I''m full of questions today.

We spoke to our DJ and he said he usually doesn''t start playing until 9pm. I''m a bit of a music fanatic so for me, not having music playing during dinner seems absurd! Not loud music, just background music to add a little bit of ambiance.

FI and FMIL think I''m crazy, and that people will be annoyed if music is playing during dinner. They say everyone will be talking so if it''s low enough not to bother people, it will be drowned out by the people talking anyway.

We are planning on having about 175 people at the wedding, so I''m sure there will be plenty of talking. But what if there is one quiet table that doesn''t have a lot to say? Is this a silly thing to be concerned about?

I have been to a wedding where the band played during dinner and it was EXTREMELY annoying. We won''t have music during the dinner party at WP1, and during dinner at WP2, we''ll have some very soft bossa nova type beats in the background. But I certainly don''t think that no music during dinner is a problem. In fact, it''s the safe way to go.

We're having music. Italian and big band music in the background, down low. I think its necessary. It keeps the wedding from sounding like a cafeteria! I totally agree with you!

Hmm, did he say why he doesn't usually play before 9pm?

We booked our DJ for a certain hour range. 4 hours comes with the package and you can add hours on for something like $150/each. He'll begin playing music during the cocktail hour, through dinner, all the way to the end of the night (ends up being 7pm-11:30pm). We're planning on soft modern jazz/pop like Jamie Cullum and Michael Bublé during dinner.

I don't think it would necessarily be missed, but for me, soft background music really adds to the ambiance. How many restaurants have you been to lately that don't have any kind of music playing?

well, he didnt say why he doesn''t usually play till 9pm, but I did have FI ask him about playing during dinner. he said that since his equipment will be set up on the dance floor he wouldn''t be able to get a level that would be good for the people in the front because then the people in the back wouldnt be able to hear. and if he made it loud enough for the people in the back, the people in the front wouldn''t be able to hear each other talk.

i think there might be a sound system in the hall itself, so i might see if i can just hook my ipod up to it and hopefully that would be a more even sound around the whole place. not sure why the dj can''t just hook his equipment up to the hall''s sound system....

hahaha gypsy you are exactly right, my hall already has a cafeteria feel to it, i''d rather take away from that a little with the music!

We had a small (60+) wedding; and after paying rather large bucks for a wonderful classical guitarist who played before/during/after the ceremony, we chose to have CDs played on the Inn''s stereo system. We only provided the music, they were responsible for playing it. It worked out perfectly for that size wedding; we even had a small dance floor and couples did dance.

We had AC/DC playing during lunch.

I''m not - partly because we are eating in a separate room and I''ve so maxed the numbers I couldn''t get anything in there even if I wanted to.

Also, I used to do a lot of competition shooting (started when I was 9) in the days when they didn''t think ear defenders might be a good idea. As a result, I have problems hearing some frequencies and talking to people with any kind of background noise is totally impossible.

Well of course we''re asking. . . the band or just their CDs? (I already know, but I had to ask ''cause you said ''don''t''.)

Our band will play softly during dinner. I think it adds to the festive atmosphere, as long as it doesn''t require people to yell.

It just threw me for a loop when I heard it. I had requested some easy listening during the meal and then to hear THAT. I asked TGuy, why is there AC/DC playing? Then I just shrugged and continued to chew on my prime rib.

We are but we''re going to stress to our DJ that we want the music to be played very softly. We''d like jazz standards to be played, as that seems like appropriate dinner (well, lunch) music. I think my dad''s nervous about music being played during the meal because he asks me talk to the DJ about it ALL THE TIME. Apparently it''s a very big pet peeve of his.

Yes we''re going to have background music playing while we eat.

Ack. We may be listening to AC/DC too at some point. On purpose.
