Hi everyone, was hoping to get your informed opinions on whether this is a good purchase.

My partner tried on some rings at some big name stores to get a sense of shapes and settings and has her heart set on a five-prong design from Birks:

It seems like a fairly straightforward setting - we'd be looking for platinum.

I got in touch with some local jewelers and one of the quotes I'm thinking over is for a 1.54 ct, E grade, xxx, SI1, completely eye-clean/no fluorescence diamond with GIA certification.

I was quoted just under 20k for the platinum setting and the rock. (Setting: 980; Diamond: 19000)

Does that seem like a decent price or should I keep shopping around? This is also in CAD (Canadian dollars)

Thank you in advance!

would probably need to see the GIA cert to make an opinion since GIA XXX is a very wide range!

I personally think this is high, given the clarity is SI1. I did a quick search through WhiteFlash’s ACA’s, which are some of the highest quality, super-ideal diamonds on the market. A simple platinum setting + the stone in the size you’re looking for should come in under 20k. I would not want to pay 20k for a non super-ideal diamond, when you could pay 18k for a super ideal with a great upgrade policy. GIA xxx has a wide range, and while it might be a super pretty diamond you could get the best of the best for less.

***edit to add my post is in US dollars, sorry! I am not sure how this translates to CAD, sorry if my comment is irrelevant after currency conversion

Just as a FYI for PSers in the States: according to an online currency converter, $980 CAD = $783 USD; $19,000 CAD = $15,188 (both USD numbers rounded to closest dollar).

@uxmakeover

Here are 4 diamonds in the PriceScope Diamonds Search database that are 1.54 cts, E color, SI1 clarity & have "triple X" GIA lab reports; prices shown are in USD"

You need to post a copy of the GIA report so we can check the cut of the stone. Not all GIA XXX are well cut. It covers a broad
area including some not so well cut combinations.

Agreed.

@uxmakeover the measurements and proportions look great.
If your jeweler can get advanced images (such as IdealScope and/or ASET), please post them.

Could very well just be the angle and light play in the picture, but also make sure there is zero clouding or haziness:

Thank you very much for all the input, all!

Can’t wait to see what you decide! It will be stunning for sure, please post an update :)

If it's worth anything, as a fellow Canadian, I think that's a "good price" on the platinum setting, might be cutting you a break given the more expensive purchase of the diamond, but quotes I was getting for WG vs. platinum for simple settings were a bit higher than that when I was shopping around a few months ago.

Just an idea, and I know it can be very uncanadian, but I've read on other threads that sometimes the jeweller will cover the cost of the setting, might be something you could negotiate if you follow through with this diamond given the simplicity of the design and the cost of the diamond.
