Aqua Marine question

Hello lovely people,

I was wondering if anybody could tell me if it’s normal to see other colours reflected in an aquamarine? Is this something that depends on the type of light?

I got given this Aquamarine east west necklace for my 21st but have never been able to wear it as it’s silver and turns black on me within a day.
Well... I was *told* it was an aqua marine. It’s very light blue and super clean (as I assume most aquas of gem quality are).
I just gave it a clean and it measured up 9mx7mx5 on my non digital callipers which roughly calculates to 1.83cts if I’m not mistaken.
I noticed it will reflect different colours in different light - is this typical for an Aquamarine or does this mean it could be something else? Deciding to have it made into a ring or give it to my daughter. But thought I would t try and learn all I can about it first.
I can take loupe pics but just tried to take pics that caught the lights in the stone - and next to my diamond so you can see the blue hue. It’s much more obvious to the eye then it is to the camera lense.
**can take some pics outside if it helps.

Is the stone reflecting colors in the area around it or are those flashes of color coming from the stone itself?

I don't know if it's aquamarine or not but I'd guess that either way, it's probably not a real expensive stone if it came set in sterling silver. (More expensive stones are typically set in more expensive metals).

So if you have it re-set or give it to your daughter, I'd do it because you really like the stone regardless, or because it has sentimental value to you. Good luck with it. It is a pretty necklace.

Oh so it’s just reflecting the different light sources it will always look different night/day. It’s set in silver because my aunt had it made to go with a solid silver bangle she was giving me as a gift (not knowing I can’t wear silver).
My family used to buy stones all the time to have jewellery made (I was too young to be privy to the process other then I knew the gem dealer came and visited my grandmother pretty regularly).
I don’t think it’s an expensive stone (it was made as a gift for a young (Not very responsible) person so I would say at the time the whole thing cost at most a couple of hundred dollars) but it IS really pretty and is spending its life never worn atm.
I guess no-one can tell you if the stone is worth resetting - you need to decide that for yourself.... even if it’s just a piece of glass.

Worth noting the Sapphire that is in my profile picture is an 8ct beauty that was also set in silver which made me think it was worthless until just recently - so I learnt not to dismiss things based purely on this. Although the sapphire is around 80yrs old and this Aqua is only around 20 - so it’s not old or valuable. But hopefully good enough quality to make it worth resetting. If not I will pass on as is.

I agree. A stone being set in sterling silver is one clue that a stone may not be especially valuable but it's not proof of it.

Also agree that dollar value is not all that matters. I have a created sapphire or CZ (don't know which) that I plan to have re-set in a gold setting just because I love the look of it.

i don't know about these things but would rodium platting stop it going black ?
i feel sorry for people who can't wear silver and their silver treasures as silver likes to be worn

your aquamarine is very pretty
i would hope your daughter would love it
