I hve come across several nice kyanites on the ebay. They are inexpensive, for my pocket, but I have no idea about their going price. They look nice. I would like to know if they are easily imitated or too cheap to bother? In other words, if I buy one off ebay, how high is the risk of buying a fake? It is ridiculous to pay for identification if the price of an appraisal is more than the price of the stone but I do not like the idea of setting a fake stone.

They're cheap and mostly very dark IRL. They also have a hardness of 4 along one axis, so it's not really a good ring stone. I don't think kyanite is simulated since it is relatively cheap and not the most attractive blue stone. If anything, I could see dealers trying to pass these off as sapphires for more $$.

Thanks, TL! I''ll pass on them.

I used some facet rough for a necklace/bracelet/earring set that I posted on here. They turned out amazing. Not sure if they are a good idea for a ring... Maybe earings/pendant?

Most kyanite is color zoned, so looking for the distinctive color zoning may help you determine if it''s natural. Personally, I adore the color!

Like most all stones Kyanite comes in a range from fish-tank gravel to gem. It is a common mineral but quite rare in gem quality. When gem level it can be very beautiful and costly. It has been said even on pricescope that fine kyanite is what sapphire aspires to be. As Edward mentioned, Wildfish does have some wonderful rich, dense, uncommonly clean kyanites from Nepal. If that kind of quality is available on ebay I would be suspicious at the least of dyeing. I just purchased 2 kyanites from the gem trader that I am expecting may be in today's mail. here is a photo of the 2 together. I am thinking to make them into a well protected pendant. The orange one is from the same place where they find the lolipop spessartites!

Kyanites can be a very pretty blue and is generally inexpensive, but they are too soft for most jewellery applications. A cabbed kyanite might be hardy enough to be set in a ring.

I got my kyanite from litnon. relatively inexpensive and a very pretty stone (I have a picture of it somewhere)

I recieved 2 kyanites from ebay that were bought as ''tanzanites''. Got them, and NOPE...RI''d as kyanites. GOt my money back and was told to keep the kyanites.

They are a VERY pretty blue and completely clean (eye and loupe). Kyanites are pretty cheap stones. a 1 ct is 10$ or under.

I would say if you buy a kyanite, you will prolly get one....and if you buy a sapphire, or tanzanite you may stil recieve a kyanite :-D. I think you are safe!

RockHugger, I''m looking for a nice, somewhat large, clean kyanite (some color zoning okay). If you see one for $10.00 a carat let me know! That''s way cheap for good kyanite.

There are several good dealers that carry kyanite: The Gem Trader, Wildfish, ArtCutGems, ACS. I would rather get something from their inventory than a random ebay seller.

VapidLapid, those stones are really pretty!
is the orange one kyanite too?
gem trader now has a interesting greenish-blue kyanite on ebay now

I didn't realize that kyanite was so soft. Is it okay to use as a pendant or earrings? And is $10/ct a normal price, or is something higher more expected for a nice looking gem?

Zzz, sorry I am so late with this response, yes the orange one is kyanite too! It is from Tanzania. IRL it is even more amazing. Both stones are from gemtrader. Austennut, I would expect to pay more than that for well cut gem quality. my blue is 2.33 carats and was $100 per. The orange was similar.

I love the blue spectrum that makes up kyanite and I bought some for collecting purposes but have no intent to set it, just too soft. Sure is purdy though!!!
