I didn't pursue the sapphire from my last post because I had uneasy feelings about the vendor. Moving on, at your suggestions, I have contacted David Klass who has kindly agreed to make me the ring that I want. Now to find a sapphire - he said he could look and send me some options, as well as set a stone I find, but I thought I would try looking for one.

I have gone through the list of suggested gemstone vendors and honestly didn't find a lot but wanted to get your thoughts about this stone:

As always, your thoughts are much appreciated! Thank you!

Just bumping this for thoughts.....

I was going to reply earlier. I am not an expert but I think it is cut poorly.
It has a lot of dark areas. Instead of seeing all violet, I am seeing black also and I don’t think you want that in a stone you’ll be paying lots of money for.
I would ask for more pictures, to be sure, but I think you could probably do better.

Thank you!

I like the Joe Escobar sapphire based on these photos. They are both beautiful, but the David Klass stone is showing a little bit of the bow tie/half extinction effect in the middle that a lot of elongated shapes will have. It might not bother you though.
I’m not sure if this has been mentioned before, but have you tried reaching out to Jeff White about custom cutting a sapphire for you?

Thank you. I guess I'm scared of having something cut because how do you know what it will look like? The color could be off, right? I'm new to all this......but yes, I've thought about it, but not that much to be honest. I do like the Escobar stone but for the setting I want, I don't think the measurements are quite right and they don't have any others at this very moment - but can source one for me if I choose to pursue it. I like the Klass stone in the uniqueness of it being a color change gem but I'll just have to see it in person to make that determination. I appreciate your kind reply!

The David Klass sapphire is beautiful and the shape will look fantastic in the setting you are having made :).
Most elongated shaped will have a little bit of extinction, but that stone might not have very much, you will know when you see it in person. Sometimes the extinction can look like one half of the stones is dark and the other is bright, but other times it’s more subtle and not very noticeable. David is excellent to work with and I bet he picked a gorgeous sapphire for you to look at. Please let us know what you think once it arrives.

Yes, see it in person. Sometimes video and photos just don’t display the gem accurately, and it’s how your eyes see it in your environment that counts.
Hopefully it’s a keeper and that setting is stunning.
Don’t forget to post up the “required and expected” hand shots in due course.
I like the first one better, I just feel it’s more unique.

Even if you don't see any sapphires that "grab" you amongst Diamonds by Lauren's current listings
http://www.diamondsbylauren.com/index.php/categories/blue-gemstones
think it could be worth your while to contact David Friedlander (a/k/a PS Trade member Rockdiamond).
  • He seems to have some sapphire dealers routinely visit him when they are in NYC
  • You live close enough to NYC that you could make a day trip or weekend visit to see a stone or stones in person under various lighting conditions before making a purchase (understandably enough, Joe Escobar and DK aren't going to send you stones without payment)
  • His office is just a 1/2 block from AGL & feet away from the GIA lab in Manhattan, so even if an appealing stone doesn't yet have a lab report, it would be easy-peasy for him (or you, were you to be in NYC on a weekday) to walk the stone over to either of those labs (I'd pick AGL myself)
  • Lastly, DBL has a couple of different benches do work for him & there are "outside" possibilities for ring fabrication you could meet with while in Manhattan, such as Steven Kirsch and Brilliantly Engaged (SK and BE are around the corner from DBL, albeit in opposite directions). I would trust any of those benches with a sapphire -- and trust them to do fine work. And of course, you could send a sapphire purchased elsewhere to DK.
Just a FYI: Passover began Friday evening, so the NYC Diamond District is essentially shut down this week (even my Irish-American father-in-law didn't go into his DD office during Passover), so you may not be able to reach DBL until next week.

Thanks so much, Molly!

I don’t mind paying for a sapphire as long as it’s fully refundable. DK’s is and I will get one of his tomorrow. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll definitely consider your suggestions! I am in love with Escobar’s work too. That’s the first I heard of Friedlander so I’ll check that out too. I appreciate your time and help!

Looking forward to hearing what you think of the DK sapphire "up close and personal"! If you do decide to return it, does DK provide a label for insured return shipping or will you need to take care of that yourself? Asking 'cause it's always good to have such vendor information here on the CS forum : - )

He provides the label!

Both stones look great in these pics. If the DK stone does not turn out as envisioned, I would investigate Joe Escobar’s stone: it looks really Nice and saturated and I am dure David can make it work based on your inspiration pics. Not sure wether you can only buy a stone from Joe Escobar or whether they need to set it as well?
