors are threatened with loss of federal assistance if they don't kiss the ring.

It's going to be a bumpy ride.

Side Note:

If you move and you are of medicare age, please investigate buying a medicare supplemental ppo plan.

When my parents’ moved to New England to be closer to me, I had them buy a supplement through Blue Cross. The plan really saved my dad when he needed specialized radiation.

Or a medicare advantage PPO depending on which works for you best.

Folks I have removed multiple threads today because they violated our ban on politics. This thread is creeping toward that line, please keep it on topic so it can remain.

This may be what my parents have (It’s years since I shopped it for them).

This is fantastic advice. I’ve heard standard Medicare plus Supplemental is the gold standard. (Plus prescription plan of course). I experienced the reverse with my mother who ended up with suboptimal care because of not having that supplemental insurance.

I apologize for my part in that, Ella. Sorry.

Not an expat, however, my plan to visit Washington DC in 2027 to attend an international convention and to be a tourist has been cancelled.

Nope, no plans to leave. I may not like the decision made, but I also know that better future decisions will be made. I’m in a red state that turned blue in 2008, and it will happen again. I understand the work that is needed on my part and will be getting more involved instead of getting upset about it and taking my ball someplace else. That’s not the example I want to set for my 12 year old daughter; we do not give up in times like these. We will stay and continue to advocate for women’s health and everyone’s freedom.

I found the 107 day campaign inspiring and hopeful. I refuse to give up, to be angry, or to become even less inclusive of those with whom I disagree. The concession speech was just as inspiring; I am an introvert but it is true that we have to open our ears and our hearts and get out of our comfort zones and into our communities to try to understand each other better.

I really hope the younger generations collectively decide to figure out ways to unify. This polarized version of our country has to change. That will take more than a kumbaya session, I am aware. But we are better than this. We made tons of progress in just the past 100 years, and we can’t stop now.

I totally understand that there are those who have fought consistently and are just tired, and have the ability and privilege to seek peace elsewhere, and that’s fine. As for me and mine, we will survive this and we will keep on rolling forward, whatever it takes.

I won't be leaving CA. I want to build a wall and keep our money here. Capitalists are very selfish humans.

HI:

Be thankful you don't live in Canada.

cheers--Sharon

Maybe that depends on where one lives but I have seen great generosity from American capitalists and from our nation. Many do much below the radar but I know America is a land of many, many good people. I hope to continue to do my part and I hope others do also for those truly in need.

I’m staying where I am because I’m too old to start over anywhere else.
